1. Music video narrative analysis
Muse-Hysteria
Intro
Hotel corridor with a maid about to open a door. We see that behind
the door is an unconscious man. The maid tries opening the door and
the man then wakes up, races across the room and then slams the
door shut. The maid then leaves as the man slowly walks back
towards his bed.
Verse 1
As the man walks back towards his bed, he starts looking around
dazedly. The lyrics he start as “Its bugging me, grating me”
The man then looks around at the room and we see that everything is
broken and smashed. We see a shot of the man in the room
surrounded by the carnage to the lyrics “twisting me around”
These lyrics along with the video suggest that the man has been
going through some sort of internal conflict.
The next set of lyrics are “Yeah im endlessly, caving in, and turning
inside out” reinforce this idea of a personal struggle which is being
shown in the video as the man looks for and finds a video camera.
Chorus
The chorus “cause I want it now, I want it now, Give me your heart
and your soul, And I’m breaking our, I’m breaking out, last chance to
lose control” then plays as the man looks through the camcorder to
see videos of a woman. He then plays these videos to find that
whoever owned the camcorder was following a woman everywhere.
We see that the man clearly is affectionate towards the woman
however it’s unclear what his relationship is to her.
2. Verse 2
The man continues to watch the tapes that show the woman going
about her day-to-day business as the 2nd verse starts.
Similar to the 1st verse, the lyrics to the 2nd verse make mention to
something however its still unclear what that is. We can infer that it’s
the woman on the videotapes as the lyrics mention both feeling alive
and being cold emotionally.
We see that some of the footage shows the woman standing around
on the street corner approaching cars that slow down for her.
At this point it seems likely that the woman is a prostitute and that is
why the man, who clearly has feelings for her, seems so troubled.
Chorus
Upon finding out this woman is a prostitute the man takes the hotel
phone and smashes it onto the floor. This could be why the hotel
room was smashed at the beginning as we are seeing how he came to
be unconscious in the room. The man still continues to watch the
tapes as he angrily searches around the room for the next one.
We then see that the man actually approached the prostitute and was
recording the footage of her undressing is his room however he came
to understand that they could never have a relationship and he took
it out on her and kicked her off the bed.
We see the man then getting angry both on the videotapes and
watching them as he then tries to comfort her, the same man
watching then proceeds to throw the camcorder onto the floor.
Outro
An instrumental plays as the man smashes the hotel rooms cross cut
with footage of the woman running away and then getting undressed
again. The outro then plays which is similar to the previous verses
however instead of talking about something its talking about
someone. We then see the man shouting in the hotel room and then
lying on the bed however the narrative ends where the woman is
arriving in the mans hotel room while he holds a camcorder.
