This document describes a case study of consolidating a client's MS-SQL databases using Always On availability groups. The client had 39 SQL servers across different versions and editions. The project consolidated the 149 databases onto a new 6-node Always On configuration with Windows Server 2012 and SQL Server 2014 Enterprise. This reduced costs through optimized licensing, administration, and hardware while improving high availability, performance, security and manageability. The Always On configuration allows primary databases to accept read/write workloads while secondaries support read-only operations like reporting, backups and maintenance.
