The document summarizes the openings of 5 films through analyzing shots, camera techniques, and establishing context over the first 2 minutes of each film. Film One uses voiceover and intercutting shots to set up characters and a spy storyline. Film Two crosscuts between phone calls to set up characters. Film Three uses footsteps, close-ups of a badge, and establishing shots to introduce the main character. Film Four uses close-ups and reactions shots during an interrogation. Film Five establishes a character through soccer scenes and introduces important characters through shots of a house and man opening a door at night.
This is a presentation on me and my group's storyboard for our film opening that we will be filming in a few weeks time. In this presentation we have addressed the techniques used and why they are used and how they will affect our target audiences.
2. Film One – Stormbraker – opening 2 minutes Starts off with credits appearing to a slow beat music and diegetic classroom sounds. Followed by a pan shot of the students thinking/working whilst the teacher talks in the background. Credits are still appearing and then fading. Pan shot ends with a focus on the main character, medium shot. Main character reads out a speech to the class, this describes his family and where he lives. Thus setting the scene for the film. Then it cuts to shots of the person he lives with, his uncle, doing his job and then this is followed by the same for the housekeeper. The camera then cuts to an action scene where it shows a motorbike chase, this scene gives away that the uncle is actually a spy. This is happening with the main character still voicing over about his family.
3. Film two – Drillbit Taylor – opening 2 minutes Starts off with a blank screen, credits appearing, with upbeat modern music over the top. This then cuts to a low angled shot of a car and a house at night, the voice over of one character on the phone to another starts here. This then cuts to another low angled shot of a second house at night, to signify the conversation. This is then followed by another blank screen with more credits appearing. Then it shows one character on the phone walking around their room, medium shot. Then it cuts to the second character lying in their bed on the phone to the other. The camera cross cuts between the two characters for the whole of the phone conversation. Then the camera cuts to the father entering the room, low angled shot, shouting. The low angled shot signifies that he has power within the family.
4. Film three – Hot Fuzz – opening 2 minutes Starts off with Police sirens playing in the background to a blank screen. Then it cuts to a long hallway showing the main character walking towards the camera from a distance, the diagetic sounds of footsteps echoing. Credits also appear and fade throughout. This then cuts to a close up characters face as he stops in front of camera, then an extreme close up of his police badge he was holding up. A voice over of the character speaking now starts. Then it cuts to the footsteps of other people, but the camera then focuses on the main characters. Then a low angled shot, and then a side view shot of him. Next is a close up of his police badge on his shoulder, the second close up signifies the importance of it, and then cuts establishing shot of the main character and others in a gym.
5. Film four – Mission Impossible 3 – Opening 2 minutes Starts off with a blank screen with credits appearing, diagetic background sounds of an action scene. This then cuts to a shot of the main character in distress and pain, a voice over of another character explaining what is going on. Then this is followed by a close up of a hand handcuffed to a chair arm and then again it cuts to a close up of a gun being loaded. Another close up of the characters face in distress, a reactions shot to a question is then next. Next a shot of other characters repeating the question, the camera zooms in on the character. This is followed by an over-the-shoulder shot from the main characters point of view, looking at the other man. The camera then cross cuts between the two characters to show their conversation, this includes reaction shots and close ups.
6. Film five – Goal – Opening 2 minutes Starts off with a blank screen with credits appearing and fading. The music in the background sets the scene. This is then followed by a medium shot of a child juggling a football, still with the credits appearing and going, and then it cuts to a close up of the football and then the child’s face. An establishing shot is next of a run down old house with children playing football in front of it. The music is still slow in the background. Then we have more close ups of the football and a low angled shot of the boy who is playing football. Next a tracking shot of a car driving past and then it zooms in on the boy playing football again, tracking shot again of him after he has scored a goal and then celebrates. Credits still appearing and going. Then followed by an extreme close up of the boys mouth as he cheers, Mexican music is in the background and is setting the scene still. Then cuts to a shot of an older man, opening a door at night. There is low key lighting, and a low angled shot suggests that this man is important in the film.
