Prairie WildflowersStory by Carolyn Hagler, Mueller Resident
When was the last time you actually stopped to smell the flow-
ers? Really. How long has it been? If your answer is more than
a week, then you are missing out on one of the most aromatic and
visual pleasures of Mueller.
The Ladybird Johnson Wildflower Center, along with the Muel-
ler Friends of the Prairie, have been working for years to create
and maintain our spectacular Southwest Greenway and all of
the beautiful flowers and plants living within this prairie. The
Southwest Greenway was originally prepared using soil which
was saved during the development of the initial infrastructure of
Mueller. The soil in this area is considered the “seed bank” and
many of the species we see have appeared from this valuable soil.
Blackland Prairies were historically the largest ecosystem in the
United States but now they are one of the nation’s most endan-
gered habitats.
Spring is the most prolific time for the wildflowers with pedals
ranging in hues from the brightest white to the deepest purple.
In all, there are nineteen species of native wildflowers planted
throughout the Southwest Greenway. Here are some of the flow-
ers you may (or may not have) been missing out on:
Janelle Dozier, a key member of the Friends of the Mueller
Prairie, helps organize workdays for this group of residents and
neighbors to remove invasive species from the Southwest Green-
way and to improve the biodiversity of the prairie. If you would
like to volunteer time to help maintain the beauty and heritage of
this greenway, please contact Janelle through MuellerAustinOn-
line.com (Friends of the Prairie tab) for more information.
If you don’t have a green thumb, you are not alone. However, you
can still admire the labors of others by taking a minute on
your evening stroll to breathe in the wonderful bouquet
of our Texas wildflowers. Make it a daily thing.
Carolyn Hagler is a Mueller “pioneer” along with
her husband and three sons. She is also a full-time
Realtor(R) in Mueller and a cellist with the Austin Sym-
phony Orchestra.

Brian Brown, Certified Personal Trainer
When you think of a robot or a computer they are rigid in
their capabilities, without a whole lot of flexibility. Give
them a program, facts, tasks and they will go to work on
that task until they accomplish it. It would be nice if we
could have the same intense focus with our health and
fitness but we are humans and need to be flexible in our
ever-changing world.
“Health” and “fitness” are nice words that get thrown around
everywhere. Who doesn’t want to be healthy and fit? Everyone
does! The tough part can be implementing the steps to reach
those goals. There is a lot of work and dedication that go into
making those words a reality in our lives. But that can be said for
almost anything in life, so it ultimately comes down to how bad
do you want it? While it requires true dedication, with the right
tools it can be simpler than most people expect.
So what does it mean to be a human robot? Well, when people think
of their health and fitness they must be rigid like a robot in mindset,
unwilling to compromise the value they place on themselves. That
does not mean not making mistakes, ignoring the need to continu-
ally learn, or failing to adapt to fit a complex life. Plainly put, if the
plan is to complete three workouts in a week, eat a serving of fruits
and veggies every day, give up one bad habit every week in increas-
ing time intervals until it is out of our lives completely…then we
need to be rigid in that plan, even if the manner in which this plan is
executed may change. If working out in the morning is your thing
but there was an early meeting, sick child, or any of the other million
possible road blocks that could arise then you must adapt. Work out
that evening, go running on a previously planned day off, with the
understanding that although circumstances may have changed the
bigger task must stay on course. Taking these three life choices on
will make you happier, healthier, and fitter day by day.
1. Finding a workout program that will challenge you, inspire
you and make you feel alive is absolutely integral to sticking
with it. An environment or group that includes a social as-
pect tends to work best at staying accountable. Acountabud-
dies are your lifeline.
2. Include a serving of both fresh fruits, and veggies (Personally it’s
easiest to do so in my smoothies every morning) in life every day.
3. Finally, pick one day this week you will give up something you
know you will be better off without. My personal favorite to
suggest is dairy but there is always more than one option. The
first week you give one day. The second week you give it up two
days. After seven weeks you will have gone without it for the
entire week. Then you can pick a second item/habit and start
over. Small improvements consistently over time equal amaz-
ing changes. Combine these three criteria to your program no
matter where you find yourself on the fitness spectrum and you
will definitely see amazing results. There is no such thing as the
perfect person, as there is no such thing as a step too small.

meet your neighbors
Rivera!
Each month, Mueller Living will highlight one family in the
community. This month, we are pleased to introduce the Maria
Rivera and Smooch. Maria is Realtor and Resident of Mueller.
As an avid reader and a longtime lover of poetry, these words
by Emily Dickinson made me catch my breath the first time I
came across them: I dwell in possibility. Years later, they seemed
appropriate for my business tagline when I took a major career
leap not too long ago. Seeing possibility, taking creative risks, and
collecting experiences, are things I live for. And buying a home in
Mueller in 2011 involved all of these.
Little did I guess, when I moved to Austin in 1995, I would live
here for 18 years and counting…with a three-year NYC stint
sandwiched in. I’m Puerto Rican (I was born there, and both of
my parents are from there), but I grew up mainly in a small town
in Alabama called Ozark. One could say that I’m one of the few
AlabamaRicans out there.
After attending the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa for my
Bachelor’s degree, I interned at the John F. Kennedy for the Per-
forming Arts, which paved the way for my first full-time job out
of college as the Marketing Assistant at the Austin Lyric Opera.
From there, I attended graduate school at the University of Texas,
becoming an advertising copywriter and subsequently working in
several creative New York City ad agencies.
New York taught me how much I love the energy of a bustling,
cosmopolitan, diverse city. But it also taught me how very much
I crave nature and warm weather. Living just ten minutes by foot
from Central Park was a lifesaver. But the occasional April snow-
fall there made me long to return to Austin.
One of the things that attracted me to Mueller was the diversity
of experiences and backgrounds in the people I met who lived
here. So many Mueller residents seemed to have similar trajecto-
ries in terms of having lived in more distant places, later looking
to return to a calm, friendly area with the walkability and green
spaces of a place like Mueller.
I purchased my first home in 2005 on Cloverleaf Dr. just a quar-
ter of a mile north of Mueller. Six years later, I sold it in order to
buy my place in the Mueller neighborhood. My first house was
built in 1955, so it was quite a change to move to my brand new
Mueller property. I remember everyone on my street moving
into his and her home at the same time. And what a unique
experience that was to feel everyone’s excitement to a simi-
lar degree. We were all new and so eager to be living in this
rather unique community.
After freelancing as an advertising copywriter under the name
The Little Red Writing Shop upon returning to Austin, I taught
full-time at the University of Texas at Austin for eight years in
the Department of Advertising within a program called the Texas
Creative sequence. This competitive, portfolio-building program
for graduate and undergraduates prepares students to go into the
creative side of advertising.
I loved teaching. I loved lecturing on creativity. It was a life-chang-
ing experience. But at a certain point, it felt necessary to become a
student again, and that’s when I dove into the world of real estate.
It has been hard work building my business, but incredibly
rewarding helping people from all walks of life achieve their goal
of home ownership and/or real estate investing. I still remember
closing day on my first home purchase years ago. My agent had
brought champagne and gifts. She commemorated the event in a
way that provided a great lasting memory. Working hard to pur-
chase two homes on my own has been a dream come true. And
ever since, I’ve wanted to recreate that feeling for others.
Austin is a city that provides us with so much opportunity to
get involved and reinvent ourselves in whatever way we choose.
Over the years here, I have been a long-time member of The Aus-
tin Toastmasters Club as well as Capital City Toastmasters. Ad-
ditionally, I’ve served as a volunteer for the past six years with a
wonderful organization called Truth Be Told. This nonprofit goes
into women’s prisons to help women tell their stories (through
movement, speech, or writing) of the choices they made which
led them to be incarcerated.
My happiness formula these days is easy to describe: early morn-
ing weekend hikes (River Place Nature Trail is my current favorite),
kayaking, travel (Istanbul last year, Alaska with my mom this Sep-
tember), Motown Monday at The Highball, adopting old dogs (meet
Smooch, pictured here). I love reading, writing, connecting, walking
the Boardwalk, spending time with family and friends. Essentially,
seeing wonder in small things and adventure in everything…

We moved to Mueller the summer before Think-
ery first opened and our older daughter could not
wait for the opening day. Thinkery has fostered
our daughters’ curiosities, allowed them to learn
through jumping, climbing, playing with lights,
sounds, switchboards and manipulatives. Liv-
ing in the Mueller neighborhood has allowed us
the opportunity to walk to Thinkery whenever we
want, which is often weekly. The upstairs area
is an ultimate favorite for our two-year-old. She
loves simulating shopping for fresh produce and
preparing the food using the kitchen appliances.
She absolutely loves crawling through the tunnels,
crashing on the mats, bouncing on the balls and lis-
tening to story time. Both our five year-old and two
year-old daughters love the light room and shadow
wall. They both love to form designs with the wax
machine and manipulating 3D models to discover
concepts of aerodynamics.
Our two-year-old has built an especially strong
sense of community at Thinkery. She and our nan-
ny coordinate with other neighborhood peers and
caretakers to meet at the museum to learn, play,
attend story time, and just explore. The volunteers
and staff are consistent and truly enjoy watching
and learning with the children. Our daughter has
most recently bonded with one of the Thinkers,
Debbie, and each look forward to their weekly time
to visit together upstairs by Move Studio. Since
Thinkery has a designated spot with tables and
chairs for eating, my daughter and her friends often
bring their lunch and sit and eat together after their
morning at the museum.
In addition, our older daughter participated in last
summer’s camp, Fantastic Human Machine. It was
amazing to hear the concepts she learned through-
out the day and she could not wait to go back to
learn more. It was a very hands-on approach to
learning about cells, senses, organs, bones and
nerves. My daughter loved crafting her own stetho-
scope to listen to her heart, lungs, and stomach.
She learned so much in that week and would love to
return again this summer.
We cannot say enough positive things about our
family’s experience at Thinkery and can’t wait for
baby boy Miller to join us in the fun!

It was a Tuesday night when my friend and I decided to enjoy
dinner at Gino’s Vino Osteria for the first time. He and I typically
get together to catch up over breakfast or lunch once a month,
as we have for nearly 20 years. Having both lived in New York
City, with my friend hailing from New Jersey, a great Italian meal
always feels reminiscent of time spent in the Northeast for us.
Gino Catenacci, his wife Li Ping, and Chef Luis Reyes, along with
our gracious and attentive servers, created a memorable experi-
ence for us that went beyond the norm of the usual Austin fare.
Gino has succeeded in his goal of “bringing back the old-fash-
ioned, Rat Pack-style restaurant” where the owner is on the floor,
the chef talks to guests, the entertainment is enjoyable, but non-
intrusive, and the service leaves nothing to be desired.
With nearly 75 years of combined experience in the restau-
rant industry, Gino and Chef Luis take pride in the fresh, local
ingredients they use, their original and inventive food and drink
creations, and the welcoming atmosphere which is noted imme-
diately upon entering the restaurant as Li Ping or Gino himself is
there to greet guests at the door.
Careful attention is paid to the honest ingredients that go into
making the handmade pasta at Gino’s. The Homestead Gristmill
in Waco provides the semolina used for the pasta. Chef Luis and
Gino highlight the Tagliatele Bolognese, the Bisteca alla Pizzaiola,
and the Veal Marsala as menu items not to miss on their exten-
sive list of meat, pasta, and seafood dishes.
Recognized in the Dallas Morning News for his creative cock-
tails, Gino points out his full liquor bar, 100-wine wine list, and
their original Pineapple Tequila, Rock n Rye Bourbon, and Spar-
kling Ginger Mint Martini, among other creations.
I’ll have to return on a Thursday, Friday, or Saturday night for
the live entertainment that spans a range of genres from Jimmy
Buffett to Tony Bennett. And there’s even a Marilyn Monroe
impersonator!
Gino and Chef Luis have created a unique Italian fine dining expe-
rience with a signature style best communicated in the personal
interaction that he provides for each guest: “Nobody gets out of
here without a greeting or a goodbye.”
Visit Gino’s Vino Osteria at:
1200 Barbara Jordan Boulevard Suite 4 LO1 C
Austin, TX 78723
Located in the Northeast corner of the Residence Inn Marriott,
on the corner of Lancaster and 51st Street. Turn into the second
driveway east of I-35. Plenty of parking right in front!

precious pets
Meet Willoughby Beekley!By Taja Beekley, Mueller Resident
Family member name: Taja Beekley
Pet’s name: Sir John “Willoughby” Beekley
Type of animal/breed: Miniature Schnauzer
Male or female: Male
Pet’s age: One year and two months – Birthdate is January 5, 2015
Where/why did you get your pet? I previously fostered a
mini-Schnauzer and immediately fell in love with the breed.
They’re very smart, active and sociable dogs plus hypoallergenic/
non-shedding. When my foster dog went to her forever home, I
knew that I needed a mini-Schnauzer of my own. I searched exten-
sively for a responsible/reputable breeder and found a wonderful
family living on a ranch outside of Houston.
Is there a story behind its name? Willoughby is named after
the handsome philanderer Sir John Willoughby in Jane Austen’s
novel Sense and Sensibility.
Anything special or unusual about them (talents/
quirks)? Willoughby attended puppy obedience school at
Austin’s Zoom Room. He now frequents Austin Pup Culture for
doggie day care.
What do you like best about your pet? Willoughby is well-
known for his loving personality and especially adores children.
When we go for a walk, he wants to greet everyone. Since getting
Willoughby, we have also met several other mini-Schnauzers in
the neighborhood.
Any funny stories? Willoughby’s best friend is a standard
chocolate/gray poodle named Duncan that lives in Mueller. It’s
really fun to watch them play together - they run around like best
buds. Duncan is more responsible though and tries to keep Wil-
loughby from getting into trouble.
How spoiled is your pet? As my only pet, Willoughby is pretty
spoiled. I am learning how to make his food (grain free) at home,
versus buying dry or canned food from the store.
What else should we know about your pet and/or how
your pet has enriched your home/family? I spend more
time walking around Mueller and meeting neighbors because of
Willoughby. He is well-known on my block and at his favorite
hang-out, Ella Wooten Park.

ToBack Investing Basics
Mark Itnyre, CFP®
This ancient Chinese expression may not be too far off the mark
to describe investors’ journey the past few years. A recession fol-
lowed by a slow recovery, record-low interest rates, and some-
times skittish markets have left many wondering about the future.
Adding to a sense of uneasiness these days is wall-to-wall finan-
cial news coverage, featuring a wide range commentaries and
opinions that are often conflicting and confusing.
You can get so much information that you get caught up in un-
necessary drama and lose sight of investing basics. It is precisely
those basics, however, that can help you stay focused and avoid
common investing missteps, no matter what the economy or
markets are doing.
Understand yourself as an investor and create a strategy.
Your goals, risk tolerance, age, circumstances, and more influ-
ence every financial decision you’ll make. By going through a
reasoned thought process to create a rational investing strategy,
you’re better able to determine the appropriate mix of invest-
ments for you. Without that, you can get caught up in confusing
information and stray from your objectives.
Diversify your investments to help manage risk. You can’t
depend on one investment—or even one kind of investment—to
see you through the good and bad times, as much as you might
believe in it. Spreading your money among different types of
investments appropriate for you helps protect your portfolio
during market volatility.
Keep emotions out of your investing decisions. Can you
stay strong when the bottom falls out of the market or when it sky-
rockets to new highs? In times of stress, it’s easy to make a hasty
mistake when we fear losing money or missing out
on an opportunity.
Instead, stay calm, strong and focused on the investment strate-
gies you’ve thoughtfully established—tweaking them, if neces-
sary—and stay on course, particularly during times of extreme
market volatility.
Seek professional guidance. Even sophisticated investors
need reassurance to get through the rough times. A trusted,
knowledgeable wealth advisor can help you find your way when
turbulent times arrive by cutting through the clutter of confus-
ing information and coaching you through the ‘interesting times’
toward your goals.

  • 6. Mueller Living • May 2016 May 2016 • Mueller Living10 11 Prairie WildflowersStory by Carolyn Hagler, Mueller Resident When was the last time you actually stopped to smell the flow- ers? Really. How long has it been? If your answer is more than a week, then you are missing out on one of the most aromatic and visual pleasures of Mueller. The Ladybird Johnson Wildflower Center, along with the Muel- ler Friends of the Prairie, have been working for years to create and maintain our spectacular Southwest Greenway and all of the beautiful flowers and plants living within this prairie. The Southwest Greenway was originally prepared using soil which was saved during the development of the initial infrastructure of Mueller. The soil in this area is considered the “seed bank” and many of the species we see have appeared from this valuable soil. Blackland Prairies were historically the largest ecosystem in the United States but now they are one of the nation’s most endan- gered habitats. Spring is the most prolific time for the wildflowers with pedals ranging in hues from the brightest white to the deepest purple. In all, there are nineteen species of native wildflowers planted throughout the Southwest Greenway. Here are some of the flow- ers you may (or may not have) been missing out on: Janelle Dozier, a key member of the Friends of the Mueller Prairie, helps organize workdays for this group of residents and neighbors to remove invasive species from the Southwest Green- way and to improve the biodiversity of the prairie. If you would like to volunteer time to help maintain the beauty and heritage of this greenway, please contact Janelle through MuellerAustinOn- line.com (Friends of the Prairie tab) for more information. If you don’t have a green thumb, you are not alone. However, you can still admire the labors of others by taking a minute on your evening stroll to breathe in the wonderful bouquet of our Texas wildflowers. Make it a daily thing. Carolyn Hagler is a Mueller “pioneer” along with her husband and three sons. She is also a full-time Realtor(R) in Mueller and a cellist with the Austin Sym- phony Orchestra. Email us at muellerliving@gmail.com. healthy living a Brian Brown, Certified Personal Trainer When you think of a robot or a computer they are rigid in their capabilities, without a whole lot of flexibility. Give them a program, facts, tasks and they will go to work on that task until they accomplish it. It would be nice if we could have the same intense focus with our health and fitness but we are humans and need to be flexible in our ever-changing world. “Health” and “fitness” are nice words that get thrown around everywhere. Who doesn’t want to be healthy and fit? Everyone does! The tough part can be implementing the steps to reach those goals. There is a lot of work and dedication that go into making those words a reality in our lives. But that can be said for almost anything in life, so it ultimately comes down to how bad do you want it? While it requires true dedication, with the right tools it can be simpler than most people expect. So what does it mean to be a human robot? Well, when people think of their health and fitness they must be rigid like a robot in mindset, unwilling to compromise the value they place on themselves. That does not mean not making mistakes, ignoring the need to continu- ally learn, or failing to adapt to fit a complex life. Plainly put, if the plan is to complete three workouts in a week, eat a serving of fruits and veggies every day, give up one bad habit every week in increas- ing time intervals until it is out of our lives completely…then we need to be rigid in that plan, even if the manner in which this plan is executed may change. If working out in the morning is your thing but there was an early meeting, sick child, or any of the other million possible road blocks that could arise then you must adapt. Work out that evening, go running on a previously planned day off, with the understanding that although circumstances may have changed the bigger task must stay on course. Taking these three life choices on will make you happier, healthier, and fitter day by day. 1. Finding a workout program that will challenge you, inspire you and make you feel alive is absolutely integral to sticking with it. An environment or group that includes a social as- pect tends to work best at staying accountable. Acountabud- dies are your lifeline. 2. Include a serving of both fresh fruits, and veggies (Personally it’s easiest to do so in my smoothies every morning) in life every day. 3. Finally, pick one day this week you will give up something you know you will be better off without. My personal favorite to suggest is dairy but there is always more than one option. The first week you give one day. The second week you give it up two days. After seven weeks you will have gone without it for the entire week. Then you can pick a second item/habit and start over. Small improvements consistently over time equal amaz- ing changes. Combine these three criteria to your program no matter where you find yourself on the fitness spectrum and you will definitely see amazing results. There is no such thing as the perfect person, as there is no such thing as a step too small. Brian Brown is a Certified Personal Trainer and Mueller Resident. BeHuman Robot

Each month, Mueller Living will highlight one family in the community. This month, we are pleased to introduce the Maria Rivera and Smooch. Maria is Realtor and Resident of Mueller. As an avid reader and a longtime lover of poetry, these words by Emily Dickinson made me catch my breath the first time I came across them: I dwell in possibility. Years later, they seemed appropriate for my business tagline when I took a major career leap not too long ago. Seeing possibility, taking creative risks, and collecting experiences, are things I live for. And buying a home in Mueller in 2011 involved all of these. Little did I guess, when I moved to Austin in 1995, I would live here for 18 years and counting…with a three-year NYC stint sandwiched in. I’m Puerto Rican (I was born there, and both of my parents are from there), but I grew up mainly in a small town in Alabama called Ozark. One could say that I’m one of the few AlabamaRicans out there. After attending the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa for my Bachelor’s degree, I interned at the John F. Kennedy for the Per- forming Arts, which paved the way for my first full-time job out of college as the Marketing Assistant at the Austin Lyric Opera. From there, I attended graduate school at the University of Texas, becoming an advertising copywriter and subsequently working in several creative New York City ad agencies. New York taught me how much I love the energy of a bustling, cosmopolitan, diverse city. But it also taught me how very much I crave nature and warm weather. Living just ten minutes by foot from Central Park was a lifesaver. But the occasional April snow- fall there made me long to return to Austin. One of the things that attracted me to Mueller was the diversity of experiences and backgrounds in the people I met who lived here. So many Mueller residents seemed to have similar trajecto- ries in terms of having lived in more distant places, later looking to return to a calm, friendly area with the walkability and green spaces of a place like Mueller. I purchased my first home in 2005 on Cloverleaf Dr. just a quar- ter of a mile north of Mueller. Six years later, I sold it in order to buy my place in the Mueller neighborhood. My first house was built in 1955, so it was quite a change to move to my brand new Mueller property. I remember everyone on my street moving into his and her home at the same time. And what a unique experience that was to feel everyone’s excitement to a simi- lar degree. We were all new and so eager to be living in this rather unique community. After freelancing as an advertising copywriter under the name The Little Red Writing Shop upon returning to Austin, I taught full-time at the University of Texas at Austin for eight years in the Department of Advertising within a program called the Texas Creative sequence. This competitive, portfolio-building program for graduate and undergraduates prepares students to go into the creative side of advertising. I loved teaching. I loved lecturing on creativity. It was a life-chang- ing experience. But at a certain point, it felt necessary to become a student again, and that’s when I dove into the world of real estate. It has been hard work building my business, but incredibly rewarding helping people from all walks of life achieve their goal of home ownership and/or real estate investing. I still remember closing day on my first home purchase years ago. My agent had brought champagne and gifts. She commemorated the event in a way that provided a great lasting memory. Working hard to pur- chase two homes on my own has been a dream come true. And ever since, I’ve wanted to recreate that feeling for others. Austin is a city that provides us with so much opportunity to get involved and reinvent ourselves in whatever way we choose. Over the years here, I have been a long-time member of The Aus- tin Toastmasters Club as well as Capital City Toastmasters. Ad- ditionally, I’ve served as a volunteer for the past six years with a wonderful organization called Truth Be Told. This nonprofit goes into women’s prisons to help women tell their stories (through movement, speech, or writing) of the choices they made which led them to be incarcerated. My happiness formula these days is easy to describe: early morn- ing weekend hikes (River Place Nature Trail is my current favorite), kayaking, travel (Istanbul last year, Alaska with my mom this Sep- tember), Motown Monday at The Highball, adopting old dogs (meet Smooch, pictured here). I love reading, writing, connecting, walking the Boardwalk, spending time with family and friends. Essentially, seeing wonder in small things and adventure in everything… Photos courtesy of In Your Eyes Photography Introducing Maria Would you like to get to know your neighbors better by having your family featured in the next available issue? Copyright © 2016 The UPS Store, Inc. 6567011216 We moved to Mueller the summer before Think- ery first opened and our older daughter could not wait for the opening day. Thinkery has fostered our daughters’ curiosities, allowed them to learn through jumping, climbing, playing with lights, sounds, switchboards and manipulatives. Liv- ing in the Mueller neighborhood has allowed us the opportunity to walk to Thinkery whenever we want, which is often weekly. The upstairs area is an ultimate favorite for our two-year-old. She loves simulating shopping for fresh produce and preparing the food using the kitchen appliances. She absolutely loves crawling through the tunnels, crashing on the mats, bouncing on the balls and lis- tening to story time. Both our five year-old and two year-old daughters love the light room and shadow wall. They both love to form designs with the wax machine and manipulating 3D models to discover concepts of aerodynamics. Our two-year-old has built an especially strong sense of community at Thinkery. She and our nan- ny coordinate with other neighborhood peers and caretakers to meet at the museum to learn, play, attend story time, and just explore. The volunteers and staff are consistent and truly enjoy watching and learning with the children. Our daughter has most recently bonded with one of the Thinkers, Debbie, and each look forward to their weekly time to visit together upstairs by Move Studio. Since Thinkery has a designated spot with tables and chairs for eating, my daughter and her friends often bring their lunch and sit and eat together after their morning at the museum. In addition, our older daughter participated in last summer’s camp, Fantastic Human Machine. It was amazing to hear the concepts she learned through- out the day and she could not wait to go back to learn more. It was a very hands-on approach to learning about cells, senses, organs, bones and nerves. My daughter loved crafting her own stetho- scope to listen to her heart, lungs, and stomach. She learned so much in that week and would love to return again this summer. We cannot say enough positive things about our family’s experience at Thinkery and can’t wait for baby boy Miller to join us in the fun! • 10. Mueller Living • May 2016 May 2016 • Mueller Living18 19 It was a Tuesday night when my friend and I decided to enjoy dinner at Gino’s Vino Osteria for the first time. He and I typically get together to catch up over breakfast or lunch once a month, as we have for nearly 20 years. Having both lived in New York City, with my friend hailing from New Jersey, a great Italian meal always feels reminiscent of time spent in the Northeast for us. Gino Catenacci, his wife Li Ping, and Chef Luis Reyes, along with our gracious and attentive servers, created a memorable experi- ence for us that went beyond the norm of the usual Austin fare. Gino has succeeded in his goal of “bringing back the old-fash- ioned, Rat Pack-style restaurant” where the owner is on the floor, the chef talks to guests, the entertainment is enjoyable, but non- intrusive, and the service leaves nothing to be desired. With nearly 75 years of combined experience in the restau- rant industry, Gino and Chef Luis take pride in the fresh, local ingredients they use, their original and inventive food and drink creations, and the welcoming atmosphere which is noted imme- diately upon entering the restaurant as Li Ping or Gino himself is there to greet guests at the door. Careful attention is paid to the honest ingredients that go into making the handmade pasta at Gino’s. The Homestead Gristmill in Waco provides the semolina used for the pasta. Chef Luis and Gino highlight the Tagliatele Bolognese, the Bisteca alla Pizzaiola, and the Veal Marsala as menu items not to miss on their exten- sive list of meat, pasta, and seafood dishes. Recognized in the Dallas Morning News for his creative cock- tails, Gino points out his full liquor bar, 100-wine wine list, and their original Pineapple Tequila, Rock n Rye Bourbon, and Spar- kling Ginger Mint Martini, among other creations. I’ll have to return on a Thursday, Friday, or Saturday night for the live entertainment that spans a range of genres from Jimmy Buffett to Tony Bennett. And there’s even a Marilyn Monroe impersonator! Gino and Chef Luis have created a unique Italian fine dining expe- rience with a signature style best communicated in the personal interaction that he provides for each guest: “Nobody gets out of here without a greeting or a goodbye.” Visit Gino’s Vino Osteria at: 1200 Barbara Jordan Boulevard Suite 4 LO1 C Austin, TX 78723 Located in the Northeast corner of the Residence Inn Marriott, on the corner of Lancaster and 51st Street. Mueller Living • May 2016 May 2016 • Mueller Living22 23 precious pets Meet Willoughby Beekley!By Taja Beekley, Mueller Resident Family member name: Taja Beekley Pet’s name: Sir John “Willoughby” Beekley Type of animal/breed: Miniature Schnauzer Male or female: Male Pet’s age: One year and two months – Birthdate is January 5, 2015 Where/why did you get your pet? I previously fostered a mini-Schnauzer and immediately fell in love with the breed. They’re very smart, active and sociable dogs plus hypoallergenic/ non-shedding. When my foster dog went to her forever home, I knew that I needed a mini-Schnauzer of my own. I searched exten- sively for a responsible/reputable breeder and found a wonderful family living on a ranch outside of Houston. Is there a story behind its name? Willoughby is named after the handsome philanderer Sir John Willoughby in Jane Austen’s novel Sense and Sensibility. Anything special or unusual about them (talents/ quirks)? Willoughby attended puppy obedience school at Austin’s Zoom Room. He now frequents Austin Pup Culture for doggie day care. What do you like best about your pet? Willoughby is well- known for his loving personality and especially adores children. When we go for a walk, he wants to greet everyone. Since getting Willoughby, we have also met several other mini-Schnauzers in the neighborhood. Any funny stories? Willoughby’s best friend is a standard chocolate/gray poodle named Duncan that lives in Mueller. It’s really fun to watch them play together - they run around like best buds. Duncan is more responsible though and tries to keep Wil- loughby from getting into trouble. How spoiled is your pet? As my only pet, Willoughby is pretty spoiled. I am learning how to make his food (grain free) at home, versus buying dry or canned food from the store. What else should we know about your pet and/or how your pet has enriched your home/family? I spend more time walking around Mueller and meeting neighbors because of Willoughby. He is well-known on my block and at his favorite hang-out, Ella Wooten Park. *Photos courtesy of Nicole Mlakar-Livingston Each month, one pet will be highlighted in your community mag- azine. A recession fol- lowed by a slow recovery, record-low interest rates, and some- times skittish markets have left many wondering about the future. Adding to a sense of uneasiness these days is wall-to-wall finan- cial news coverage, featuring a wide range commentaries and opinions that are often conflicting and confusing. You can get so much information that you get caught up in un- necessary drama and lose sight of investing basics. It is precisely those basics, however, that can help you stay focused and avoid common investing missteps, no matter what the economy or markets are doing. Understand yourself as an investor and create a strategy. Your goals, risk tolerance, age, circumstances, and more influ- ence every financial decision you’ll make. By going through a reasoned thought process to create a rational investing strategy, you’re better able to determine the appropriate mix of invest- ments for you. Without that, you can get caught up in confusing information and stray from your objectives. Diversify your investments to help manage risk. You can’t depend on one investment—or even one kind of investment—to see you through the good and bad times, as much as you might believe in it. Spreading your money among different types of investments appropriate for you helps protect your portfolio during market volatility. Keep emotions out of your investing decisions. Can you stay strong when the bottom falls out of the market or when it sky- rockets to new highs? In times of stress, it’s easy to make a hasty mistake when we fear losing money or missing out on an opportunity. Instead, stay calm, strong and focused on the investment strate- gies you’ve thoughtfully established—tweaking them, if neces- sary—and stay on course, particularly during times of extreme market volatility. Seek professional guidance. Even sophisticated investors need reassurance to get through the rough times. A trusted, knowledgeable wealth advisor can help you find your way when turbulent times arrive by cutting through the clutter of confus- ing information and coaching you through the ‘interesting times’ toward your goals.
