4. TheBasicStory
In this novel a boy named Tim has to deal with the horrors of war. For Tim these include the
enlistment of his brother, Sam. A fine young man, Sam is faced with a tough choice; join the
fight against the British or finish college. Much to his loyalist father’s dismay, Sam becomes
a patriot soldier. Above, depicts the fighting between the two nations.

5. Consequences
Tim, who has always looked up to his brother, is “Caught between a rock and a hard place.” If he chooses
his fathers side he feels Sam will resent him. If he becomes sympathetic to Sam’s cause the same thing
might happen with his father. This memento shows what Tim has to decide between.

6. Decisions
Both the British and the Americans altered Tim’s life. The “Lobster backs,” killed some of his neighbors,
but the Patriots ransacked houses and made prisoners of other people Tim knew. These actions help to
sway his decision. Show above is the rifle Sam would have used.

7. TheEnding
In the end Tim does not choose a side. However, Sam’s regiment camps a short distance from the Meeker home. One
night while visiting his family, he finds soldiers steeling cows. The thieves beat Sam up and accuse him of steeling the
cattle. He is thrown in prison and awaits execution. To find out the rest, you must read the book for yourself. This
memento is a noose.
