My Singing Journey
A friend from my childhood once told me "dream on, and sing louder". This friend pushed this
saying deep into my heart until it made it seem as if it kept my heart beating. I never really began to
understand what she meant when she repeated this saying to me until she explained it. She said to
me that to dream on is to not give up, and to sing louder is to not let anyone take my voice away
from me. Singing has always been a huge part in my life from singing in talent shows to singing in
the shower. My mother said that I never stopped singing. The journey of my singing began with my
first School of Rock program and is now being pursued on my churches worship team today. Before
I start to tell you about my singing journey, I feel as if I should explain why I started to sing in the
first place. It all began when I was four years old, my older sister Kassidy would always, and I mean
always, be listening to music in her room and singing. As we grew up she learned how to play the
guitar and how to write songs. She inspired me to sing and I couldn't thank her enough for it. When
my sister was 12 years old she started to get involved in this program named School of Rock. When
she would sing on that stage I constantly wished that I was her. I could not wait until I was in the 7th
grade so that I could be a part of it as well.
The day eventually came and I was terrified. School of Rock is a program in which you get placed
into bands by instructors, then you perform on stage a week

How To Write A Rhetorical Analysis Of A Snowstorm
This painting is about a lower–class family that is going through a snowstorm in the middle of the
winter to survive instead of just staying inside the warm house. This painting is called the
snowstorm and was painted by Francisco Goya to illustrate a lighter but still hard time in life. This
painting is about a family out in a snowstorm and illustrates a lot about the character of the family
with the hardships that they went through, along with the desperation and willpower to survive.
While the family is out in the middle of the snowstorm they have many hardships to deal with. The
family is all grouped together in the middle of the painting with their jackets wrapped around them
and their heads facing down to keep warm with snow in every direction of them as if they don't
want to travel. This shows that the family is cold and, yet they have to face the hardship of the
winter. The tree next to the family is severely swayed to the right the branch in front of the family
was broken off from the tree and laying on the ground showing how hard it was to face the cold and
wind of the storm. A dog is in front of the family at attention on all four feet with the dog's paw
prints trailing the dog showing that the family is moving in the direction away from the prints. There
is a dead pig draped across and the back of a mule and tied down to it, along with a man on the left
side has a gun in between his arms tucked into his body as if he is the one who hunts the food for
the family.

Analysis of Eugene O'Neill's Long Day’s Journey into Night...
In the early 20th century, America was moving up socially and economically because of the
advancing technology. The standard of living was vastly improving, and people lived a much better
condition; however, women were still trapped in the world of patriarchy during this time period.
Patriarchy is a social system that "privileges men by promoting traditional gender roles" which casts
men as "rational, strong, protective, and decisive" while woman as "emotional (irrational), weak,
nurturing, and submissive" (Tyson 85). Because of such system, women are indoctrinated into the
mentality that they are inferior to men. In the play, Long Day's Journey into Night, Eugene O'Neill
portrays Mary Tyrone, the female protagonist, was being oppressed ... Show more content on

The reason that women were subordinate to men was because society believes women are
physically weaker than men; so they are unsuitable for hard outdoor labor or heavy–duty work
(Clive, Tim and Robert). Because of such tradition, these women became dependent to their
husbands and did not have the same freedom that the men enjoyed. In the play, Mary is a beautiful
woman and lives the life like any other girls of her time; but she is emotionally attached to her sons
and her family when she marries into the Tyrone family. She is also getting old, so she keeps going
on her days worrying about her change of appearance. She suffers from a morphine addiction and
she is psychologically wounded because of her past. She tries many times to break free but she
could not stop as she spends time with her family. She has gone through many struggles but she
cannot move on with her life. She keeps looking back into the past; and she regrets marrying into
the family because of the dreams she had to sacrifice such as becoming a nun or a concert pianist. At
the beginning, Mary was not on morphine until the death of her second son, Eugene. She is
traumatized and she is afraid when she is pregnant with the third child. That is when morphine is
first subscribed to her as a painkiller. The morphine relieves her from the pains but it also makes
herself addict to it. Every time she runs away from a problem, she

Summary Of Written By Roger House Essay
FOREWORD BY ROGER HOUSE My wife woke up one Monday morning and was making her
way to the bathroom when she noticed a trail of blood. She was twelve weeks pregnant and now she
was hemorrhaging. We called the doctor and were told we had lost our baby and needed to get to the
hospital as soon as possible for surgery. All I could do was fall to the floor and cry. The next thing I
did was call as many friends and churches as possible to ask them to pray. We made our way to the
hospital, were put in an examination room and left there. No one checked on us. No one examined
my wife. Finally, after nine hours of waiting, a doctor peeked in the room to see why we were still
there. We told him our story and he put his fetal stethoscope on and started listening to my wife's
belly. He then told us news we were not expecting. He said, "Your baby is fine and her heartbeat is
strong," and then he ordered an ultrasound. Turns out we did not miscarry and today we have a 29–
year–old daughter who is "the apple of her daddy's eyes." But until that day I never understood how
devastating a miscarriage could be. I learned a valuable lesson that day, a lesson that has changed
me to this day. I truly will never be the same and will never look at life the same way. Problems
come and go and while they aren't usually planned, they can cause us to be genuinely changed. But
the storms in life can be a totally different story. Storms in life usually jump out and grab you and

Song Analysis Of 'Easy Way Out'
No gimmicks, no costumes, no makeup, no bs, just solid core rock music. Four guys, one band,
Divide The Empire. Honesty comes natural for these Midwestern boys, the band describes their
music "The music is at times dark, sometimes uplifting, but always honest." and this is what you
will hear when listening to their latest album 'Three Winters, Volume II'.
The album begins with the song "Easy Way Out", which starts very melodic, however as the song
continues the music and vocals pack more than a meaty, hearty punch. From guitar solos to angst
filled vocals, this song is an indicator of what is to come with the rest of the album, unfiltered, pure
rock n' roll. Lyrics infused with fuel to tell us stories about life itself, trudging through the trials and
tribulations we all have encountered. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Who has been to a carnival or festival? A joyous occasion to most. Happiness in the beginning,
however slightly monotonous and meticulous towards the end. In the song "Carnival Ride", the
guitars clearly paint the sweet and sour mood for the song. However, the vocals are the real
indicator of emotion in this song, which are filled with throaty, deep seated emotion when the lyrics
are belted out, "I can't go on this carnival ride anymore. I forgot who I was and what I'm standing
for." "Carnival Ride" is one of the most stand out songs on the album, the raw emotion cannot only
be heard, but felt through the song

Rembrandt's Christ In The Storm On The Sea Of Galilee
A painting captures a single moment. Most of the time, the audience does not see what happens
before and after the moment of the piece, but Rembrandt's Christ in the Storm on the Sea of Galilee
is his depiction of Mark 4:35:39, a story that most children learn in Sunday School. Mark 4:35–36
tells the moments before the storm: "On that day, when evening had come, He told them, 'Let's cross
over to the other side of the sea.' So they left the crowd and took Him along since He was already in
the boat. And other boats were with Him" (The Bible). Rembrandt fabricates the scene of verse 37
and 38: "A fierce windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking over the boat, so that the boat was
already being swamped. But He was in the stern, sleeping ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

For instance, he works with a variety of shades of black within the murky storm clouds. Raetta
Parker notes, "Black is a mysterious color associated with fear and the unknown" and "denotes
strength" (Parker). For this purpose, Rembrandt uses the storm to symbolize the hard times, or
"storms", in a person's life. In this case, the strength of the storm is overpowering the boat, making it
hard for the disciples to keep the boat from being destroyed and overtaken. By looking at the
picture, the storm has cause one of the riggings to break free from the boat and tore the sail, not
standing a chance against the strong winds the storm is throwing at them. Also, the dark colors of
the overcast prevent the disciples from being able to see the shores. There is no place for the
disciples to dock the boat until the storm passes by, stuck in the middle of the storm Comparing the
painting to life's challenges, people can often be broken emotionally or physically, whether it may
be a death of a loved one or having to face a terminal illness. They can feel as if, like the disciples,
all alone with nowhere to escape to safety. Whatever situation one may face, it can be overpowering
and seems as if there is no hope in

The Concept of Time in Eugene O'Neill's Long Day's Journey into Night
The pre–Socratic Greek philosopher Heraclitus said in his theory of the Universal Flux that
"everything flows and nothing abides; everything gives way and nothing stays fixed. You cannot
step twice into the same river, for other waters and yet others go ever flowing on... Time is a child
moving counters in a game." (Allen 103)
And so it is with the characters in Eugene O'Neill's Long Day's Journey into Night. Time is little
more than a game in which they move as checkers, if not pawns. In their repetitions and habits, the
family seems to be stepping towards the same river again and again; but each time, the step falls
into a different stream. In its seeming ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The fourth, who has nightmares, or at least night–frazzles, is Edmund's drug–addicted mother,
Mary. For her, all times is a time warp. She extrapolates from her present during her fits and, in
essence, almost dreams that she isn't in time at all.
Louis Sheaffer, says the loss of all sense of time by Mary is shown "as the mother, fathoms deep in
morphine, trails the now–bedraggled (wedding) gown on the floor while she rambles on vaguely
about seeking something she had lost." (Goldberg 3) But the loss of soul–in–time is even more
acutely shown in two other passages.
A foghorn continually bothers the characters all during the play, ostensibly drawing them back into
the present. At one point, Mary confides to the servant–girl after a foghorn blast, "It wasn't the fog I
minded Cathleen. It hides you from the world and the world from you... No one can find you or
touch you any more...It's the foghorn I hate. It won't let you alone. It keeps reminding you, and
warning you, and calling you back (O'Neill 98)." Later, in railing about quack doctors, she cries,
"They'll do anything...to keep you coming to them. They'll sell their souls! What's worse, they'll

Ever since, I wondered whether this impression was correct. The goal of this thesis is to satisfy this
curiosity and to determine, through textual and visual analyses, if the 1986 television series also
carries a Confucian message, or whether it was solely produced for entertainment purposes. This
leads to the following research question:
How does the 1986 television series Journey to the West convey the novel's original Confucian
message, and what does this suggest for its production purposes?
I argue that authors and producers often attempt to impose their own set of cultural and political
ideologies on its audience through a certain depiction of right and wrong. In this manner, works of
fiction might influence, perhaps even alter, the ideologies of the audience.[3] Accordingly, analyzing
the depiction of ideologies in media content can serve as a basis for further research on if and how
producers intend to influence their audience.
This particular case of Confucianism in the 1986 Journey to the West television series is especially
interesting, due to China's socio–political setting of that time. The influence of the Chinese
Communist Party (CCP) on media content[4] combined with its usage of Confucianism to secure its
own right to rule[5] make the Journey to the West television series the perfect medium to promote
Confucianism to the masses. The enormous popularity of Journey to the West

What Is The Story Of The Storm Short Story
Peter stood surrounded by cold darkness and stale, dusty air he was full of happiness and joy unlike
most people in the Storm,
where you are forced to do everything that you are told to do including no happy thoughts or fun.
You were told to do a certain job, you were told if you were allowed children and how many you
were allowed,
it was a gloomy place to be for Peter. He had 2 brothers and a mother who was a clerk at a local
store and he had a dad who worked in the mines which is what male people would have to work in
once there 18.
Peter was 16 and his brothers were 15 and 14 their names were James and Derrick, Derrick being
the youngest was forced to work for King Storm as an adherent where he would have to make sure
that the family was following rules and if not he was to report it and was rewarded for it but if was
hiding it would get painful death. This was generally how families would work in Storm.
Peter and James were very close together, they both had happiness in them but was hard to keep it
under control when Derrick was home. Every night Peter and James thought of ways to escape this
dark place they lived in and escape to happiness.
On the other side of Storm was Peace where you were free to explore and was a beautiful place
where there where skyscrapers and was light and you got to choose your path of life.
This was the real life they wanted to live in.
One night while Derrick was asleep Peter and James decided to think of a way to escape this
hardship and run off to a happy place for them.
After a couple hours of thinking they had it all planned they discovered that every night at 10:00 PM
The electricity would cut off so it could be restored this would usually take 2 minutes.
Once the electricity was down they would try to escape without getting caught by the guards once
there out they run for their lives, they thought hard "If we are trying to escape we need to bring
Mum and Dad with us" said James
"Hmmm not sure cause they will be mad if do and Derrick will find out" replied Peter "But...... if we
did escape without them then they would kill mum and dad" explained Peter.
"Maybe we could say to them that we want to go somewhere and when we have the opportunity we
can escape," said

Wu Cheng's The Journey To The West
Chapter one of Wu Cheng'en's classical story, The Journey to the West, introduces the main
character, Monkey, by providing background information about his origin and early life. Monkey
lived equally along with gibbons and baboons who he considered his kin until he was appointed to
king of the Blessed Land of Flower Fruit Mountain. This transition from an unstructured, free will
society to an orderly kingdom portrays the social changes humans experienced when dynasties arose
in civilization. After Monkey gained the title of king, certain changes occurred. Immediately after he
claimed the position, his peers "lined up according to rank and age", praising Monkey by chanting,
"long live our great king" (Cheng'en, 177). The recently equal group ... Show more content on

Prior to Monkey becoming king, a poem in the beginning of the chapter claims "they played two
games or three with pebbles and with pellets; they circled sandy pits, they built rare pagodas, they
chased dragonflies...." which are activities that allowed the population to live in a carefree, playful
environment (Cheng'en, 174). After Monkey became king, their activities depended on the season,
which another poem portrays; "In the spring they gathered flowers for food and drink. In the
summer they went in quest of fruits for sustenance. In the autumn they amassed taros and chestnuts
to ward off time. In the winter they searched for yellow–sperms to live out the year" (Cheng'en,
178). The newly civilized, ruled monkeys no longer roamed aimlessly playing with one another, but
had jobs that would ensure their survival. This societal change is also reflected in the late Ming
dynasties idea of radical individualism. In this time, the text argues that "personal freedom had been
celebrated at the expense of social responsibility" (World Literature, 169). The monkeys now had
responsibilities to attend to, likely with the king's instruction, when before they were liable for little

Long Day's Journey Into Night Essay
Long Day's Journey into Night
Long Day's Journey into Night, written by Eugene O'neill, is a play about a tragic, gloomy day in
the lives of the Tyrones'. With O'neill's use of elements such as diction, syntax, selection of details
and method of organization, he is able to create such an accurate play, depicting a situation similar
to his own, filled with gloominess and alcohol. As for the narrator of the play, there really isn't one,
but it is shown that Edmund Tyrone in the play reflects O'neill, as he once suffered from
consumption just like Edmund. Edmund is a forgiving character and doesn't blame as much as his
family members do. He is the peacekeeper of the family, which keeps the family from falling apart
like it is at the verge of doing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
More than once, Edmund is seen telling all the other characters to stop when they are arguing, like
saying "Cut it out, Papa" or "Mama, don't". Edmund can also resort to violence to keep the peace,
e.g. Edmund slaps Jamie, in defense of his mother, when he goes too far by saying "The Mad Scene.
Enter Ophelia" (Pg. 174) after his mother makes a scene while she isn't sane. This exemplifies
Edmund's need for peace and respect amidst everything that is going on around him, and also his
love for his family. Edmund is an intellectual and enjoys poetry and philosophy. Edmund cites many
poems and his philosophy accordingly to the topic of the conversation, which shows that Edmund
finds his great escape through poetry and philosophy, or rather art. It is his way to cope with and
escape the problems that his family face, unlike the rest of the characters. This is very much like
Tom Wingfield in The Glass Menagerie who also finds his escape through poetry.
In conclusion, the struggles that the Tyrones face are described descriptively, such as Edmund's
alcoholism, Mary's morphine addiction, James' stinginess or Jamie's failure in life, all of which were
through different elements. Symbolisms in the play also provide a means of escape for the character,
in a stuffy situation. Edmund, unlike his family, is blameless of the situation, which kind of makes
him a protagonist in the play. Fortunately, Edmund can use his talent of words and philosophy to
virtually send himself into a world full with rainbows and unicorns, leaving behind this dark of a

their exsistance. So caught up in tabloids and money people seem to forget the search for love, self

Journey To The West Character Analysis
In "The Journey to the West," the monk was accompanied by Pigsy, the Sha Monk, the Handsome
Monkey King, and the horse. Each of these supporting characters possess a certain magical ability
that assisted the monk on his journey, additionally they had their own flaws. This contrasts the
monk, which has no magical ability and was devoted buddhism. The strengths, weaknesses, and
backgrounds of these supporting characters encapsulate the idea of buddhism throughout the novel,
and by including them and Xuanzang the book is able to summarize the idea of buddhism. The main

Piscine's Journey In Life Of Pi, By Yann Martel
Desperate times call for desperate measures. Surviving a tragic situation is a true test of one's
strength. It requires both external and internal strength, with the latter being more important. Using
mental strength is what allows many people to conquer several obstacles throughout a difficult

Piscine Patel trying to survive a shipwreck using everything that he learns and experiences
throughout his childhood. He endures many hardships on this difficult journey of survival, such as:

Piscine's parents work at the family owned zoo, thus allowing him to have more knowledge about
animals than an average young child. He has always shown interest in seeing how the animals get
trained, fed and watching them go to sleep. He is able to use the knowledge from his experiences
with animals at the zoo to survive on the lifeboat inhabited with other animals. One of the important
lessons he learns as a child is when his father takes the family to the tiger's cage, and his father
shares that the tiger has not been fed for three whole days. The zookeeper releases a goat into the
tiger's cage and the goat is immediately killed by the famished tiger. This teaches Piscine and his
brother that not all animals are approachable, and reminds Piscine that animals can also be
dangerous, and provoking them can either lead to injury or death. Piscine remembers this lesson
when he first lands on the lifeboat, and Richard Parker and a hyena are on board. He remembers that
he must stay out of the hyena's way because his father once said, "They have the strongest jaws in

Essay on Anaylysis of Journey to the West
Does the idea of a 'journey' apply to Tripitaka's pilgrimage? If so, how? The idea of embarking on
journeys has stood the test of time – early man explored uncharted territories, while modern citizens
jump at the chance to have an overseas experience. Are we truly concerned with materialistic
experiences, or are we seeking to expand our horizons ? The term pilgrimage itself suggests a
journey to a geographical location of spiritual importance. However, journey in this case may not
solely be categorized as physical travel but also as the voyage of soul development. Tripitaka's
pilgrimage is more likely a spiritual journey to enlightenment than a mission to retrieve Buddhist
scriptures from the West. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During one of the trials, Wuneng asks Wukong: "All you need to do is carry Master on your
back...and jump across. Why continue to fight this monster?" (Vol 1, P.436) Hearing this, Wukong
answers that he cannot because "You and I are only his protective companions, guarding his body
and life, but we cannot exempt him from the woes, nor can we obtain scriptures all by ourselves."
(Vol 1, P.436) The series of events undergone by Tripitaka continues to suggest that the idea of
experiencing a journey outweighs objective fulfilment. In the final chapters of the book, when
Tripitaka arrives in India, the deities observe that he only has undergone eighty trials. Consequently,
after being given the scriptures, several deities magically carried him to an area where he would
have a confrontation with a giant turtle he encountered along his pilgrimage, thus orchestrating one
final trial before his enlightenment. The heavy babysitting of Tripitaka pilgrimage by higher powers
and the attainment of his enlightenment, not, notably, for fetching the scriptures back, but instead
for the eighty one tribulations he overcame seem to exemplify that the idea of spiritual journey is of
paramount importance. The

An Essay On A Journey By Bus
A Journey by Bus I Have Made Or, A Journey by Bus
Occasion and planning: I was waiting for an occasion to go on a journey by bus. It at last came in
the month of last October. A friend of mine lives in Khulna. He invited me to his sister's

traveling by bus. The day was fixed for the journey.
Beginning of journey: I reached the bus station by rickshaw. A Bus ready to leave for Khulna. It was

the station came up. The guard blew the whistle and the bus started moving with a jerk. It was my

returning to their nests by rows. The last rays of the setting sun fell on the green fields and produced
an unforeseen sight. It filled my heart with great joy and excitement. I could enjoy the majesty of
the setting sun and the pathos of darkness and patches of cloud floating in the sky were all very

her child on the same day as her daughter Jayde's birthday. Either way, they will have their birthdays

American Religion in Long Days Journey into Night Essay
American Religion in Long Days Journey into Night
The modernist sentiments throughout Long Days Journey into Night, by Eugene O'Neill, are
apparent in many different ways. Among the methods he used was the portrayal of America's
withdrawal from traditional religion and modes of behavior. He used his immigrant Irish family, the
Tyrones, as a pedestal for this idea by highlighting their departure from traditional Irish beliefs and
their struggle to form new, uniquely American, ones. O'Neill did this by repeatedly evoking a drastic
difference between his character's conduct and their Irish Catholic counterparts. He replaced the ...

The Tyrones also formed a new counterpart to the Catholic sacrament of confession, in which a
higher authority forgives people of their sins. The Tyrones felt this absence very much, because they
were constantly bickering and chasing blame around. It was as if they were waiting for the
permission to be forgiven from God through a priest. They were in a rut of their own creation, and

Journey into Night by Eugene O'Neill and Macbeth by...
Supposed someone asked you to write a story about death. Would you fill it with strange and
horrifying sounds and sights; gruesome acts and frightening ghosts like Macbeth? Or would you
write about a seemingly normal family from the outside, where the unknown hides from behind
common decisions and objects. First and foremost, Long Day Journey into night by Eugene O'neill
and Macbeth by Shakespeare share a common theme with each other. The characters in both of
these dramas lack communication with one another.
Let's examine Macbeth first. The playwright Macbeth begins with Macbeth, who is thane of Glamis
and Banquo being introduced to the Weird Sisters after a victorious battle. The Weird Sisters or
otherwise known as the Three Witches. The Three Witches convince Macbeth that he had a great
destiny awaiting him. " All hail, Macbeth! that shalt be king hereafter." (Shakespeare, Act 1, scene
3, line 53) Once Lady Macbeth hears of what the Witches have foretold her scheme starts brewing.
She has one goal in mind and will do everything in her power to influence Macbeth to carry out her
plans.Macbeth believes what these witches have "prophesied" so much that he is willing to get it at
any cost. Lady Macbeth feels that Macbeth isn't "man"enough to carry out the deed of killing
Duncan. " When you durst do it, then you were a man; And to be more than what you were, you
would be so much more the man."(Act I,scene VII, line 55–57) She uses Macbeth's weakness to
convince him that he

Enrique 's Journey By Sonia Nazario
Enrique's Journey
In the book Enrique's Journey written by Sonia Nazario, a projects reporter for the Los Angeles
Times, Nazario talks about the true story of a young Honduran boy named Enrique that was
abandoned at the age of 5 by his mother Lourdes. His mom left to the United States as an immigrant
to work so she can be able to give her poor children a better living. After 11 years of tears, sadness
and loneliness pass Enrique decides to go to North Carolina in search of his mother. Family is the
central theme of Enrique 's Journey. By basing her investigation around Enrique 's story, Nazario
explores the ways that immigration affects an individual's family. Lourdes insistently believes that
she is acting in the most responsible way as a parent by traveling to the U.S. for work. Though she
initially makes the trip for her children, they immediately feel the heartbreak of separation
beginning with Enrique who is asking where his mother is. Their whole notion of "family" becomes
completely broken and will be seen later when the cycle continues with the family Enrique has
created with Maria Isabella.
Characters in this book must make many difficult decisions in order to deal with their debilitating
poverty. While growing up in Honduras, Lourdes glimpsed images of the U.S. on television as most
young children in other countries do, and starting at a young age decided she wanted a piece of the
so–called "American Dream" for herself. She was enthralled by what she saw, like

Essay about Long Day's Journey into Night Eugene by O'Neill
In the play Long Day's Journey Into Night by Eugene O'Neill, the Tyrone family is
haunted not by what is present in flesh facing them, but by memories and constant reminders of
what has been the downfall of the family for years. " No it can never be now. But it was
once, before you–" (72) [James Tyrone referring to the Morphine addiction of his wife,
Mary, which attributed to the undoing of the family]. Their trials and tribulations are well
documented by O'Neill through the proficient utilization of theme, characterization, plot, setting,
and style.
Throughout the play, O'Neill's theme is one of a disclosure into the life of a seemingly
normal family on the outside yet convoluted with bitterness on ... Show more content on

"I hope, sometime, without meaning it, I will take an overdose. I never could do it
deliberately. The Blessed Virgin could never forgive me, then." (121) It is apparent in this
muttering by Mary to herself that her addiction has seized control over her and that she no longer
can bear the pain.
James Tyrone is faced with many a problem. Through this tough time he is faced with
personal, family, and financial conflicts, thus attributing to the plot. Besides having to deal with his
wife's addiction, his sons' ill health and drinking problems, and his financial decisions, (which have
proven to be for the worse), James struggles with a personal conflict throughout the play. He
believes that he may be the cause of some of the family problems and that he has dealt with them in
an improper manner. "So I'm to blame!..." (39)
The setting of the play is the Tyrones' Puritan New England home, which provides for
many of the arguments that take place in the novel. These arguments often arise due to the fact that
their house never really felt like a true home to them. "I never felt it was my home. It was
wrong from the start" (44) The town in which the

The Importance of Setting in Jack Londons "To Build a...
A good writer's depiction of setting positions the reader right into the story. In "To Build a Fire" by
Jack London, the setting plays a significant role throughout the entire short story. London uses
certain techniques to establish the atmosphere of the story. By introducing his readers to the setting,
prepares them for a tone that is depressed and frightening. Isolated by the hostile environment of the
Yukon in sub–freeing temperatures, a man falls victim to the unrelenting and unforgiving power of
nature, London shows us how the main character of the story is completely unaware of his
surroundings. The only world the man is truly accustomed to is his own. Never being exposed to
such a harsh climate draws one to conclude that the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

stands on a bank of the Yukon about to plunge into an almost absolute wilderness, he has little or no
understanding either of his immense isolation relative to his surroundings or of the extreme danger
posed by the cold snap. But all of this, London comments at the beginning of the third paragraph,
"The mysterious, far–reaching hair–line trail, the absence of sun from the sky, the tremendous cold,
and the strangeness and weirdness of it all, made no impression on the man." Thus, the man also
knows, in addition to the fact the sun will reappear, that it is fifty degrees below zero, but he does
not know the meaning of this fact, it portends death for anyone who makes himself vulnerable to its
ability to kill. "Fifty degrees below zero was to him just precisely fifty degrees below zero. That
there should be anything more to it than that was a thought that never entered his head." During his
journey, the man gets his feet wet as he falls through the ice into the water of a hot spring. Because
of the severity of the cold, the man's life depends upon his ability to adapt to his surroundings. After
one, half–successful fire–starting endeavor, and several other pitiful attempts, the hopelessness of

include the contrast of many opposing forces. Good and bad, bitterness and forgiveness, saving and
destruction, heaven and hell as just a few of the conflicting themes. Many secondary characters in
the novel are important in the life of Gustad, and encourage these themes. In The Road to Salvation:
Mythological and Theological Intertextuality in Rohinton Mistry's Such a Long Journey, Michel W.

A Long Day 's Journey Into Night And Birdman
Virtuous Ignorance? A Comparison of A Long Day 's Journey Into Night and Birdman In the art of
storytelling, the artist tends to rely on a specific pattern of story development. This pattern, as we
have seen in the numerous literary examples that we have read so far, naturally conforms to a rigid
framework–one that we, as humans, repeatedly desire. This framework was described by Dan
Harmon as "the story circle", and mirrors the cyclical nature of our conscious perceptive
capabilities, as well as our understanding of the universe surrounding us. The story circle identifies
(from the perspective of the character or characters we primarily identify with) a submersion and

In the play A Long Day's Journey Into Night, the crossing of the threshold takes place as the family
strives to be whole. The pursuit of harmony captivates and empowers each member of the Tyrone
family, and the hope of true happiness drives them. Whether through the use of forced optimism,
blissful ignorance, or denial, the words and actions of the family are intended to lift "the fog" of a
broken past and enter into a new era of trust, support, and overall positivity. Evidence of a broken,
almost irredeemable past is made readily available to the reader, and one gets the sense that despite
all reason to doubt the intentions of the other, each of the Tyrones has completely crossed into an
attempted realm of newfound hope. As their past continually rears its powerful and conspicuous
head, a philosophical battle between existentialism and nihilism continually fuels the crossing.
James bashes his eldest son for his growing doubt of the success of this new covenant, stating "By
God, how you can live with a mind that sees nothing but the worst motives behind everything is
beyond me!" (O'Neil 39). Likewise, Mary, in denial of the severity of her youngest boy's illness, and
Edmund, maintaining ignorance so as to maintain the illusion of the possibility of wholeness,
display their desperation in the following: "You mustn 't cough like that. It 's bad for your throat.

What Is Wuung A Hero InThe Journey To The Sun Wukong
In many cultures, heroes have been recorded in tales for thousands of years. In China, one of the
Great Classic Novels, The Journey to the West, was written by Wu Cheng'en in the 16th century
during the late Ming dynasty (1590–1644) when capitalism began to develop. The book describes a
Buddhist monk Tripitaka and his four disciples: Monkey, Pigsy, Sandy and White horse, and how
they battled with different demons on the way to the west in order to get Buddhist scriptures. In the
novel, Monkey had its own name called Sun Wukong. The first name Wukong had a Buddhist
meaning which is "Aware of Vacuity."
Wukong was a beloved hero in Chinese religion and culture which can be illustrated in The Journey
to the West. What does mean to be a hero? A hero can be considered as someone who is admired by
his/her great achievements. In mythology, a character is someone who has superhuman powers,
marvelous origins, brave enough to revolt against the inequality and fit in with the era of they live in
can be viewed as a hero. Wukong's actions and ideologies satisfy these requirements to be viewed as
a hero.
Wukong's marvelous birth contributed him to be a hero. At the beginning of The Journey to the
West, the monkey was born from a stone egg. According to Anthony Yu's translation of The Monkey
& the Monk: A Revised Abridgment of The Journey to the West, it described that there was an
immortal stone on the top of a mountain. With the nutrition of the seed of Heaven and Earth and the

A Sentimental Journey Through France And Italy
'The prevailing cast of this period is not melancholy nor tragedy but farce'. Discuss in relation to A
Sentimental Journey.
There exists the idea that the period occupied by sentiment was one of refined and intellectual
emotion. However, it seems that if this notion ever existed, it was quickly overcome with literature
occupying the theme of farce, either ironically or obliviously. A specific example we can point to to
clearly demonstrate this idea is A Sentimental Journey through France and Italy by Laurence Sterne.
While some contemporaries adored Sterne's work on a serious sentimental level, many other critics,
both past and present, see it instead as a conscious farcical parody of the idea and concept of
sentiment that was so revered and admired at the time. In A Sentimental Journey we see various
elements of farce through the different aspects presented to us as readers, ranging from the
characters within the story, with a focus on Mr. Yorick, our main character, and farce is even present
in the form of the book itself. And it is these factors we will examine that highlight the farcical
nature, not only of A Sentimental Journey, but most likely a great deal of sentimental literature
written of the time. The first thing to address before we dive too deeply into the exploration of
comedy and farce specifically in A Sentimental Journey, we must first dissect what is meant by the
term "farce" itself. The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Literary Terms describes it as 'a kind

Journey to Ixtlan: Getting the Message Across Essay
Now I do not know what Carlos Castaneda was smoking while he wrote Journey to Ixtlan: the
Lessons of Don Juan, but it sure did bring out his creative side. Throughout Journey to Ixtlan, the
reader is constantly perplexed and confused by the enigma that is don Juan. Don Juan is a teacher, if
you want to call him that, and he teaches Castaneda how to stop the world and how to erase personal
history. In reality I really do not think don Juan existed, he was merely a figment of Castaneda's
peyote–influenced imagination. When we watch television, or read through magazines, we often see
advertisements featuring stars, or celebrities that we respect. Companies use the celebrity's influence

Rather he may just be lying about being able to perceive things differently to get it over with, as a
sort of concession, and he may not truly understand it. Again I bring back the effects of peyote as a
possible hindrance to Castaneda's ability to fully grasp this concept. It is totally plausible that this
ten year apprenticeship was merely a waste of time, because at the end Castaneda gets in his car, and
drives away, admitting that he was not yet ready to take on the world the way don Juan and don
Genaro wanted him to. He realized that it was just not his time, and he was not yet able to find his
ally, which he had been working towards for years. Here he may not have been under the influence
of peyote as without the effects of the drug; he is not prepared to take on the full meaning of
"stopping the world." However, I feel that by walking away he is going to use what he learned.
Castaneda is going to return Los Angeles with a new view on life, and a new perception of things.
When he returns, nothing will be the same, and his mindset will remain forever altered, as don Juan
and don Genaro point out that it will never be the same; just as they will never reach Ixtlan,
Castaneda will never reach his `ideal' Los Angeles. Although we do not know if he really will apply
his new knowledge, it is almost like by not looking back at the end that don Juan is being sort of
arrogant, knowing that

At one point, Sun Wukong even single–handedly defeats the Army of Heaven's 10,000 celestial
warriors, proving that he is a warrior of the same caliber as Heaven's general, Erlang Shen.
Unfortunately, Sun Wukong's misconducts had to be punished, and the Buddha imprisons Sun
Wukong under his palm for more than 500 years. He is eventually set free by the Bodhisattva,
Guanyin to help Xuan Zang travel to the west safely and retrieve the Buddhist sutras.
Sun Wukong's popularity lies in his eccentric personality, his super powers, and his embodiment of
various religious influences. For example, Asian countries such as China, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, and
others have almost an unbreakable bond in the teachings of Confucius. The governmental system,
their education system, as well as these countries' societal culture all emphasize on the teachings of
filial piety. Conversely, Sun Wukong's early life is the perfect opposition of Confucius' teachings
when he wreaks havoc in the Heavenly Kingdom. Notably, his entire character's early life is the
embodiment of anarchism which supports the idea of Taoism as Sun Wukong personifies the
opposition force that is responsible for correcting the world's negativity. His wrong–doings in the
Heavenly Kingdom has obvious damage and repercussions. However, it is due to his wrong–doings,
the Jade Emperor realizes his army's weakness and has taken actions to repair those flaws.

Significance of Fog in Long Day's Journey into Night...
Long Days Journey: The Significance of Fog (8)
A Long Day's Journey Into Night, by Eugene O'Neill, is a deeply autobiographical play. His life was
rampant with confusion and addictions in his family. Each character in this play has a profound
resemblance, and draws parallels and connections with a member of his own family. The long
journey that the title of the play refers to is a journey into his past. Fog is a recurring metaphor in the
play; it is a physical presence even before it becomes a crucial symbol of the family's impenetrable
confusion. It is referred to in the text as well as stage directions in this play. It sets the mood for the
play in all its somber hues.

There's no fog in the harbor. I'm sure the spell of it we've had is over" (O'Neill 736). The
introductory image establishes the fog as both the intermediary and a symbol of Mary's addiction.
The fog is easily identifiable as Mary's morphine high, representative of her cloudy mental state.
Mary sinks back into her addiction as the night falls and slowly regresses further away from reality
and her family. The fog signifies the state of mind that she is in. Fog has a dense and opaque quality
that creates low visibility and blocks out the sun. The fog described in the stage directions is "...as a
white curtain drawn down outside the windows" (O'Neill 773).
Mary tells Cathleen how she loves the fog, which can be interpreted as her love for the morphine
that removes her from any type of coherence. Mary was on a path to recovery and now has slowly
lapsed into her state of addiction once again. She likes this state because " It hides you from the
world and the world from you. No one can find or touch you any more" (O'Neill 773). For Mary,
this fog is representative as an alternative or refuge from reality. Her relapse into addition causes
clouds her judgment and impairs her sight. She can hide herself in the fog so that her family can be
oblivious to her addiction.

David is slowly getting more exhausted although he does get sleep he always has to be ready for
anything so he doesn't sleep well which means he can't put in his all. Also every day his medical
conditions are getting worse and he will probably need medical care when he gets back. Although
he still keeps going because he has to take care of his head and shoulder while also avoiding getting
injured again from mussels being pulled so he can still do his daily task, be able to still operate the
boat and do any necessary repairs needed without enduring pain to himself.
In conclusion throughout all the struggles he had dealing with the frog when he did get found he
wouldn't leave it so the people that found him gave him all the supplies he would need and he then
started the journey back to his home without a worry because him and the frog were no longer two
things they were one and acted as one.David no longer looked at this journey as a bad thing but a
good time and a bonding experience with the frog and the sea the ocean a beautiful thing but it is
also one of the most dangerous things. So in conclusion I really liked this book.
The theme of the book is although times can be difficult you have to continue and push forward and
patience will have good results.
The mood of the book is exciting it kept me wanting to read more.
The tone of the book is serious because when I read it it seemed so real and like I was there with

Descriptive Essay On The Desert
The hot, arid air burned into my soul as I faced the barren desert surrounding me. My family and I
were on a long–awaited vacation to the Grand Canyon, yet we had to drive over 15 hours – I
radiated impatience throughout the journey. Walls of heat shrouded me as I gasped for air – my
efforts were fruitless, however, swallowing nothing but fire. As the fire in my lungs grew, I looked
out the window and into the looming suns heart. Suddenly, my eyes collapsed and tears engulfed
them till they took their true form; a forest blanketed with soft, gleaming snow. However, I was
evoked from my reverie by a vehement cry and I was staring into the eyes of tattered vultures, of
every discrepancy, who recited a prophecy only I could hear. "Who dares enter our land!" they
screeched in a dissonant manner. Trembling, I gazed at the sun and was standing amidst a perpetual
desert – the vultures' eyes glued to me. I froze with fear, though the sun baked my skin. "A meal for
today," the vultures rasped flamboyantly, "cooked to a crisp!" "Uh," I sighed, "I couldn't wait 10
minutes to save me from you repulsive demons!" I woke up like a corpse rises from the grave, my
red eyes flooded with tears. The cool air lulled my throat; dissipating the faint memory of a raging
fire and loathsome vultures scavenging my flesh. As the tears coated my face, I sat up until a
symphony of cracks sang from my spine. Despite the agonizing pain, I turned around and the world
revealed itself as a contemporary

My Journey With Illness
"I soon realized that no journey carries one far unless, it goes an equal distance into the world
within." was said by Lillian Smith. In my life this translates to my journey with illness. When the
journey began, I was 12 and diagnosed with uveitis, which is inflammation in the eye. The journey
from then until now is comparable to wandering in a forest. The forest starts off dark with little–
disjointed spots of light. I did not know I was going into the forest then, I only knew something was
happening and it was supposed to stop if I did all the eye drops. It did not happen that way, instead, I
walked into the forest that would change me and help me discover myself. The time it started was
similar to being pushed into the forest with another diagnosis of glaucoma and the beginning of
juvenile idiopathic arthritis. I was pushed into the forest and looked for all of the speckles of light. It
was like grasping at something that I could not quite understand. I just knew they would take me
somewhere. They were appealing with shifts in the light as breezes came through, and I followed
them and their magnetism. I now know the specks of light were the pieces of who I am with the
illnesses, as well as beyond them. As time moved forward, the lights changed. Sometimes there
were more of them, or I was not paying attention to them. I thought I was stuck in a dark forest and
the lights meant nothing, they were the fact that I could and still can see. I thought all I would ever
be was a sick and that was all I was capable of. A diagnosis was the definition of who I was and I
thought until I went into remission, if I ever go into remission, I could not do anything but that. I
stayed in that mindset for about a year, until I moved on from middle school to high school. More
lights began appearing and I grasped onto them slowly, but I was reaching for them and finding who
I was. I found people that helped me discover what I could do with my illnesses or that they existed
but, I could be more than that. Around my sophomore year I started feeling a little worse which
pushed me back into the forest, a little bit, but it also enabled me to find out more about who I truly
am. The lights seemed to be more abundant and they

Critical Analysis Of Long Day's Journey Into Night
In Anne Fleche's critical analysis essay, "Long Day's Journey into Night: The Seen and the Unseen,"
I can find that her views on the motives of the Tyrones' are parallel to mine. The opening sentence
of her essay is, "The characters in Long Day's Journey into Night find themselves creating a new
kind of religion, in which they experience, not sin without guilt, but guilt without sin––the habit of
belief without its antecedent [preceding event]" (Fleche). In other words, the characters are
recognizing the painfulness of their pasts, no matter how significant the event was. Each of the four
family members, Edmund, James, James Jr., and Mary Tyrone, are dealing with their own painful
disclosures, ranging from Mary's morphine addiction relapse to Edmund's realization that he has
tuberculosis and must enter a sanatorium. These revelations add up over time and it seems as if the
family is going to fall apart because of doubts and lack of remedies for their struggles.
In a typical story of success and happiness, a certain person or group starts off being lost or faced
with a challenge. Then, they face the challenge, break through it, and finally find themselves on a
path to a new life. Long Day's Journey Into Night, however, is quite the opposite. Fleche says, "If it
were possible to say that something could be more lost, Long Day's Journey into Night could be
described as a play in which what is lost in the beginning becomes progressively, hopelessly,
implacably lost" (Fleche).

My Singing Journey

  • 1. My Singing Journey A friend from my childhood once told me "dream on, and sing louder". This friend pushed this saying deep into my heart until it made it seem as if it kept my heart beating. I never really began to understand what she meant when she repeated this saying to me until she explained it. She said to me that to dream on is to not give up, and to sing louder is to not let anyone take my voice away from me. Singing has always been a huge part in my life from singing in talent shows to singing in the shower. My mother said that I never stopped singing. The journey of my singing began with my first School of Rock program and is now being pursued on my churches worship team today. Before I start to tell you about my singing journey, I feel as if I should explain why I started to sing in the first place. It all began when I was four years old, my older sister Kassidy would always, and I mean always, be listening to music in her room and singing. As we grew up she learned how to play the guitar and how to write songs. She inspired me to sing and I couldn't thank her enough for it. When my sister was 12 years old she started to get involved in this program named School of Rock. When she would sing on that stage I constantly wished that I was her. I could not wait until I was in the 7th grade so that I could be a part of it as well. The day eventually came and I was terrified. School of Rock is a program in which you get placed into bands by instructors, then you perform on stage a week ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. How To Write A Rhetorical Analysis Of A Snowstorm This painting is about a lower–class family that is going through a snowstorm in the middle of the winter to survive instead of just staying inside the warm house. This painting is called the snowstorm and was painted by Francisco Goya to illustrate a lighter but still hard time in life. This painting is about a family out in a snowstorm and illustrates a lot about the character of the family with the hardships that they went through, along with the desperation and willpower to survive. While the family is out in the middle of the snowstorm they have many hardships to deal with. The family is all grouped together in the middle of the painting with their jackets wrapped around them and their heads facing down to keep warm with snow in every direction of them as if they don't want to travel. This shows that the family is cold and, yet they have to face the hardship of the winter. The tree next to the family is severely swayed to the right the branch in front of the family was broken off from the tree and laying on the ground showing how hard it was to face the cold and wind of the storm. A dog is in front of the family at attention on all four feet with the dog's paw prints trailing the dog showing that the family is moving in the direction away from the prints. There is a dead pig draped across and the back of a mule and tied down to it, along with a man on the left side has a gun in between his arms tucked into his body as if he is the one who hunts the food for the family. ... • 3. Analysis of Eugene O'Neill's Long Day’s Journey into Night... In the early 20th century, America was moving up socially and economically because of the advancing technology. The standard of living was vastly improving, and people lived a much better condition; however, women were still trapped in the world of patriarchy during this time period. Patriarchy is a social system that "privileges men by promoting traditional gender roles" which casts men as "rational, strong, protective, and decisive" while woman as "emotional (irrational), weak, nurturing, and submissive" (Tyson 85). Because of such system, women are indoctrinated into the mentality that they are inferior to men. In the play, Long Day's Journey into Night, Eugene O'Neill portrays Mary Tyrone, the female protagonist, was being oppressed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The reason that women were subordinate to men was because society believes women are physically weaker than men; so they are unsuitable for hard outdoor labor or heavy–duty work (Clive, Tim and Robert). Because of such tradition, these women became dependent to their husbands and did not have the same freedom that the men enjoyed. In the play, Mary is a beautiful woman and lives the life like any other girls of her time; but she is emotionally attached to her sons and her family when she marries into the Tyrone family. She is also getting old, so she keeps going on her days worrying about her change of appearance. She suffers from a morphine addiction and she is psychologically wounded because of her past. She tries many times to break free but she could not stop as she spends time with her family. She has gone through many struggles but she cannot move on with her life. She keeps looking back into the past; and she regrets marrying into the family because of the dreams she had to sacrifice such as becoming a nun or a concert pianist. At the beginning, Mary was not on morphine until the death of her second son, Eugene. She is traumatized and she is afraid when she is pregnant with the third child. That is when morphine is first subscribed to her as a painkiller. The morphine relieves her from the pains but it also makes herself addict to it. Every time she runs away from a problem, she ... • 4. Summary Of Written By Roger House Essay FOREWORD BY ROGER HOUSE My wife woke up one Monday morning and was making her way to the bathroom when she noticed a trail of blood. She was twelve weeks pregnant and now she was hemorrhaging. We called the doctor and were told we had lost our baby and needed to get to the hospital as soon as possible for surgery. All I could do was fall to the floor and cry. The next thing I did was call as many friends and churches as possible to ask them to pray. We made our way to the hospital, were put in an examination room and left there. No one checked on us. No one examined my wife. Finally, after nine hours of waiting, a doctor peeked in the room to see why we were still there. We told him our story and he put his fetal stethoscope on and started listening to my wife's belly. • 7. Rembrandt's Christ In The Storm On The Sea Of Galilee A painting captures a single moment. Most of the time, the audience does not see what happens before and after the moment of the piece, but Rembrandt's Christ in the Storm on the Sea of Galilee is his depiction of Mark 4:35:39, a story that most children learn in Sunday School. Mark 4:35–36 tells the moments before the storm: "On that day, when evening had come, He told them, 'Let's cross over to the other side of the sea.' So they left the crowd and took Him along since He was already in the boat. And other boats were with Him" (The Bible). Rembrandt fabricates the scene of verse 37 and 38: "A fierce windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking over the boat, so that the boat was already being swamped. Raetta Parker notes, "Black is a mysterious color associated with fear and the unknown" and "denotes strength" (Parker). For this purpose, Rembrandt uses the storm to symbolize the hard times, or "storms", in a person's life. In this case, the strength of the storm is overpowering the boat, making it hard for the disciples to keep the boat from being destroyed and overtaken. By looking at the picture, the storm has cause one of the riggings to break free from the boat and tore the sail, not standing a chance against the strong winds the storm is throwing at them. Also, the dark colors of the overcast prevent the disciples from being able to see the shores. There is no place for the disciples to dock the boat until the storm passes by, stuck in the middle of the storm Comparing the painting to life's challenges, people can often be broken emotionally or physically, whether it may be a death of a loved one or having to face a terminal illness. The Concept of Time in Eugene O'Neill's Long Day's Journey into Night The pre–Socratic Greek philosopher Heraclitus said in his theory of the Universal Flux that "everything flows and nothing abides; everything gives way and nothing stays fixed. You cannot step twice into the same river, for other waters and yet others go ever flowing on... Time is a child moving counters in a game." (Allen 103) And so it is with the characters in Eugene O'Neill's Long Day's Journey into Night. Time is little more than a game in which they move as checkers, if not pawns. Louis Sheaffer, says the loss of all sense of time by Mary is shown "as the mother, fathoms deep in morphine, trails the now–bedraggled (wedding) gown on the floor while she rambles on vaguely about seeking something she had lost." (Goldberg 3) But the loss of soul–in–time is even more acutely shown in two other passages. A foghorn continually bothers the characters all during the play, ostensibly drawing them back into the present. At one point, Mary confides to the servant–girl after a foghorn blast, "It wasn't the fog I minded Cathleen. It hides you from the world and the world from you... The goal of this thesis is to satisfy this curiosity and to determine, through textual and visual analyses, if the 1986 television series also carries a Confucian message, or whether it was solely produced for entertainment purposes. This leads to the following research question: How does the 1986 television series Journey to the West convey the novel's original Confucian message, and what does this suggest for its production purposes? I argue that authors and producers often attempt to impose their own set of cultural and political ideologies on its audience through a certain depiction of right and wrong. In this manner, works of fiction might influence, perhaps even alter, the ideologies of the audience.[3] Accordingly, analyzing the depiction of ideologies in media content can serve as a basis for further research on if and how producers intend to influence their audience.

What Is The Story Of The Storm Short Story Peter stood surrounded by cold darkness and stale, dusty air he was full of happiness and joy unlike most people in the Storm, where you are forced to do everything that you are told to do including no happy thoughts or fun. You were told to do a certain job, you were told if you were allowed children and how many you were allowed, it was a gloomy place to be for Peter. He had 2 brothers and a mother who was a clerk at a local store and he had a dad who worked in the mines which is what male people would have to work in once there 18. Peter was 16 and his brothers were 15 and 14 their names were James and Derrick, Derrick being the youngest was forced to work for King Storm as an adherent where he would have to make sure that the family was following rules and if not he was to report it and was rewarded for it but if was hiding it would get painful death. This was generally how families would work in Storm. Peter and James were very close together, they both had happiness in them but was hard to keep it under control when Derrick was home. Every night Peter and James thought of ways to escape this dark place they lived in and escape to happiness. On the other side of Storm was Peace where you were free to explore and was a beautiful place where there where skyscrapers and was light and you got to choose your path of life. This was the real life they wanted to live in. One night while Derrick was asleep Peter and James decided to think of a way to escape this hardship and run off to a happy place for them. Once the electricity was down they would try to escape without getting caught by the guards once there out they run for their lives, they thought hard "If we are trying to escape we need to bring Mum and Dad with us" said James "Hmmm not sure cause they will be mad if do and Derrick will find out" replied Peter "But...... if we

Wu Cheng's The Journey To The West Chapter one of Wu Cheng'en's classical story, The Journey to the West, introduces the main character, Monkey, by providing background information about his origin and early life. Monkey lived equally along with gibbons and baboons who he considered his kin until he was appointed to king of the Blessed Land of Flower Fruit Mountain. This transition from an unstructured, free will society to an orderly kingdom portrays the social changes humans experienced when dynasties arose in civilization. After Monkey gained the title of king, certain changes occurred. After Monkey became king, their activities depended on the season, which another poem portrays; "In the spring they gathered flowers for food and drink. In the summer they went in quest of fruits for sustenance. In the autumn they amassed taros and chestnuts to ward off time. In the winter they searched for yellow–sperms to live out the year" (Cheng'en, 178). The newly civilized, ruled monkeys no longer roamed aimlessly playing with one another, but had jobs that would ensure their survival. This societal change is also reflected in the late Ming dynasties idea of radical individualism. In this time, the text argues that "personal freedom had been celebrated at the expense of social responsibility" (World Literature, 169). The monkeys now had responsibilities to attend to, likely with the king's instruction, when before they were liable for little ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

With O'neill's use of elements such as diction, syntax, selection of details and method of organization, he is able to create such an accurate play, depicting a situation similar to his own, filled with gloominess and alcohol. As for the narrator of the play, there really isn't one, but it is shown that Edmund Tyrone in the play reflects O'neill, as he once suffered from consumption just like Edmund. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... More than once, Edmund is seen telling all the other characters to stop when they are arguing, like saying "Cut it out, Papa" or "Mama, don't". Edmund can also resort to violence to keep the peace, e.g. Edmund slaps Jamie, in defense of his mother, when he goes too far by saying "The Mad Scene. Enter Ophelia" (Pg. 174) after his mother makes a scene while she isn't sane. This exemplifies Edmund's need for peace and respect amidst everything that is going on around him, and also his love for his family. Edmund is an intellectual and enjoys poetry and philosophy. Edmund cites many poems and his philosophy accordingly to the topic of the conversation, which shows that Edmund finds his great escape through poetry and philosophy, or rather art. It is his way to cope with and escape the problems that his family face, unlike the rest of the characters. This is very much like Tom Wingfield in The Glass Menagerie who also finds his escape through poetry. In conclusion, the struggles that the Tyrones face are described descriptively, such as Edmund's alcoholism, Mary's morphine addiction, James' stinginess or Jamie's failure in life, all of which were through different elements. Symbolisms in the play also provide a means of escape for the character, in a stuffy situation. Edmund, unlike his family, is blameless of the situation, which kind of makes him a protagonist in the play. Fortunately, Edmund can use his talent of words and philosophy to virtually send himself into a world full with rainbows and unicorns, leaving behind this dark of a ... • 18. Essay on Anaylysis of Journey to the West Does the idea of a 'journey' apply to Tripitaka's pilgrimage? If so, how? The idea of embarking on journeys has stood the test of time – early man explored uncharted territories, while modern citizens jump at the chance to have an overseas experience. Are we truly concerned with materialistic experiences, or are we seeking to expand our horizons ? The term pilgrimage itself suggests a journey to a geographical location of spiritual importance. However, journey in this case may not solely be categorized as physical travel but also as the voyage of soul development. Tripitaka's pilgrimage is more likely a spiritual journey to enlightenment than a mission to retrieve Buddhist scriptures from the West. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (Vol 1, P.436) The series of events undergone by Tripitaka continues to suggest that the idea of experiencing a journey outweighs objective fulfilment. In the final chapters of the book, when Tripitaka arrives in India, the deities observe that he only has undergone eighty trials. Consequently, after being given the scriptures, several deities magically carried him to an area where he would have a confrontation with a giant turtle he encountered along his pilgrimage, thus orchestrating one final trial before his enlightenment. First and foremost, Long Day Journey into night by Eugene O'neill and Macbeth by Shakespeare share a common theme with each other. The characters in both of these dramas lack communication with one another. Let's examine Macbeth first. • 25. Essay about Long Day's Journey into Night Eugene by O'Neill In the play Long Day's Journey Into Night by Eugene O'Neill, the Tyrone family is haunted not by what is present in flesh facing them, but by memories and constant reminders of what has been the downfall of the family for years. " No it can never be now. But it was once, before you–" (72) [James Tyrone referring to the Morphine addiction of his wife, Mary, which attributed to the undoing of the family]. Their trials and tribulations are well documented by O'Neill through the proficient utilization of theme, characterization, plot, setting, and style. Throughout the play, O'Neill's theme is one of a disclosure into the life of a seemingly normal family on the outside yet convoluted with bitterness on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "I hope, sometime, without meaning it, I will take an overdose. I never could do it deliberately. The Blessed Virgin could never forgive me, then." Through this tough time he is faced with personal, family, and financial conflicts, thus attributing to the plot. Besides having to deal with his wife's addiction, his sons' ill health and drinking problems, and his financial decisions, (which have proven to be for the worse), James struggles with a personal conflict throughout the play. He believes that he may be the cause of some of the family problems and that he has dealt with them in an improper manner. "So I'm to blame!..." (39) The setting of the play is the Tyrones' Puritan New England home, which provides for many of the arguments that take place in the novel. These arguments often arise due to the fact that their house never really felt like a true home to them. "I never felt it was my home. It was wrong from the start" (44) The town in which the ... In "To Build a Fire" by Jack London, the setting plays a significant role throughout the entire short story. London uses certain techniques to establish the atmosphere of the story. By introducing his readers to the setting, prepares them for a tone that is depressed and frightening. Isolated by the hostile environment of the Yukon in sub–freeing temperatures, a man falls victim to the unrelenting and unforgiving power of nature, London shows us how the main character of the story is completely unaware of his surroundings. But, we realize almost immediately, the man has only a superficial knowledge of the Arctic. As he stands on a bank of the Yukon about to plunge into an almost absolute wilderness, he has little or no understanding either of his immense isolation relative to his surroundings or of the extreme danger posed by the cold snap. But all of this, London comments at the beginning of the third paragraph, "The mysterious, far–reaching hair–line trail, the absence of sun from the sky, the tremendous cold, and the strangeness and weirdness of it all, made no impression on the man." Thus, the man also knows, in addition to the fact the sun will reappear, that it is fifty degrees below zero, but he does not know the meaning of this fact, it portends death for anyone who makes himself vulnerable to its ability to kill. "Fifty degrees below zero was to him just precisely fifty degrees below zero. That there should be anything more to it than that was a thought that never entered his head." During his journey, the man gets his feet wet as he falls through the ice into the water of a hot spring. Because of the severity of the cold, the man's life depends upon his ability to adapt to his surroundings. A Comparison of A Long Day 's Journey Into Night and Birdman In the art of storytelling, the artist tends to rely on a specific pattern of story development. This pattern, as we have seen in the numerous literary examples that we have read so far, naturally conforms to a rigid framework–one that we, as humans, repeatedly desire. This framework was described by Dan Harmon as "the story circle", and mirrors the cyclical nature of our conscious perceptive capabilities, as well as our understanding of the universe surrounding us. The story circle identifies (from the perspective of the character or characters we primarily identify with) a submersion and re–emergence in some manner, whether journeying physically or ... The pursuit of harmony captivates and empowers each member of the Tyrone family, and the hope of true happiness drives them. Whether through the use of forced optimism, blissful ignorance, or denial, the words and actions of the family are intended to lift "the fog" of a broken past and enter into a new era of trust, support, and overall positivity. Evidence of a broken, almost irredeemable past is made readily available to the reader, and one gets the sense that despite all reason to doubt the intentions of the other, each of the Tyrones has completely crossed into an attempted realm of newfound hope. As their past continually rears its powerful and conspicuous head, a philosophical battle between existentialism and nihilism continually fuels the crossing. James bashes his eldest son for his growing doubt of the success of this new covenant, stating "By God, how you can live with a mind that sees nothing but the worst motives behind everything is beyond me!" (O'Neil 39). Likewise, Mary, in denial of the severity of her youngest boy's illness, and Edmund, maintaining ignorance so as to maintain the illusion of the possibility of wholeness, display their desperation in the following: "You mustn 't cough like that. In China, one of the Great Classic Novels, The Journey to the West, was written by Wu Cheng'en in the 16th century during the late Ming dynasty (1590–1644) when capitalism began to develop. The book describes a Buddhist monk Tripitaka and his four disciples: Monkey, Pigsy, Sandy and White horse, and how they battled with different demons on the way to the west in order to get Buddhist scriptures. In the novel, Monkey had its own name called Sun Wukong. The first name Wukong had a Buddhist meaning which is "Aware of Vacuity." • 30. A Sentimental Journey Through France And Italy 'The prevailing cast of this period is not melancholy nor tragedy but farce'. Discuss in relation to A Sentimental Journey. There exists the idea that the period occupied by sentiment was one of refined and intellectual emotion. However, it seems that if this notion ever existed, it was quickly overcome with literature occupying the theme of farce, either ironically or obliviously. A specific example we can point to to clearly demonstrate this idea is A Sentimental Journey through France and Italy by Laurence Sterne. While some contemporaries adored Sterne's work on a serious sentimental level, many other critics, both past and present, see it instead as a conscious farcical parody of the idea and concept of sentiment that was so revered and admired at the time. In A Sentimental Journey we see various elements of farce through the different aspects presented to us as readers, ranging from the characters within the story, with a focus on Mr. Yorick, our main character, and farce is even present in the form of the book itself. And it is these factors we will examine that highlight the farcical nature, not only of A Sentimental Journey, but most likely a great deal of sentimental literature written of the time. The first thing to address before we dive too deeply into the exploration of comedy and farce specifically in A Sentimental Journey, we must first dissect what is meant by the term "farce" itself. Journey to Ixtlan: Getting the Message Across Essay Now I do not know what Carlos Castaneda was smoking while he wrote Journey to Ixtlan: the Lessons of Don Juan, but it sure did bring out his creative side. Throughout Journey to Ixtlan, the reader is constantly perplexed and confused by the enigma that is don Juan. Don Juan is a teacher, if you want to call him that, and he teaches Castaneda how to stop the world and how to erase personal history. In reality I really do not think don Juan existed, he was merely a figment of Castaneda's peyote–influenced imagination. Again I bring back the effects of peyote as a possible hindrance to Castaneda's ability to fully grasp this concept. It is totally plausible that this ten year apprenticeship was merely a waste of time, because at the end Castaneda gets in his car, and drives away, admitting that he was not yet ready to take on the world the way don Juan and don Genaro wanted him to. He realized that it was just not his time, and he was not yet able to find his ally, which he had been working towards for years. Here he may not have been under the influence of peyote as without the effects of the drug; he is not prepared to take on the full meaning of "stopping the world." However, I feel that by walking away he is going to use what he learned. Castaneda is going to return Los Angeles with a new view on life, and a new perception of things. When he returns, nothing will be the same, and his mindset will remain forever altered, as don Juan and don Genaro point out that it will never be the same; just as they will never reach Ixtlan, Castaneda will never reach his `ideal' Los Angeles. His life was rampant with confusion and addictions in his family. Each character in this play has a profound resemblance, and draws parallels and connections with a member of his own family. The long journey that the title of the play refers to is a journey into his past. Fog is a recurring metaphor in the play; it is a physical presence even before it becomes a crucial symbol of the family's impenetrable confusion. The introductory image establishes the fog as both the intermediary and a symbol of Mary's addiction. The fog is easily identifiable as Mary's morphine high, representative of her cloudy mental state. Mary sinks back into her addiction as the night falls and slowly regresses further away from reality and her family. The fog signifies the state of mind that she is in. Fog has a dense and opaque quality that creates low visibility and blocks out the sun. The fog described in the stage directions is "...as a white curtain drawn down outside the windows" (O'Neill 773). Mary tells Cathleen how she loves the fog, which can be interpreted as her love for the morphine that removes her from any type of coherence. Mary was on a path to recovery and now has slowly lapsed into her state of addiction once again. She likes this state because " It hides you from the world and the world from you. No one can find or touch you any more" (O'Neill 773). For Mary, this fog is representative as an alternative or refuge from reality. Her relapse into addition causes clouds her judgment and impairs her sight. She can hide herself in the fog so that her family can be oblivious to her addiction. • 40. My Journey With Illness "I soon realized that no journey carries one far unless, it goes an equal distance into the world within." was said by Lillian Smith. In my life this translates to my journey with illness. When the journey began, I was 12 and diagnosed with uveitis, which is inflammation in the eye. The journey from then until now is comparable to wandering in a forest. The forest starts off dark with little– disjointed spots of light. I did not know I was going into the forest then, I only knew something was happening and it was supposed to stop if I did all the eye drops. It did not happen that way, instead, I walked into the forest that would change me and help me discover myself. The time it started was similar to being pushed into the forest with another diagnosis of glaucoma and the beginning of juvenile idiopathic arthritis. I was pushed into the forest and looked for all of the speckles of light. It was like grasping at something that I could not quite understand. I just knew they would take me somewhere. They were appealing with shifts in the light as breezes came through, and I followed them and their magnetism. I now know the specks of light were the pieces of who I am with the illnesses, as well as beyond them. As time moved forward, the lights changed. Sometimes there were more of them, or I was not paying attention to them. I thought I was stuck in a dark forest and the lights meant nothing, they were the fact that I could and still can see. I thought all I would ever be was a sick and that was all I was capable of. A diagnosis was the definition of who I was and I thought until I went into remission, if I ever go into remission, I could not do anything but that. I stayed in that mindset for about a year, until I moved on from middle school to high school. More lights began appearing and I grasped onto them slowly, but I was reaching for them and finding who I was. I found people that helped me discover what I could do with my illnesses or that they existed but, I could be more than that. Around my sophomore year I started feeling a little worse which pushed me back into the forest, a little bit, but it also enabled me to find out more about who I truly am. Critical Analysis Of Long Day's Journey Into Night In Anne Fleche's critical analysis essay, "Long Day's Journey into Night: The Seen and the Unseen," I can find that her views on the motives of the Tyrones' are parallel to mine. The opening sentence of her essay is, "The characters in Long Day's Journey into Night find themselves creating a new kind of religion, in which they experience, not sin without guilt, but guilt without sin––the habit of belief without its antecedent [preceding event]" (Fleche). In other words, the characters are recognizing the painfulness of their pasts, no matter how significant the event was. Each of the four family members, Edmund, James, James Jr., and Mary Tyrone, are dealing with their own painful disclosures, ranging from Mary's morphine addiction relapse to Edmund's realization that he has tuberculosis and must enter a sanatorium. These revelations add up over time and it seems as if the family is going to fall apart because of doubts and lack of remedies for their struggles. In a typical story of success and happiness, a certain person or group starts off being lost or faced with a challenge. Then, they face the challenge, break through it, and finally find themselves on a path to a new life. Long Day's Journey Into Night, however, is quite the opposite. Fleche says, "If it were possible to say that something could be more lost, Long Day's Journey into Night could be described as a play in which what is lost in the beginning becomes progressively, hopelessly, implacably lost" (Fleche). ...
