Mo
Willems
Mo Willemswas born in New
Orleans in 1968. He started his career writing
and animating Sesame Street. He worked for
many years in writing and animating for
television including networks like PBS, Nickel-
odeon, and Cartoon Network . He decided to
quit television to stay home with wife and see
his daughter Trixie grow up.
His first book was Don’t Let the Pigeon
Drive the Bus. Since then he has written many
more including four series : the Pigeon books,
Knuffle Bunny, Elephant and Piggie, and Cat
the Cat. His series Elephant and Piggie has
won the Geiser Award multiple times, and he
has also received Caldecott Honors for two of
his books.
His work has extended from books into
other areas of art. Knuffle Bunny was turned
into a musical that ran for 18 months, and the
pigeon now has his own website and app for
smart phones. Currently, he lives in
Massachusetts with wife
and daughter and is
always working on new
characters to inspire more
books. We can certainly
expect more fun and lovable
characters to come from Mo in
the future.
Times says Mo is
the best new talent
to emerge in the 00’s so far!
The pigeon is begging you
drive the bus after the bus
driver left you in charge.
Finally the bus driver comes
back and the pigeon is scared
and runs away. He moves
onto bigger and better
dreams... like driving a
semi-truck.
In the book, the
Pigeon find a hot
dog. He is met by the
duckling. Ducking
asks all about the hot
dog and what it is
like. Finally pigeon
give him half.
All the pigeon wants
to do is stay up late.
He is begging you to
let him, but you’ve
been told not to.
Finally while
begging he falls
asleep.
The pigeon wants a puppy
and has wanted one for a
long time! (in pigeon
terms) He tells all about
how he would take care of
the puppy. Finally he gets
to meet a dog, and he
changes his mind.
This naked mole rat is
quite different from his
friends. He likes to wear
clothes when all of his
friends are naked. We see
how his community
responds to his strange
habit. But really, why not?
Piggie just got a brand
new toy! She can’t wait
to show it to her best
friend, Gerald, but
Gerald is a little too
exited about it and
breaks it. But there’s
little twist to this toy
(or snap). Elephant and Piggie
discover they are in a
book! They are so
excited to make you, the
reader, say words that
they don’t want to stop!
They come up with a
clever plan, so they
won’t have to.Elephant comes to
Piggie with a long, crazy
story about how he
broke his trunk, but it is
not what you would
expect. By the end of
this story, Piggie as one
of her own to share.
Trixie realizes in this story
that she is not the only
little girl with a stuffed
bunny. A case of mistaken
identity awakes the fathers
of two very upset little
girls, but they are there to
save the night!
Cat the Cat meets a lot of
animal friends in this book,
and she loves to tell you who
all of them are. When she runs
into a rather unique creature
she isn’t quite sure how to
respond, but in the end she
has a new friend!
Mo likes us best!
