In 2014, 27 out of 390 trucking companies in New Zealand went bankrupt due to increased costs from tighter safety regulations. Each bankrupt company on average owned around 27 trucks. The bankruptcies were caused by cost-related tightening of safety regulatory norms in New Zealand.
Walmart drivers who have worked for the company for over 10 years earn an annual salary between $80,000 to $100,000. Walmart pays drivers 40% more than other companies. The document provides salary information for experienced Walmart truck drivers.
This document summarizes a road trip from Jamshedpur to Delhi taken from June 1-8, 2015. It describes some stops along the way where the drivers rested and ate, including finding shade under a tree to cook mutton curry and eating at a roadside dhaba called Jeet Dhaba that was a popular hangout. It discusses a last meal at a dhaba in Etawah where one driver unexpectedly couldn't get fish curry. It thanks the key drivers who helped shepherd the trip in sections, Ashish Chatterjee for the first six days and Mohan Shukla for the last two days from Benares to Delhi.
The document discusses the importance of driver/pilot welfare and healthcare. It notes that pilots often work in difficult conditions without proper food, rest, or medical care. Their work is tiring and performed under pressure, and lack of welfare leads to fatigue, poor health, and increased risk of accidents. The document advocates for better facilities like clean rest areas and regular medical checkups/clinics for pilots, as their role transporting goods is vital for the country.
1) The document describes a trip taken by Ramesh Kumar and the Dar'Sel'Jamshedpur team to visit Darcl Pilot families in villages across Jharkhand and distribute gifts.
2) At a village called Dapok, located 20km from NH2, the team distributed sarees, sports items, and lollipops to women, children, and elders who had gathered to meet them.
3) The visits meant a great deal to the Darcl Pilot families, providing a personal connection. Interacting with the Darcl officials and receiving gifts was a big event for the remote communities.
This document provides a summary of a multi-day road trip from Jamshedpur to Delhi, with stops along the way to visit villages where drivers for Darcl pilots live. Over 5 days and 1400 km, the trip involved unexpected stops to meet pilots on the highway, visits to rural villages to discuss issues like education, healthcare and economic opportunities. Activities in the villages included meetings under trees, children's games, photos and gifting ceremonies to support the families of Darcl pilots. The document highlights the challenges faced by pilots on long hauls as well as rural issues like lack of schools, toilets and medical facilities.
The Darcl Team visits the family of one of their pilots in Jamshedpur as part of a new family visit initiative. They bring gifts like fruits, biscuits, toys, and sarees. The son introduces them to his pet rabbits without disturbing his sleeping sister. Visiting the pilots' families gives both the families and company representatives a chance to learn about each other. A newly married pilot's family is shy in responding to questions, while their neighbor is surprised that company officers would visit homes. The Darcl Team feels proud after visiting one of their most well-educated pilot's families.
The document summarizes the donation of 50 soft pillows by the KRK Foundation to Darcl long haul truck drivers. The foundation began its "Donate Sleep" drive in 2013 to provide soft pillows to truck drivers, who often suffer from back and neck pain from sleeping in their cabins without proper support. The drive has so far donated over 1,000 pillows to drivers. Their goal is to continue increasing that number significantly in the future to help more drivers get better sleep.
KRK Foundation completes Year 2 and gallops into Year 3 in trying to improve the working and living conditions of long haul drivers and their families living in remote villages of India.
This document describes the rehabilitation of Rajkumar Nai, a long haul truck driver who lost his leg in a highway accident. It details how he was abandoned by his employers at the government hospital and had to pay 140,000 rupees for private treatment. It outlines his current situation - unable to work and support his family - and efforts underway to provide assistance, including donations via money order from individuals in the transport industry.
The SOS phones installed along the Yamuna Expressway to provide emergency assistance are mostly non-functional, as many have been stolen by villagers with little effort by Jaypee Group to replace them. While video cameras monitor vehicles, the control room was found to have blank screens and a technical team was onsite to fix the issue, contradicting claims of 100% uptime. Overall, the lack of properly functioning emergency equipment calls into question how seriously road safety is taken on the expensive tollway.
The author asks the CEO of a transportation company to check an emergency phone box on the side of a highway. The CEO is skeptical but reluctantly checks and finds the box is empty. They later check another box and find it is also not functioning properly. The author has checked emergency boxes in various locations over several years and often finds them empty or not working as intended. This raises concerns about what would happen if a real emergency occurred and highlights the need for better monitoring and maintenance of these safety resources.
The document discusses the importance of truck drivers having personal accident and life insurance. It notes that while fleet vehicles and cargo are insured, the drivers themselves only have minimal third-party coverage. The document advocates for manufacturers and business leaders to ensure that all drivers transporting raw materials or finished goods to and from their facilities have sufficient insurance to protect themselves, as their work is critical but they are often treated poorly and lack self-esteem. Protecting the drivers with insurance recognizes that their lives are as valuable as those in leadership positions.
This document discusses how dressing well and maintaining personal appearance can help truck drivers receive better treatment and have higher self-esteem. It notes that clean shaven or well-groomed drivers are less likely to be taken advantage of by officials and colleagues, who will treat them with more respect. It encourages truck drivers to dress nicely, as there is nothing wrong with looking good.
Vijay Sankeshwar shared 5 points about VRL Logistics. He plans to do an IPO by Q1 of FY2015. After the IPO, New Silk Route will have a diluted equity stake in VRL Logistics. While Leyland trucks are the best, VRL is not exclusively committed to them and has no issues with Tatas. VRL's fleet of 4,000 vehicles has about 25 that are idled, and they have faced little impact from a driver shortage. Sankeshwar stated that transporters, like politicians, lack culture, and that VRL is unique and not a copycat with their fleet of 5,000 trucks.

3. Let’s begin at the beginning. Among these men – gentle or otherwise – who is the LEAST
presentable: the bearded and white-on-white? The light lemon yellow T-shirtwallah? Or the
red-and-blue one? Yes, all look serious and haggard.
4. By the way, did you ask who they are? … What their profession is? Hmmm… Drivers. Waiting
to pick up the cyber warriors working for Cognizant Technologies Solutions (CTS) at any hour
of the day/night . Lucky guys & gals. We are talking about C.W.s, not these drivers.
5. These Drivers are responding to some questions posed by Pradipto Bhattacharya. Who is
Pradipto? Well, PB works for Karmyog, a business enterprise that is specialising in teaching
soft skills to drivers community. What is ‘personal’ and ‘soft skill’? …
6. First question, first: Pradipto is asking them, “Why don’t you dress up well? Like Sharukh
Khan? Like Aamir Khan? Like Salman Khan? “ Neat and clean. Shaven chin or trimmed beard.
Combed hair. Washed and iron clothes. Now, on to second: Well, this is soft skill. How to dress
up? How to talk to customers? Etc.
7. Well, why is Pradipto getting this “personal”? Well, that is his business model. He earns his
bread by educating these ‘aam aadmi”s the basic etiquette. These drivers, like any of their
tribe, are school dropouts and did not ‘polish’ up personality capabilities. But they work for
big cats (MNCs) ferrying cyber warriors or executives (senior or junior) from home to
workplace and back – five days a week mostly. Yes, the elite. Can’t afford to be rude to their
passengers. Customer service, isn’t? Spot on.
8. So, on a working Wednesday in end-March, Pradipto – brought to Kolkota, courtesy KRK
Foundation (trying to improve the working and living conditions of drivers and their families
living in remote villages) – is in full flow outside Cognizant Technology Solutions, Bantala,
Kolkota – teaching these drivers the basic etiquettes. Today’s focus is on personality
devleopment and the first lesson is “look & feel”. Got it?
9. Going back to the original question of who is looking LEAST
presentable, yes, the red-and-blue T-shirt tops that chart.
Yadav, in his late twenties, is father of two kids from
Darbhanga, Bihar and been a driver helping CTS cyber
warriors to reach office or return home safely on a daily
basis. Somehow, looking good is not his priority….
10. The Nukkad Natak @ CTS, Bantala
over, the venue shifted to Sector 5
– another IT hub in Kolkota. Fresh
set of drivers. But the issue
addressed is same: personality
development. Pradipto is at it. All
over again.
11. Fresh batch of “students” play act whatever Pradipto asks them to do. “Shoot me
with your fingers pointed (at me) like a pistol,” he commands. They oblige.
Willingly. And joyfully What’s in store, they don’t know. But they are enjoying
every moment.
All these happening on roadside. No classroom sermons. No boring power point
slides.
Theatrical. Dramatic. Engaging. Interactive. Not a monologue, but dialogue.
Pradipto’s message: We blame others for all faults. But forget we do have our own
share.
12. Lessons in progress. In subtle ways. No blackboard. No chalk pieces.
All on the roadside where their vehicles are parked mile long and their
waiting game is on. When they will be called in to ferry cyber warriors
wherever they have to go.
Meanwhile, Pradipto engages them in a bit of fun: say, blow out
balloons quickly. Winner gets the loudest applause on roadside.
Passing cars stop curiously wanting to know what the hell is happening?
13. After the ‘Blow Out Balloon’ charade, now some serious teaching on road safety. ABC…
What is ABC?
Always Be Careful..
Look closely at the frame. A new character has joined the group: in red-and-blue T-shirt.
We could not recognise him until …
14. Approaching Pradipto, this man asks: “Can you recognise (me)?”
Pradipto can’t.
“You spoke about Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan this
morning. Right?”
Pradipto nods.
“It’s me at CTS, Bantala. … I wanted to look better, as you told. So, I
went to a saloon for a shave and …. Look, I also combed my hair!”
“I told you then, I did not have time for shave and combing. Wrong.
Actually, I found time for these things. I feel better now”.
Amazing experience. This Driver from Darbhanga deserves a full-
throated, “hip, hip, hurray!”
Pradipto orders one. The entire crowd at Sector 5 applauds him.
Thank you, Salman! Thank you, Shah Rukh! Thank you, Aamir!
15. The search for smart looking truck driver continues at IOC COCO outlet, Haldia. The winners
are crowned with ASDC caps amidst thunderous applauses.
16. The youngest driver-in-the-making is called to the stage with a request to blow out a balloon.
Participants egg him on since he is scared. But he does it finally. A senior logistics officer later
asks what is the relevance of balloon in safety issues. As one takes extra care while filling air
into the balloon so that it does not hurt if it bursts accidentally, similar cautious aproach while
driving is necessary. Crowned with an ASDC cap and an succulent orange to bite into by the
senior-most driver, the wannabe driver is in seventh heaven. Mr Logistics Manager, when was
the last time you brought smile to the face of drivers?
