My chosen genre for my
      magazine
I have chosen rap
• The reasons behind choosing Rap I believe that I started to
enjoy the music from a young age. Having influences from my
parents from the music they have lived with and grown to like
they were very much into rock and pop music. Then during
school my peers from all different backgrounds had there own
favourite genre which I started to listen to and collect a range
of styles. Having a range of people will all different tastes
interested me to explore a variety of genres.
• I believe that people start to listen to what the majority of
there peers do for other reasons than having a general
interest. It gives you extra to talk about and share with them
  when you are together.
The history of rap
• It originated from Africa. Where people were telling stories
rhythmically at this time the only backing music would be from a
    beat of a drum.
In the 1970s Rap became popular in the U.S musicians were telling
stories rhythmically, although all different areas had a variation to
the genre. Artists from the Caribbean Islands were also telling
stories but used more rhyming words/beat.
These styles from a range of different locations combined for a
    American rap music genre.
Over the years it has developed spreading to the U.K. and now its a
culture within its self, you don't have to be from certain place to be
able to listen. In England, London was a very popular place where
there are many well known artists coming through the ranks where
they are producing songs that are seen in the chart today.
How rap has developed
Rap has developed over the years in many different forms like:
Styles- the growing interests in the early years when rap
originated from Africa it would normally be said to the beat of a
drum but as it moved to America and spreading globally
everyone added there own twist on the genre
New technology - Instruments and beats were added to give
different effects, as the generations go on some sounds are
produced/modified by computers. The internet has played a part
in spreading the genre also.
Lyrics and language used- when rap started lyrics used were
mostly about political events and the persons view on them also
certain clothing
What influence has technology had on
             your genre?
• Technology has had a influence to the development of
rap, most rap artists first used old scratching disc were the
first used to create different sounds and styles.
• Computer systems and technology you find in recording
studios now have a had a major influence on rap. You can
make different styles and bars to a song the technology allows
you to mix and combined different beats. This gives artists
something new or the chance to create and edit previous
  songs.
• Each different artist is normally recognised from a particular
style they would benefit from the technology and would
widen the audience they appeal to.
The influence that other media like TV
shows have had on the genre
• An example is the X-Factor: I don’t feel that
the TV shows have had a big influence on rap
because you get the occasional artists that
auditions and makes a career from it.
• In my opinion I see the X-Factor as being a
show for pop music that is there main
audience. Other channels like you have on sky
like ‘AKA’ and free request shows influence
  peoples thoughts on rap.
Micro elements of rap and how I could
include them in my magazine to attract the
                audience
• Bling
• Cars
• Designer/expensive clothing
• graffiti
• Streets
• Symbols
The pictures show rap artists in different locations where they
include some micro elements of rap.
For example in the picture on the left lil’ Wayne has tattoos of
tears under his eye this symbol has a meaning from the
street/rap culture.
In the middle picture the artist has designer clothing on with a
big chain which shows us that shows us that its the centre piece
that the jewellery and himself are worth a big sum.
The right hand side picture has a street setting which shows the
‘gangster’ aspect of rap this wouldn't appeal to many people
listening and looking at the genre. But the street picture does
represent some lyrics you may find in rap songs.
