HISTORICAL
CONTEXT 1946 - 1970
As the Philippines fell into the hands of another foreign country - Japan - Filipino
literature in English was stopped. The country folks resorted to writing in Filipino,
inspired by provincial life.
On June 24, 1946,
the Americans freed the Filipinos
and thus, the rebirth of freedom came. Freedom of speech, often fueled by
nationalism returned and flourished despite obstacles.

Authors on the period of Rebirth of freedom revived
the Philippines literature in Tagalog.
During this period the Author's themes were the
brutality of the Japanese, the poverty of life under the
Japanese government, and the brave guerilla exploits.

Stevan “Estaban” Javellana is a Filipino born
in 1918 in Iloilo, a short writer, and novelist
one of those novels made in this period is
WITHOUT SEEING THE DAWN.
Which is a grim experience of war during
the Japanese occupation.
Kerima Polotan-Tuvera is a Filipino author. She’s a
renowned fictionist, essayist, and journalist, Kerima's
novel THE HAND OF THE ENEMY won the Stonehill
Award for the Filipino novel in English.
The novel Follows the story of Polotan struggling
with marriage, and life’s defeat, influenced by social
and political corruption. Despite The challenges, she
remains committed to preserving women’s lives
through her writing.
AUTHORS AND
THERE WORKS Kerimas short stories
like “The Trap” (1956),
“The Giants” (1959),
“The Tourists” (1960),
etc... won the prize of
Palanca Awards.
Javellana gained
international
recognition as the
author of best
selling war novel.
Luis V. Teodoro Jr.’s short story THE
ADVERSARY won the Philippines Free Press
short story award; in English. In 1969, his
story THE TRAIL OF PROFESSOR REIGO won
second prize in the Palanca Memorial.
Awards for Literature and in 1970, his short
story THE DISTANT CITY won the GRAPHIC
short story award.
Luis was among the first
Filipino historians who
earned renown for
promoting a distinctly
nationalist historiography
In 1958, the PEN Center of the
Philippines which means Poets,
essayists, and novelists was
introduced. National Artist F Sionil Jose
founded it to firm up writers'
commitment to democracy.
