Planning$and$programs$at$The$Mark$Twain$House$&$Museum$revolve$around$our$Fiscal$Year,$which$ended$January$31,$2014.$I$know$that$many$of$you$are$receiving$numerous$mailings$from$
us,$but$with$the$conclusion$of$our$annual$audit$we$thought$it$would$be$valuable$to$summarize$how$we$ended$Fiscal$Year$2014$and$what$we$accomplished.$$

Our$most$notable$success$was$hiring$Cindy$Lovell,$who$started$as$ExecuPve$Director$in$March$2013.$$Cindy$is$one$of$the$most$knowledgeable$Twainiacs$in$the$country$and$most$recently$
served$as$the$ExecuPve$Director$of$the$Mark$Twain$Boyhood$Home$&$Museum$in$Hannibal,$Missouri.$Much$of$our$success$during$the$past$year$is$due$to$Cindy's$energy$and$experPse.$Cindy's$
report$follows$mine$and$will$outline$her$team’s$acPviPes$and$objecPves$during$our$current$Fiscal$Year.$

On$February$1,$2014$I$took$over$as$President$of$the$Board$from$Greg$Boyko,$who$brought$the$insPtuPon$to$a$new$level$during$his$fourWyear$tenure$as$President.$Greg$is$due$every$accolade$
for$steering$the$Board$and$organizaPon$during$tough$Pmes,$and$for$ensuring$that$we$ended$the$Fiscal$Year$in$excellent$shape.$Expenses$were$within$budget$and$totaled$$2,538,632.!We$were$
successful$in$raising$income$from$many$generous$individual,$corporate,$foundaPon,$and$government$donors,$and$with$Revenue$totaling$$2,592,900$were$able$to$end$the$year$with$a$modest$

Our$Board$of$Trustees$currently$numbers$40$individuals$represenPng$diverse$disciplines,$including$business,$academia,$law,$accounPng,$literature,$public$relaPons,$and$tourism.$We$have$
grown$beyond$Greater$Har_ord$and$have$trustees$from$Fairfield$County;$New$York$State;$Washington,$D.C.;$and$Chicago.$Each$trustee$provides$invaluable$Pme$and$service,$but$special$credit$
needs$to$go$to$Greg$Servodidio$who$provides$triple$duty$as$Vice$President,$Treasurer,$and$Chair$of$the$Finance$Commidee.$

We$presently$have$21$fullWPme$and$48$partWPme$dedicated$staff$members.$$Along$with$Cindy,$we$added$a$new$Director$of$Development,$Tracy$Wu$Fastenberg$and$Development$Assistant,$
Sarah$Hawkes.$David$Cash$joined$the$staff$as$Publicist$and$PublicaPons$Editor,$and$Sean$Orcud,$a$former$guide,$now$manages$Facility$Rentals.$We$also$opened$The$Nook,$an$onWsite$café$
where$visitors$can$enjoy$a$quick$meal,$under$the$auspices$of$the$Museum$Store.$

Individuals$and$groups$touring$The$Mark$Twain$House$conPnue$to$grow.$$Last$year,$we$increased$visitors$by$2,500$to!69,645.!They$arrived$from$50$states$and$72$countries,$and$we$have$an$

with$135$events$last$year,$ranging$from$specialized$evening$tours,$celebrity$performances,$book$launches,$family$events,$and$“Tapping$into$Twain.”$$Several$years$ago,$we$launched$marquee$
events,$which$benefit$the$economies$of$Har_ord$and$throughout$ConnecPcut.$$Last$year,$we$held$the$third$Mark$My$Words$event$in$New$Haven’s$Shubert$Theater:$a$panel$of$disPnguished$
authors$hosted$by$author$(and$MTH&M$trustee)$David$Baldacci.$$We$were$also$pleased$to$feature$one$of$Stephen$King's$infrequent$appearances,$which$filled$the$2,800Wseat$Bushnell$Theater.$$$

First,$we$have$embarked$on$a$threeWyear$plan$to$increase$tourism$at$The$Mark$Twain$House$&$Museum.$Our$goal$is$to$increase$visitaPon$to$the$House$by$25,000$paid$house$
tours$over$the$next$three$years.$Toward$that$end,$we$have$expanded$the$House$tour$to$include$the$Servants’$Area$and$the$ArPst’s$Friends$room$(next$to$the$Billiard$Room).$In$
February$(FYE$15)$we$appointed$Kim$Beal,$a$former$guide,$as$Tourism$Outreach$Coordinator.$The$Mark$Twain$House$&$Museum$is$a$respected$economic$driver$in$
ConnecPcut’s$tourism$industry,$generaPng$millions$of$dollars$for$hotels,$restaurants,$and$stores,$not$to$menPon$tax$dollars.$But$we$can$do$beder.$Na#onal'Geographic$named$
the$Mark$Twain$House$“one$of$the$ten$best$historic$homes$in$the$world,”$and$we$want$to$share$it$with$the$world.$

In$addiPon$to$focusing$on$increased$tours,$our$high$energy$Director$of$CommunicaPons$and$Special$Programs,$Jacques$Lamarre,$has$been$offering$another$stellar$slate$of$
events$and$programs.$We$have$already$enjoyed$talks$by$Garrison$Keillor$and$Dan$Brown,$and$author$Anne$Rice$is$scheduled$for$November$5th
.$Another$new$event$this$year$is$
BECK$&$CALL$–$The$Servants$Tour,$an$interacPve$evening$tour$during$which$actors$portray$the$Clemens$family$servants$and$share$behind$the$scenes$stories.$Jacques$has$also$
launched$the$new$BOOK/MARK$series$featuring$both$established$and$new$authors.$And$be$sure$to$save$these$dates$for$some$of$our$favorite$events:$July$24:$Ice$Cream$Social;$

Another$new$iniPaPve$this$year$is$the$expansion$of$the$Mark$Twain$House’s$role$as$a$writer’s$house.$Julia$Pistell,$Director$of$WriPng$Programs,$has$launched$the$Royal$
Nonesuch$NaPonal$Humor$WriPng$Contest.$The$contest$includes$categories$for$Adults$and$Young$Authors$and$drew$more$than$350$submissions$in$this$inaugural$year.$
Celebrity$judges$include$Roy$Blount,$Jr.,$Colin$McEnroe,$Lucy$Ferris,$Tim$Federle,$and$Jessica$Lawson.$Julia$has$also$expanded$mulPple$wriPng$programs$in$new$and$exciPng$
direcPons$including$the$highly$successful$“WriPng$in$Twain’s$Library”$–$an$exclusive$opportunity$to$curl$up$for$a$few$quiet$hours$in$the$famous$library$and$be$inspired.$
