Net neutrality is the principle that Internet service providers should enable access to all content and applications regardless of the source, and without favoring or blocking particular products or websites. Telecom companies do not like net neutrality as it prevents them from charging higher fees to prioritize some traffic over others or create fast lanes, which they argue they need to recoup investments and manage network traffic. However, supporters argue that eliminating net neutrality would harm consumers, entrepreneurs and free speech by letting ISPs censor content or create monopolies.
