The Department of Housing and Urban Development was established in 1965 by President Lyndon B. Johnson to create affordable housing and sustainable communities free from discrimination. It administers major affordable housing and homelessness programs, works to strengthen the housing market and improve quality of living, and enforces laws against discrimination in housing. In 2010, HUD awarded over $68 million jointly with the Department of Transportation to support livable communities with housing, jobs, and transportation access.
