MULTI-
CULTURISM
PRESENTED BY:
GROUP 3
Multiculturalism:
It refers to the state of a society or the world in which there exists
numerous distinct ethnics.
Origin :
Multi- means "many," and cultural comes from the Latin cultura
means, "cultivating.“
Multiculturalism began as part of the pragmatism movement at
the end of the 19th century in Europe and the United States,
then as political and cultural pluralism at the turn of the 20th
century.
Multi-culturalism in simple words:
Multi-culturalism is a situation in which all the different cultural or racial
groups in a society have equal rights and opportunities, and none is ignored
or regarded as unimportant.
Some Examples Of Multi-culturalism:
Multicultural individuals — such as Chinese-Canadians, Turkish-Germans, or
Arab-Americans — commonly think, perceive, behave, and respond to
global workplace issues in more complex ways than monocultural individuals.
Some multicultural individuals translate these differences into career success.
Importance of Multi-culturalism:
Multiculturalism has many benefits. The main one is that it encourages
open-mindedness amongst different groups of people and it dispels
negative stereotypes. This is extremely important as the UN reported that
1/3 of the world's major conflicts have a cultural dimension to them.
Four principles of Multi-culturalism:
Multicultural policy and programs continue to emphasize the traditional
multicultural principles of diversity, harmony, equality, resource, and
overcoming barriers.
What are the Three types of Multi-culturalism?
Three kinds of multiculturalism can be identified as coexisting in the same
society:
• Ethnic
• Linguistic
• National multiculturalism
Cultural implications:
Cultural implications refer to the effects that a policy, action, event, or
movement have on a particular culture.
How to Manage a Multicultural Team
1. Overcome Language and Cultural Barriers. ...
2. Consider Different Cultural Communication Styles. ...
3. Plan Projects Around Different Time Zones. ...
4. Allow Prep Time Whenever Your Team Needs It. ...
5. Be Open to All Cultures and Their Differences. ...
6. Organize a Cross-Cultural Training. ...
7. Avoid Stereotypes.
How does multiculturalism make us stronger?
In addition, Scientific American found that exposure to diversity
changes the way people think and ultimately improves innovation,
creativity, and problem-solving skills, which makes us smarter. In
addition, Antonio in 2004 have suggested that diversity triggers
cognitive thinking.
Four Benefits of Living in a Multicultural Society
• More Lifestyle Options. ...
• Increased Awareness of Cultural Identity. ...
• Tolerance and Open-Mindedness. ...
• Creativity and Innovation.
.
How can we prevent conflict in multiculturalism?
Learning about other cultures. People can prevent cross-cultural
conflicts by learning about cultures that they come in contact
with. This knowledge can be obtained through training programs,
general reading, talking to people from different cultures, and
learning from past experiences.
How can we promote multiculturalism?
Respect and celebrate the various ethnic, racial, cultural, and other
differences in your group. Make the time and create the space for
this to occur. Cultivate a multicultural atmosphere. Incorporate
language, art, music, rituals, and ways of working together that
derive from diverse cultures.
Advantages:
• Different Perspectives
• Growth and Learning
• More Lifestyle Options
• Open-Mindedness
Disadvantages:
• Social Conflict
• weak minority
• Ineffective communication
• Racial discrimination
What is a weakness of multiculturalism?
Separate and Parallel Lives. A chief criticism of multiculturalism as an
ideology is that it promotes separate and parallel lives among ethnic
minorities and immigrants.
What is the biggest issue with multiculturalism?
National unity could become impossible if people see themselves as
members of ethnic or racial groups rather than as citizens of a common
country. The second is that multiculturalism undermines the notion of
equal individual rights, thereby weakening the political value of equal
treatment.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, three main causes of multiculturalism have been listed:
international labor, international student, and refugee. It is undeniable
that multiculturalism has its advantages, it makes the world colorful,
demolishes prejudice, enhances social creativity, and benefits the economy. However, the
drawback should be mentioned as well, such as social conflict, marginalization,
etc., multicultural societies surely have more benefits than its disadvantages, as long as it
is managed properly. In general, multiculturalism is a great opportunity
with challenges, such a trend is unavoidable all over the world. People are supposed
to embrace it, with a kind positive comprehensive state of mind.
