Lane and Cox in
impressive display
UP AND coming
Plymouth cyclists
Evie Lane
(pictured) and
Gabriel Cox took
on the best in the
country – and
passed the test
with flying
colours.
Team Certini rider
Lane finished an
impressive third in
the female youth
race in round one of the Southern XC series,
held at Black Park, Iver, in Buckinghamshire.
And Certini team-mate Cox put in a creditable
performance to finish in the top 10 in the youth
male race.
Team spokesman Stewart Cox said the duo
were up against strong opposition.
That included national champions Daniel Tullett
and Emily Wadsworth.
Cox, however, said both Plymouth riders had
risen to the challenge.
Cox said the two riders showed the benefits of
strength training under city racing experts Jay
and Maddie Horton.
On a flatter course than she is used to, Lane
led the female youth race, but was overhauled
by Wadsworth.
Cox, who by his own admission had a poor
start in the youth male race, worked hard
eventually finishing seventh, with British
champion Tullett occupying the top podium
step. Stuart Cox said: “Surrounded by riders
who were regular top 10 finishers at the
National MTB Series last season, Cox’s
seventh place and Lane’s third have given the
Plymouth youngsters a real confidence boost
for round three of the Soggy Bottom series at
Newnham Park on Sunday.”
Meanwhile, Plymouth rider Carla Haines can
count herself unlucky not to have won the Elite
women’s race at Black Park.
Haines led for most of the race, but was
overtaken by the eventual winner, Cat Ross, in
the final lap.
PLYMOUTH Corinthian Cycling
Club put on a fine early season
display with impressive times at
the PCCC Sporting 13 Time Trial.
Plympton’s Tom Moran, 54, won
the Veteran 50 category with a
strong time of 31 minutes and 12
seconds - which was also
enough for him to place third
overall at the event.
Moran’s club-mate Miles Earl
recorded a time of 31:12 to
secure a fifth place finish.
Poor weather had over-
shadowed the build-up to the
event but the gloom lifted in time
for 45 participating riders to enjoy
their time trials.
Despite some localised flooding
the conditions proved perfect for
recording fast times on the track.
The 13 mile route, which boasts
some testing climbs around
Modbury and towards
Ugborough, features a fast
descent through Erme Valley
towards the finish at Ermington.
Veteran rider Conrad Moss of the
Mid Devon CC recorded the best
time of the day with an
impressive 29:09.
Cycle Sport South Hams’ young
rider Harry Savell was the only
other participant to finish ahead
of Moran with a time of 30:43.
Fifteen-year-old Lauren Dolan, of
Giant CC Halo Films, was the
fastest female rider at the trials
with a time of 36:01.

Warne has potential for
a big future in boxing
D E VO N P O R T A B C
boxer Beth Warne has
earned herself a place at
the National Junior
finals later this month
after winning the under
57kg Western Counties
junior boxing title.
The 15-year-old won an
exciting contest against
Trowbridge ABC’s more
experienced boxer Elizabeth
Bools by a unanimous points
decision at Barnstaple RFC.
War ne dominated the
contest from the start, landing
heavy straight punches
through the middle of Bools’
guard.
The Devonport boxer was a
menace to her opponent
throughout and held off a
resurgent Bools in the third
round.
The victory saw Warne earn
a place in the National
quarter-finals and she has
s i n c e b e e n aw a r d e d a
walkover for that round and
will box in the semi-finals of
the competition on March 21
in Sheffield.
Warne’s debut season got off
to a flying start last September
with an impressive display on
her bow and she has not
looked back since.
“She’s a real listener. She
listens really well to what the
coaches have told her and she
has taken on key points in a
short space of time,” Neil
Hosking of Devonport ABC
told Herald Sport.
“That has been reflected in
the way she has boxed this
year.
“She’s had some tough
c o n t e s t s a g a i n s t s o m e
experienced boxers and come
out on top.”
With the exposure that
comes from boxing at a
national level, Warne could
have a very bright future
ahead.
“There’s so much going into
girls boxing right now and
with the resources available to
her Beth has the potential to
progress really quickly,”
Hosking said.
“We’ll take it one step at a
time with her, of course, but
she has already managed to
make the last four of a national
competition.
“If she does well in her next
couple of fights she could do
very well over the next few
years.”
D e v o n p o r t A B C a r e
certainly enjoying an exciting
period as Warne’s club-mate
Brandon Stacey is just one win
away from following her to the
National Junior finals.
The 15-year-old has had a
standout 12 months and a
victory in the under 57kg
Western Counties final this
Friday in Swindon would see
him join War ne on the
national amateur stage.
“Brandon has shown that he
can offer a really good level of
boxing and like Beth he’s
b e a t e n p l e n t y o f m o r e
e x p e r i e n c e d f i g h t e r s , ”
Hosking said.
“He’s a good counter-
puncher and he’s got a great
brain for the sport.”
Hosking added: “The club is
thriving right now. We have
good junior numbers and
we’ve got boxers fighting all
over the country week in,
week out. It bodes well.”
