We gathered under the hangar for the inaugural Meet and Greet.
Searching through the rows of deliberately placed folding tables,
we located our virtual homes. The space was cleverly set up to
mirror the soon-to-be-completed Section 4 (the first residential
build outs in Mueller). The streets and alleys were all designated
and each lot was labeled with the name of the new pioneer.
Who were all these people with the same adventurous spirit?
Would they be friendly? Would there be any other children?
The pioneers knew there was an element of the great unknown.
We trusted the promise of a future park and pool, a town center,
restaurants, and...other people. Within a couple hours, we had
met dozens of great folks, shared some snacks and left relieved
to know we would be landing in the right neighborhood. It was
clear the Robert Mueller Municipal Airport redevelopment was
going to be something very special.
That was back in 2007. But the first time I knew for sure I loved
Mueller was the night I rode my bike down Antone Street and
heard a festive gathering on a patio. Those lively revelers saluted
me with a jovial “cheer”as I cruised by, and I was hooked. After
living in suburbia for well over a decade, I craved more interaction
with people and less of the long drives to get anywhere. Mueller
truly has the best of both. It is well known around here that if
you spend any time outside you are likely to get “Muellered,”as
one neighbor describes it. Those of you who have been around a
while know what I’m talking about. With homes situated close to
the sidewalks, it is nearly impossible to be anti-social. Morning
coffee on the front porch means chatting with a neighbor or two.
An evening glass of wine on the patio is great for winding down,
but it might also mean an impromptu jam session with a passer-
by.This, fortunately, we have done on several occasions.
Food choices used to be limited to a Starbucks, delivery pizza and
a burrito eatery. Now, there are so many varied options (and so
many more on the horizon) that we are on the cusp of becoming
a bona fide foodie destination. And best yet, most places are with-
in a stroll of our homes. Having the walk-able community which
we were promised is most certainly becoming a reality. With high
density as a target, walking and bike riding are crucial to the suc-
cess of this community. The new dedicated bike lanes throughout
the neighborhood will encourage two-wheeled travelers and ease
congestion on the internal and peripheral roads.
According to the Pecan Street Project, Mueller has the larg-
est concentration of owner installed solar rooftop panels in the
U.S.That says a lot about the people who live here and another
reason I like these Muellerites so much. My family and I knew
early on that we wanted to live more efficiently and with less
reliance on non-renewable resources. So, in 2009 when Austin
Energy gave Mueller a good kick start on solar incentives, we
jumped on the chance to experience sun powered electricity.
And if you like to run, you are probably aware that at comple-
tion, Mueller will have a five-mile hike and bike trail circling
the perimeter of the neighborhood. Joggers can travel through
the Wildflower Center’s educational hub just before they expe-
rience the mini labyrinth in front of Chris Levack’s Pollen
Spore and Teepee (Chris is also a Mueller resident). They can
also dart under Dixie Friend-Gay’s Godzilla-like arachnid. (You
know, that big spider pointing towards the tower to remind us
how this place all started). Runners can take a detour through
Lake Park, Ella Wooten Park or the new fruit and nut orchard
located at the Southwest Greenway. Staying active appears to
be a priority for many of Mueller’s residents.
Without the City of Austin, the master developer Catellus, or
the think tank of visionary neighbors, none of this would be
happening. Mueller has become one of the City of Austin’s
crown jewels. It has been in the national spotlight multiple
times, written about in numerous blogs, aired on NPR and
revered as a cutting edge community the rest of the country
aspires to emulate. But more than anything else, the people
who call Mueller home are the reason many of us have stayed
here. It is filled with a circle of caring, hard-working, kid-
friendly, forward-thinking residents. It takes a village and this
village is making it happen.
On Sunday, I plan to stock up on some fresh veggies, local
snacks and treats. I’ll head down Tom Miller, cross Zach Scott
and walk up the grassy mound to the Mueller Hangar. This
is where we have a weekly Farmer’s Market with live music,
homemade tamales and fresh everything. I’ll probably run into
some neighbors who shared that very first meeting with me
back in 2007, under that very same hangar. Life is good.

You may be wondering why you are reading the word
“resolution” in March while you cringe, having left those
2016 health goals right next to the 7-layer dip at a Super
Bowl party and feeling ashamed ever since. We’ve all been
there, and know it can be tough to stay excited about a new
fitness or health routine with temptations around every
corner. One of the reasons it can be difficult to keep a
New Year’s resolution throughout the year is because it is a
dramatic change that you may not be truly excited about.
Everyone loves results, but challenges that arise from the
starting line to that big goal can be frustrating along the
way. To ensure success even amidst setbacks, here is the
one simple rule to put into practice:
Make Healthy a Habit.
Why are we so likely to go back to eating poorly and being
sedentary after making drastic changes with all the best inten-
tions? Because we have been forming bad habits our whole life
and behaviors that are reinforced over a whole lifetime are very
hard to change. Bad habits come about for all kinds of reasons,
but one thing we know for sure is that they are often tied to
convenience. So the simple answer to forming good habits?
Keep it simple! In order to truly replace a behavior and make it
a good habit over time, we’ve made a to-do list for you to take
the guesswork out of a healthy lifestyle:
Prepare items on the weekend for the whole week ahead.
This may take a few hours out of your Sunday, but you’ll
be thanking yourself on Wednesday night when your din-
ner takes only 5-10 minutes from fridge to belly. A great
example is our favorite go-to side: roasted vegetables. Two
to three pans of chopped veggies (lightly brushed with olive
oil and sprinkled with sea salt and red chili flakes) can be
thrown into the oven for 45 minutes, then portioned out
into Tupperware for convenience. Now you have an easy side
to re-heat every day of the week. Paired with a serving of
quinoa and topped with sliced avocado or fresh salsa, they
are even a meal on their own! We love broccoli, cauliflower,
carrots, okra, sweet potatoes, cherry tomatoes, asparagus,
shallots, snap peas, butternut squash, and bell peppers for a
variety of color and nutrients. There are also so many healthy
dinner options that can be made in a slow cooker while
you’re at work! Placing all of the pre-measured ingredients in
labeled Ziploc bags on Sunday allows you to spend one min-
ute starting your meal before you head out the door. There
are some great slow cooker recipes out there- just be mind-
ful of the ingredients and avoid recipes that include bottled
dressings, excess sugars of any kind, or jarred sauces that
may contain a lot of sodium or preservatives. Fewer, fresher
ingredients are always the best.
Schedule your workouts for the week ahead. Even if that
workout is a simple walk around the neighborhood, writing it
on your agenda is a good reminder that exercise is as impor-
tant as any other meeting because it’s with your best client
or customer- yourself! 45 minutes to one hour four times
a week gives you the time to reflect on your highs and lows
from the day and really recharge your battery. While some-
times it may be hard to get out of the house, getting outside
for a jog on your own, finding a group to work out with, or
going to a yoga class with a friend will be an appointment
you’ll look forward to once it is part of your regular routine.
Write your planned meals on a calendar. Taking some time
to think about your weekly goals will give you the big picture
in one snapshot and allow you to incorporate any scheduled
parties, dinners out, or business lunches on your calendar
that may sabotage your hard work. Have a happy hour that
you just can’t miss? Make sure the meals you’re planning for
breakfast and lunch that day are less indulgent and decide
before you arrive how many drinks you want to order and what
snacks you won’t feel guilty about. Reading the menu ahead is
always a great idea to alleviate the stress of an impulse decision.
These suggestions may seem overwhelming, or complicated,
but changing one small behavior at a time will add up to
big success by the time you’re ready to make resolutions in
2017! Start by eliminating soda (this absolutely includes diet
soda!), or make a commitment to cooking dinner at home on
weekdays. You’ll be surprised at how quickly you’ll adapt and
want to tackle a new challenge.
Whether you’ve fallen off track already, are starting to hit the
wall, or are finding your stride in making 2016 your healthiest
year yet, know that you should be proud of yourself for want-
ing to make positive changes. A huge part of success in creating
good habits is speaking kindly to yourself when you succeed and
when you fail.Think about how you would support your parent,
child or best friends if they were pursuing big goals- you should
be just as encouraging in the way you speak to yourself.

Diversify. Diversify. Diversify. It’s an investment mantra often repeated
to investors looking to manage risk in their portfolio.
The concept works because certain types of securities generally do
better when others don't.Savvy investors know that if they have
enough variety in their portfolio, they will almost always have at
least some investments that are performing better than others.
These days more and more investors are taking diversification a step
further, reasoning that if diversifying their investments can help
them manage risk in their portfolios, then diversifying their finan-
cial advisers could do the same.By splitting their money between
two or more financial advisers, they hope to beat the possibility of
portfolio losses and improve their investment returns.
In fact, the opposite is more likely to be true, according to a 2011
study from the Wharton School of Business at the University of
Pennsylvania.Simply dividing money among multiple advisers
doesn’t decrease risk. In many cases it increases it.
The problem? If one adviser manages some of your money and
another adviser manages the rest, they may be working at cross
purposes.Unless they communicate with one another each will
manage your money independently,recommending investment
decisions that either overlap or are in conflict with one another.
The result? Your overall portfolio contains large concentrations of
certain types of investments because both of your advisers are put-
ting money into the same securities or sectors.
Or,your portfolio is full of competing investments that neutralize
your strategy.
In each case, your portfolio could end up as a hodgepodge of
investments with no one considering how each fits into your over-
all financial plan.Unwittingly, you’ve just created more risk, not
less, for your portfolio. As more advisers are added to the mix,the
potential for risk and loss of focus grow exponentially.
If you’re turning to multiple advisers, you must take the responsibility
for trying to coordinate their activities. That requires time and hard
work.Without a complete understanding of what each is doing, you
can easily create serious estate planning and tax problems for yourself
because each adviser is unaware of what the others are doing.
One good adviser can help you develop an investment plan tailored
to help you meet your goals. That professional can then coordinate
the activities of your attorney,CPA,insurance professional and oth-
er financial professionals to ensure they are all working in harmony
for your benefit.
Find a well-qualified,trustworthy financial adviser—a person with
the knowledge and skills to guide you through the economy’s ups
and downs, the caring to gently but firmly coach you toward your
goals, and the desire to build a long-term relationship with you.

Each month, Mueller Living will highlight
one family in the neighborhood. This month,
we are pleased to introduce the Herrin family:
Hilary, Brandon, Evan, 8, Lyla, 5, and of course,
their adorable dog, Cricket.
Moving to Mueller in 2008, the Herrins have been a part
of the Mueller community from the beginning. Hilary grew up
in the political hub of Washington, DC.“It was a very fun and
fast-paced environment,”she says, but in seeking the benefits of a
large city - yet with the intimacy of a small town - Hilary decided
to make the move to Austin and attend the University of Texas.
Along the way she met Brandon, who hails from Ann Arbor,
MI and attended the University of Michigan. Like Hilary, he is
enthusiastic about the warm, friendly and active lifestyle Austin
has to offer. More often than not, the Herrins can be found at
their beautiful home just off the park on Camacho Street.
Brandon is a product manager with Civitas Learning and Hil-
ary is well-known to the Mueller community as one of its most
trusted Realtors. Hilary and her team, collectively known as
Mueller Silent Market, help families buy and sell real estate in
the neighborhood. Hilary has been highly involved, not only
with buyers and sellers, but builders and developers as well. By
communicating wants, needs and opinions from the folks who
actually live in the neighborhood to those who are doing the
planning and developing, she has become an invaluable advocate
for Mueller by creating a bridge between the developers and
residents in an effort to enhance our community.
That sense of community is just one of the many reasons the
Herrins love Mueller. There is something for everyone here.
Hilary shared an example from the neighborhood Facebook
page. A fellow Mueller resident posted a note about wanting
to read a particular author, and was curious if anyone else was
interested in the same. Within a couple hours, at least 20 peo-
ple responded with interest, out of which a connection among
like-minded neighbors was born. Hilary also shared the story of
a workout group she belongs to, created by a group of neighbor-
hood friends. They meet three times a week and help keep each
other stay involved and motivated. “Being held accountable by
your neighbors is extremely effective,” laughs Hilary. “Thanks to
them, I’m finally getting into shape!”
Another aspect of Mueller the Herrins love is the ever-increas-
ing walkability. A lot of commercial development has come to
meet your

find themselves having to leave the neighborhood less and less,
with an increasing amount of dining, retail and entertainment
options within walking distance. The vision the Mueller devel-
opment set out to achieve is finally coming together, and the
Herrins couldn’t be happier.
When not working, the Herrins love traveling, exercising and
photography. They are also avid skiers, both snow and water. Evan
and Lyla are involved in soccer and gymnastics. The family enjoys
spending time at Lake Park in Mueller and frequenting local res-
taurants in the community. Some favorites are Torchy’s,Contigo,
and they are especially excited about the upcoming opening of
L’oca D’oro. In line with their love of community, the Herrins also
enjoy a weekly potluck with neighbors here in Mueller.
The Herrins are big supporters of Foundation Communities, a
non-profit organization that provides affordable housing to low-
income Austin residents.Their model also focuses on empowering
residents to achieve educational success, financial stability and a
healthy lifestyle. Not only do they contribute to the organization
financially, but they are active volunteers during the foundation’s
annual holiday drives.“It is a multifaceted program, so there are
many different ways to get involved,”says Hilary.“From tutoring
to financial coaching to putting together welcome home baskets,
there is a volunteer opportunity for everyone.”

It’s hard to believe that spring 2016 is right around the cor-
ner but believe it or not, it is already time to sign up your
kids for spring break and summer camps!
You, as a parent, have a lot of choice when it comes to pick-
ing a camp. You probably want to make sure you’re picking
the right fit for your child - an experience where they can
grow and learn as an individual, spark their curiosity and
make life long connections.
As a Thinkery employee, I may be biased, but I truly believe
Thinkery camps are the best place to have those experi-
ences. Thinkery continues to build the programs to ensure
that campers are getting the most out of each STEAM (sci-
ence, technology, engineering, art and math) focused activity.
Thinkery’s mission is to inspire the next generation of cre-
ative problem solvers through the experiences they provide.
It inspires me each year to see that mission realized through
the camp programs.
Thinkery camps serve children from Pre-K to 5th grade and
provide a variety of age focused challenges that encourage
campers to work together, learn from each other and find

solutions in a fun and entertaining way. This year’s camp
themes include: Animal Adaptations, Once Upon a Design,
Fantastic Human Machine, Robo-lympics, Robot Search &
Rescue and more!
There are so many different activities in each camp, ranging
from engineering water dams to harness hydro-electricity,
teaming up to build robots and refining them to outpace the
competition, designing structures and tools to help fairy tale
characters escape danger and so much more.
In addition to the amazing camp themes and activities,
campers also get to go explore the entire museum, play in
Mueller Lake Park and explore different areas of Austin on
field trips. As a neighbor, I love that you don’t have to worry
about fighting traffic while picking and dropping off your
child - they’re learning, creating, and making friends all
while staying close to home.
Registration is now open for all camps and they’re book-
ing up fast. We hope to meet your kid at camp this year. For

Meet Dr. Lamia Kadir, M.D.
Family Medicine Austin, M.D. PA and Ideal MedicineWeight Loss, LLC
I Found My Calling
Dr. Lamia Kadir is a Board Certified Family Physician and has
been in practice for a decade. In April 2014, she and her stellar
medical assistant, Casey Hernandez, opened the doors to her
new office off 290 East, just 2 miles from the Mueller community.
I asked her why she chose Family Medicine.
I believe that family medicine is the best platform for deliv-
ering primary care. People live in families and communities,
and rarely do illnesses affect only one person. Building trust
by treating the entire family, offering anticipatory guidance
to family members when they come as patients as well as
caregivers, and better understanding the dynamics at home
through multiple visits are powerful assets when delivering
primary care as a family physician.
As much as I love the bread and butter of primary practice, I
also enjoy the challenges of providing comprehensive care to
all my patients. The vitality of one’s practice is often propor-
tional to the breadth of one’s practice. I’ve found that going
above and beyond routine care builds trust and allows many
of my patients to get most of their care in one place.
What other services do you offer?

ignore the epidemic of obesity in our country. More than
one-third of American adults are considered to be obese.
Unfortunately, obesity increases the risk of coronary heart
disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and many other life
threatening conditions.
What are your thoughts of improving our health care system?
As we all know, the health care system in this country is
broken, especially, when it comes to the coordination of care.
Personally, I believe the broad clinical training one receives
in family medicine, as well as the strong new emphasis many
family medicine residencies are placing on team-based care,
uniquely positions family doctors to help lead the revolution
that is stealthily underway in primary care.
What do you do in your free time?
What free time? I am married, have three wonderful children
and my entire immediate family in town. Thank heavens that
my husband is very supportive, allowing me to take on addi-
tional responsibilities as the Medical Director of a free clinic
founded by EIXSYS Heath Systems. In settings of poverty,
the broad tool set that family medicine provides – the abil-
ity to take care of children, pregnant women and sick adults
confidently – is invaluable.

Meet Miss Daisy Jayne Lund. Daisy is a female, blue merle,
Australian Shepherd from Horse Creek Australian Shepherds
of Cordell, OK. She will be 2 years old in April, 2016. Her crys-
tal blue eyes are why the American Indians call the breed “the
ghost eyed dogs.” Daisy’s eye patch is like the center of a Daisy,
hence her name. Her cousin dogs are Petunia and Lilly. Daisy is
a perfect fit for her cheerful spirit.
Daisy is very true to her high energy breed and loves to run
and play. She can cut corners like a pro and can leap to great
heights, like up on to the kitchen counter. Her favorite toys are
paint mixing buckets. She also loves to snuggle and be cuddled
during her relaxed moods.
She is a lover of all people and all animals. The high point of
her day is socializing, especially with the seniors at Wildflower
Terrace. At a party, she will work the event to make sure she has
greeted and hung out with every person there. She has turned
many people that are not too enamored with dogs in to dog
lovers, or at least Daisy lovers.
Daisy has completed training at All Dogs Unleashed and is
always receiving compliments on her obedience skills. The breed
is ranked high for intellect. Daisy did very well in her training.
She will sit at the curb, comes when called, pays attention to her
mommy and is learning a cute dance using her commands. She
loves to learn and thrives on trying new things.
With their long bodies and bobbed tails, Australian Shepherds
are known for how they shake their behinds when they walk,“the
Aussie wiggle.”You should see Daisy strut her stuff; it is adorable.
Daisy brings pure joy to her mommy and everyone she encoun-
ters. She is a blessing.
