Matilda is a young girl who was bought from a baby shop and lives with mean parents who often leave her alone. On one such occasion, Matilda makes herself pancakes while reading the newspaper. The next day, Matilda goes to the library by herself and reads both children's books and large adult books with over 1000 pages. When Matilda asks her father for a book to read at home, he refuses and tells her to watch TV instead, even though Matilda insists she is old enough for school.
