Ana was conceived through IVF to be a donor for her sister Kate, who has leukemia. As she grew up, Ana underwent numerous medical procedures to donate organs and tissues to help treat Kate's disease. When Ana is 11, she hires a lawyer to pursue medical emancipation from her mother, who wants Ana to donate her kidney to Kate.
