The ed-tech industry is
flourishing as digital
approaches revolutionize the
ways that schools and educational
institutions around the world teach
their students. Hybrid and blended

teaching methods, making learning
more accessible, engaging, and
student-centric. This new wave of
personalized learning is being

Michael quickly realized how much he
loved assisting education companies to
gain a reputation and build momentum,
both nationally and internationally.
He later realized that a paradigm shift
was about to occur as online education
started to take shape, so he began
collaborating with early- and mid-stage
ed-tech companies to grow
internationally by reaching Ministries
of Education, extensive networks of
school operators, education franchises,
and international education publishers.
The COVID-19 pandemic changed
everything. Globally, educational
establishments have transitioned to
diverse remote, hybrid, and blended
learning approaches. Global Expansion

"Academics" vs. "Economies" -
Strategies to Overcome Challenges
In Michael's experience, many ed-tech
entrepreneurs are ex-teachers,
administrators, and educators who are
driven to facilitate the best outcomes
for their students and who possess
valuable insights about how to improve
their learning. Building a product that
satisfies educators' requirements and
students' needs is an essential first step,
but there comes a point where
"economics" and "academics" collide.
Many early and mid-stage
entrepreneurs in the ed-tech space are
more concerned with pedagogy than
revenue. "Simply put," says Michael,
"If you don't secure scalable and
recurring revenue early to fund your
product roadmap or ongoing
operations, even the most effective
classroom tool won't keep your
business afloat." Too many excellent
businesses run out of money before
they can make an impact because they
get entangled in protracted US sales
cycles.
By bringing decades of experience in
the field of education and a well-
established global reputation, GES can
help ed-tech companies overcome this
challenge by explaining to founders
that an international sales strategy can
generate significant scalable revenue
months or even years ahead of a
domestic strategy alone, without
postponing the latter. There is also no
need to develop an entirely new
product or strategy to sell to
international schools. All around the
world, educators and students face the
same fundamental needs and
difficulties.
Michael maintains that the key is to
capitalize on the founders'
strengths—that is, to match a market
need in education with a solution—and
enlist the help of global specialists like

GES to assist the founders in areas
where they lack experience. For
instance, the route taken behind the
scenes to close the deal is crucial to
successful sales with international
schools. New ed-tech solutions won't
take off unless presented in a way the
local market requires, just like
domestic markets. Founders risk losing
time and money if they don't conduct
this kind of due diligence before
releasing a product.
Visionary Leadership Strategies
Michael believes that visionary leaders
in the education sector are those who
can foresee future trends and devise
inventive solutions to address the
industry's problems. As an innovative,
future-focused leader, he has an
instinctive ability to grasp the end goal
of an ed-tech solution and understands
how to tailor it to suit educational
institutions in various geographical
contexts using any number of hybrid or
blended learning models.
In his words, "You need to know how
local schools work and what they

implementation of ed-tech solutions,
GES pilots the technologies before
introducing them to new large school
operators, ministries of education,
education franchises, or publishers
worldwide. To incorporate that
feedback into the platform, they also
inquire about the specific features or
benefits that the staff sees as aiding the
organization to achieve the best
possible student outcomes.
To highlight one specific project, a
global school operator requested
advice from GES about their bilingual
program and suggestions to enhance
students' speaking, writing, and reading
skills. GES suggested utilizing
standalone, AI-based solutions that

delivering these solutions have made it
impossible on a large scale. But today,
the internet and mobile revolution have
significantly decreased the cost of and
expanded access to high-quality
learning opportunities. For example,
Coursera offers free instruction from
top professors worldwide, and
Duolingo allows users to learn any
language on their phone.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, 1.6
billion students switched to remote
learning worldwide. There will be no
turning back now that the emergency
pivot has ended. Hybrid and blended
learning are here to stay. As hybrid and
blended learning become the primary
learning models around the world, the
question is what form this will take and
who will be in the best position to take
the lead and make a transformative
impact.

Vision for the Future
Since the COVID-19 pandemic,
educational institutions have
demonstrated their ability to act
quickly and decisively – and this
agility will continue to be necessary.
Five days after its launch at the end of
November 2022, OpenAI's ChatGPT
registered over a million users and
immediately changed the game. The
most pressing concerns in education
were assessment and academic
integrity.
With the dust now settling, Michael
and his team are beginning to see more
clearly the opportunities and
challenges that generative AI will bring
for education in the medium and long
run. AI offers great promise for
personalization—it can enable different
types of learners to make requests in
ways that best suit their needs, and it
can help educators do their jobs more
efficiently.
One of the main tactics for GES is to
address the professional development
gap for educators, who are often
inexperienced, lack confidence, and
struggle with digital skills. Ed-tech is
changing at an exponential rate, and it
can be hard for busy educators to keep
up.
This challenge is made more difficult
by a global teacher shortage, as 69
million teachers will be needed
globally by 2030, combined with the
challenge of making sure educators
have the time, skills, and confidence to
capitalize on the opportunities made
possible by technology. GES believes
that better self-guided and self-paced
professional development is necessary
for educators to prevent burnout and to
ensure that the massive promise of ed-
tech is fully realized for students.

challenge for Higher-Ed Leaders
Campus buildings consume a consider-
able sum of the energy colleges and
universities use and have some of the
most complex physical environments
in the world. Some of their facilities
are energy intensive. For example,
research labs require proper ventilation
to keep lab workers safe. Many
institutions seek ways to meet safety
requirements while reducing energy
use.
Higher Education facilities and
buildings fill various needs: learning,
discovering, innovating; living,
working, playing, and socializing; and
administrating, including security,
utilities, and transportation. Many
buildings are mixed-use, and there is
infrastructure akin to what is found in
small to large cities. When higher ed

In the Race to Net Zero
The education system thrives on the guidance and
vision of its leaders. These leaders, principals,
headmasters, or superintendents play a crucial role
in shaping the academic environment and the overall well-
being and growth of students, teachers and staff. However,
some leaders go beyond mere management and step into the
realm of inspiration. These inspirational leaders through
their vision, actions, and commitment create a
transformative learning environment that fosters excellence,
innovation, and a lifelong love of learning.
Join in to find out the key strategies employed by
inspirational educational leaders who embody the concept
of transformative leadership!
Transformative leadership, as opposed to transactional
leadership which focuses on exchange and reward, inspires
and motivates individuals to reach their full potential. It
emphasizes shared vision, intellectual stimulation, and
fostering a culture of collaboration and critical thinking. By
understanding these strategies, aspiring and current
educational leaders can cultivate an environment that
empowers students, teachers and the entire school

Transformative Leadership

Building a Shared Vision: Leading with Purpose
The foundation of transformative leadership is a clearly defined,
inspiring vision. This vision goes more than standardized test
scores and encompasses the holistic development of students.
An inspirational leader articulates this vision in a way that
resonates with the entire school community. They paint a
compelling picture of the future they wish to create, a future
where students are engaged, empowered and equipped to face
the challenges of the progressing world.
This vision isn't a top-down directive, but rather a collaborative
effort. Inspirational leaders involve stakeholders—teachers,
parents and students—in shaping and refining the vision. This
fosters a sense of ownership and buy-in, ensuring everyone
feels invested in achieving the common goal. Regularly
revisiting this vision, celebrating progress, and highlighting
success stories further fuel motivation and keep the community
moving forward as a united force.
Fostering Collaboration and Building Trust
Transformative leadership thrives on collaboration.
Inspirational leaders recognize that the collective wisdom and
talents of the school community are far greater than any one
individual's. They empower teachers to share best practices,
work together on curriculum development, and create a culture
of peer learning. This fosters a sense of community and shared
responsibility for student success.
Building trust is equally important. An inspirational leader
creates a safe space for open communication, where teachers
feel comfortable voicing concerns, offering suggestions, and
taking calculated risks. This requires active listening, empathy,
and a willingness to address challenges head-on. By
demonstrating transparency and fairness in decision-making,
inspirational leaders cultivate an environment where everyone
feels valued and respected.
Growth Mindset for All
Lifelong learning is at the heart of transformative leadership.
Inspirational leaders understand that education is a continuous
journey, not a destination. They foster a growth mindset within
the school community, encouraging students, teachers, and staff
to embrace challenges as opportunities for learning and growth.
This translates into providing professional development
opportunities for teachers, encouraging them to explore
innovative teaching methods and stay abreast of the latest
advancements in their field.
Similarly, inspirational leaders create a culture of exploration
and experimentation within the classroom. They empower
students to take ownership of their learning and explore
different ways of acquiring knowledge.
Fueling Motivation
Motivation is a key ingredient for success. Inspirational leaders
understand the power of positive reinforcement and recognize
and celebrate achievements, big and small. This recognition can
be formal, through awards and ceremonies, or informal, through
words of encouragement and personalized feedback. The key is
to acknowledge individual and collective efforts, highlighting
the value each member brings to the team.
Celebrating achievements creates a positive learning
environment where students feel a sense of accomplishment and
a desire to learn more. It also strengthens teacher morale and
encourages them to continue going above and beyond for their
students.
Conclusion
Inspirational educational leaders, through their commitment to
transformative leadership, create a dynamic and empowering
learning environment. By fostering a shared vision, building
trust through collaboration, championing continuous learning,
and recognizing achievements, they inspire students, teachers,
and staff to reach their full potential. The positive impact of
these strategies extends far beyond the classroom, shaping
individuals who are lifelong learners, critical thinkers, and
valuable members of their communities.
The future of transformative leadership in education will likely
involve harnessing technology to personalize learning
experiences and foster global collaboration. Leaders may utilize
data analytics to identify individual student needs and tailor
instruction accordingly. Additionally, virtual exchange
programs and online learning platforms could connect students
across the globe, fostering intercultural understanding and
preparing them for a truly interconnected world.

Back in the United Kingdom, I had a
few great teachers in my youth. After
two years teaching English and English
Literature, I had thought of a career in
art history, but I swerved back into
teaching. Thank goodness! Alongside
hard work, I believe that circumstances
also help you become a leader: it is not
always the case that you can make
yourself one.
You look at others, and you learn. One
such leader I had (nearly 20 years ago

schools that, perhaps, did not pay
sufficient attention to one’s
professional aspirations. But you find
ways to continue learning. If you put
the student first, as you should, then
your education career will likely
blossom, too. Patience is a great virtue
for an educational leader to possess,
too. Challenges found along the road
of life will need time to overcome
them.

professional growth is essential to you.
Thus creating valuable opportunities
for them so that they can happen.
How do you foster innovation and
creativity within your educational

Be open to changes, especially in this
technological age. It also is essential to
hire high-quality staff. Not everyone
will come up with new ideas or be
super creative, but by being well-
trained, all one’s staff can enact the
initiatives one wants to share. And
always for the good of the students. In
creating this school, we have paid
attention to our very environment.
Nature itself has been a good teacher.
Creativity in our architectural designs
has derived from our desire to blend in
with our green surroundings.
Can you highlight a specific project
or initiative you're particularly
proud of in your leadership role?
Yes, creating a whole new school! To
win that ‘war,’ you fight many battles,
some being one after one another, and
occasionally other battles happening
side by side. Some challenges have to
do with the very construction of the
facilities needed; others have to do
with various issues concerning one’s
human capital.
A personal whim, I also want to set up
a museum about the life and death of
Charles Dickens (We have many
original documents and other objects in
our collection). He is admirable in his
pro-child stance; therefore, showcasing
this writer is highly relevant within a
school.

must establish with our students.
Teaching is about a transfer of subject
knowledge and skills, but it goes way
beyond that. We are forming human

stakeholders to enhance learning
opportunities?
We have a Mexico City group of
schools whose head teachers meet. We
arrange that the same then can happen
with our staff. We work with the Anglo
(downtown), an organization that helps
train teachers (the IPGCE) and acts as
a bridge between schools and
Cambridge University’s educational
courses and services. I am a member of
the Latin American Heads Conference
(LAHC). Locally, we work with the
DIF, helping the disadvantaged and the
elderly in our social responsibility
projects.
What changes do you envision for
the educational sector in the coming
years, and how are you preparing
your institution?
I will focus here on one. International
education is being reshaped by large
organizations acquiring schools around
the world. Let’s see where this takes
us. Better put, let’s see what it will do
to meet the many needs of our
students.
How do you address the evolving
needs of students in the 21st century
through your leadership approach?
I have stated that I am a role model for
my staff. Equally, I must be the same
for my students. I will know their
anxieties, needs, hopes, and challenges
if I listen carefully enough (including
further study in their future
universities). Thus, sitting in the chair
that I do, I must keep up with new
ideas that are published and shared. In
turn, we must understand and apply
recent trends that can assist this
institution in better preparing the
students for this constantly developing
world.
particular way to be inclusive will
happen in a few days. On a Saturday,
tapping into that diversity, we are
hosting a large international fair of
food and drink, dance, and music from
around the globe.
What strategies do you employ to
motivate and inspire your team of
educators?
Be a role model, naturally. Never ask
anyone on your team to do something
you are unprepared to do yourself. Be
present and be visible around the
campus. Listen to successes and
possible grievances. Try to be part of
the solution and do so as quickly as
you can.

nce upon a time it seemed the only factor in
university application success was academic
outcomes and grades, this is no longer true, if it
ever really was. The expansion of global travel for
university places means competition is becoming fiercer
and fiercer and with the constant increase in international
schools across the world, today's students must stand out
amongst this ever increasing crowd. So how do students
stand out in this global market with so many high achieving
students? This is now the question so many schools are
being faced with. So what are universities looking at
beyond grades and why? And more importantly, what can
schools learn from this?
It has been accepted for a long time that the way to student
potential is to develop the whole student. To focus purely
on exam outcomes can mean that grades are achieved but at
what cost? Are these students going to be equipped to
continue this success in the very different environment or
tertiary education? This is a concern regardless of whether
the student comes with A Level grades, IB Diploma Points,
SAT or AP scores or from some other academic system.
If these students cannot problem solve, work with others,
and communicate clearly, what real long-term prospects do
they have? The real priority for schools must be to develop
the whole individual so that academic success is possible
alongside the development of life skills that will ensure
success well beyond school life. This is the reason that
good schools embed so many other opportunities within
their curriculum.
Common place now is MUN, International Award or The
Duke of Edinburgh Award, debating clubs, charity groups
and other leadership roles alongside the sporting and arts
opportunities. These activities do not just bolster the
student's application or CV, they provide real opportunities
for learning. Let's take the MUN as an example. The MUN
allows students to actively engage in real life global issues,
it raises awareness.
It requires students to consider a problem from a particular
stance, the stance of the country they are representing,
regardless of whether their personal stance is the same or
quite the opposite. It requires students to share ideas, seek
alliances, debate and discuss points and agree resolutions.
What successful person could not benefit from these skills?
I wonder what my early career might have looked like had I
had that opportunity to develop those key life skills at a
younger age. You could list similar skills that are developed
for the other opportunities available alongside the benefits
and importance of those skills.
So what are the implications for school leaders? Firstly,
what opportunities can you provide for your young learners
within the school environment? How can you balance this
against curriculum needs? My opinion is that leaders need
to be brave and trust that if students are getting genuine
development opportunities, it will make them better
learners but more importantly allow them a better chance at
success longer term.
It will mean that schools are fulfilling their responsibility of
developing the whole individual so they can reach their
potential beyond school and become a globally aware
citizen and contribute to society. It will also boost their
potential offers from universities and make them more
saleable to establishments who are now forced to look
deeper to select their students, from a global cohort. For
those in the community that may be cynical about the
benefits of these opportunities, although I hope there are not
too many, simply refer to the fact that to be offered places in
the top universities students are having to demonstrate
wider development. This justifies the need although I hope
you appreciate that the real need is around student
development, not CV development.
So why are universities looking at more than just grades, is
this just a way to distinguish between individuals? I believe
not. I believe universities understand that a student who has
had opportunities outside the classroom and demonstrated a
desire and passion to be involved will be the type of
learners more likely to cope with the transition to a new
learning model, are more likely to have the skills to succeed
and contribute to their new community, the university.
So, whilst it is easy to adopt the view that clubs and
activities will boost an application merely by their presence,
it is much more likely that the presence of those additional
learning opportunities demonstrate the individual has had
the support and opportunities to develop those key life
skills needed to meet their potential, in school and beyond.

The ed-tech industryis flourishing as digital approaches revolutionize the ways that schools and educational institutions around the world teach their students. Hybrid and blended learning are transforming traditional teaching methods, making learning more accessible, engaging, and student-centric. This new wave of personalized learning is being implemented by inspiring ed-tech companies that aim to empower students to explore subjects at their co-founded a business producing portable word processors and typing tutors for K-8 students; this attracted customers from educational institutions searching for an affordable, effective way to teach writing composition. Michael quickly realized how much he loved assisting education companies to gain a reputation and build momentum, both nationally and internationally. He later realized that a paradigm shift was about to occur as online education started to take shape, so he began collaborating with early- and mid-stage ed-tech companies to grow internationally by reaching Ministries of Education, extensive networks of school operators, education franchises, and international education publishers. The COVID-19 pandemic changed everything. Globally, educational establishments have transitioned to diverse remote, hybrid, and blended learning approaches. Global Expansion Strategies swiftly became the industry leader in helping ed-tech businesses grow internationally. As well as supporting businesses to generate steady, recurring revenue streams, Global Expansion Strategies also help them obtain funding and prepare for profitable exits. "Academics" vs. "Economies"- Strategies to Overcome Challenges In Michael's experience, many ed-tech entrepreneurs are ex-teachers, administrators, and educators who are driven to facilitate the best outcomes for their students and who possess valuable insights about how to improve their learning. Building a product that satisfies educators' requirements and students' needs is an essential first step, but there comes a point where "economics" and "academics" collide. Many early and mid-stage entrepreneurs in the ed-tech space are more concerned with pedagogy than revenue. "Simply put," says Michael, "If you don't secure scalable and recurring revenue early to fund your product roadmap or ongoing operations, even the most effective classroom tool won't keep your business afloat." Too many excellent businesses run out of money before they can make an impact because they get entangled in protracted US sales cycles. By bringing decades of experience in the field of education and a well- established global reputation, GES can help ed-tech companies overcome this challenge by explaining to founders that an international sales strategy can generate significant scalable revenue months or even years ahead of a domestic strategy alone, without postponing the latter. There is also no need to develop an entirely new product or strategy to sell to international schools. All around the world, educators and students face the same fundamental needs and difficulties. Michael maintains that the key is to capitalize on the founders' strengths—that is, to match a market need in education with a solution—and enlist the help of global specialists like Our mission is to help early and mid-stage ed-tech companies expand globally and diversify their revenue streams to enable sustainable growth – in order to maximize transforma ve student outcomes in a post-pandemic era. New ed-tech solutions won't take off unless presented in a way the local market requires, just like domestic markets. Founders risk losing time and money if they don't conduct this kind of due diligence before releasing a product. Visionary Leadership Strategies Michael believes that visionary leaders in the education sector are those who can foresee future trends and devise inventive solutions to address the industry's problems. As an innovative, future-focused leader, he has an instinctive ability to grasp the end goal of an ed-tech solution and understands how to tailor it to suit educational institutions in various geographical contexts using any number of hybrid or blended learning models. In his words, "You need to know how local schools work and what they require to make those schools fully aware of the benefits of your solution." dynamic way. To ensure the smooth implementation of ed-tech solutions, GES pilots the technologies before introducing them to new large school operators, ministries of education, education franchises, or publishers worldwide. To incorporate that feedback into the platform, they also inquire about the specific features or benefits that the staff sees as aiding the organization to achieve the best possible student outcomes. To highlight one specific project, a global school operator requested advice from GES about their bilingual program and suggestions to enhance students' speaking, writing, and reading skills. GES suggested utilizing standalone, AI-based solutions that came packaged within one LMS: one for reading, one for writing, and one for speaking and pronunciation. Middle and high school students across various global regions saw improvements in all three areas in less than a year. Ensuring that the school has appropriate professional development is critical for all stakeholders to implement and manage ed-tech solutions effectively. Embracing Technology inEducation For Michael, "Ed-tech promises to enable transformative learning experiences delivered at radically reduced cost and providing equal access to opportunities." It has been widely known for many years that individualized support, observation, feedback, and high learner accountability have a significant impact on learning outcomes. delivering these solutions have made it impossible on a large scale. But today, the internet and mobile revolution have significantly decreased the cost of and expanded access to high-quality learning opportunities. For example, Coursera offers free instruction from top professors worldwide, and Duolingo allows users to learn any language on their phone. During the COVID-19 pandemic, 1.6 billion students switched to remote learning worldwide. There will be no turning back now that the emergency pivot has ended. Hybrid and blended learning are here to stay. As hybrid and blended learning become the primary learning models around the world, the question is what form this will take and who will be in the best position to take the lead and make a transformative impact. Equality and Inclusivity Among the Teams Michael is a seasoned leader who effectively promotes diversity and inclusivity in the educational community. With a truly global perspective, Global Expansion Strategies assists both men and women founders worldwide, working in areas of education that complement their core business values and pursuing the same core goal of improving student outcomes and promoting fair access to opportunities for everyone. Michael offers educators a range of tools to assist them in configuring blended/hybrid models and modifying them to optimize student outcomes. This is done by fostering a culture of innovation and lifelong learning. He empowers his global team to take responsibility for their roles and become more self-directed, with measurable results for all. Collaboration within the Sector Michael participates as much as possible in the ed-tech community. He is on the board of and advises several global ed-tech startups, and he takes part in important international thought- leadership conferences and Vision for the Future Since the COVID-19 pandemic, educational institutions have demonstrated their ability to act quickly and decisively – and this agility will continue to be necessary. Five days after its launch at the end of November 2022, OpenAI's ChatGPT registered over a million users and immediately changed the game. The most pressing concerns in education were assessment and academic integrity. With the dust now settling, Michael and his team are beginning to see more clearly the opportunities and challenges that generative AI will bring for education in the medium and long run. AI offers great promise for personalization—it can enable different types of learners to make requests in ways that best suit their needs, and it can help educators do their jobs more efficiently. One of the main tactics for GES is to address the professional development gap for educators, who are often inexperienced, lack confidence, and struggle with digital skills. Ed-tech is changing at an exponential rate, and it can be hard for busy educators to keep up. This challenge is made more difficult by a global teacher shortage, as 69 million teachers will be needed globally by 2030, combined with the challenge of making sure educators have the time, skills, and confidence to capitalize on the opportunities made possible by technology. GES believes that better self-guided and self-paced professional development is necessary for educators to prevent burnout and to ensure that the massive promise of ed- tech is fully realized for students. associations to keep his finger on the industry pulse and stay up to date on the newest trends. He regularly publishes case studies and articles about blended and hybrid learning in the post-pandemic era. For today’s generationof college students concerned about climate change, the investment can signal that an institution takes their concerns seriously, making themselves more attractive to many students who believe their schools can do more to reduce their impact on the environ- ment. According to the United Nations, through 2022, more than 1,000 higher education institutions have joined other ‘real economy’ actors in 120 countries in the Race To Zero, the largest ever alliance committed to achieving net- zero carbon emissions by 2050 at the latest. Campuses Set Energy Goals The United Nations also states that in the United States, more than 400 college and university presidents have pledged to achieve net zero or carbon neutrality at their institutions by the year 2050 or sooner. Many colleges and universities want to develop Zero Energy Buildings (ZEBs) that mini- mize energy use and are solar-ready. ZEBs combine energy efficiency and renewable energy generation to consume only the energy that can be produced onsite. • 22.
Building a SharedVision: Leading with Purpose The foundation of transformative leadership is a clearly defined, inspiring vision. This vision goes more than standardized test scores and encompasses the holistic development of students. An inspirational leader articulates this vision in a way that resonates with the entire school community. They paint a compelling picture of the future they wish to create, a future where students are engaged, empowered and equipped to face the challenges of the progressing world. This vision isn't a top-down directive, but rather a collaborative effort. Inspirational leaders involve stakeholders—teachers, parents and students—in shaping and refining the vision. This fosters a sense of ownership and buy-in, ensuring everyone feels invested in achieving the common goal. Regularly revisiting this vision, celebrating progress, and highlighting success stories further fuel motivation and keep the community moving forward as a united force. Fostering Collaboration and Building Trust Transformative leadership thrives on collaboration. Inspirational leaders recognize that the collective wisdom and talents of the school community are far greater than any one individual's. They empower teachers to share best practices, work together on curriculum development, and create a culture of peer learning. This fosters a sense of community and shared responsibility for student success. Building trust is equally important. An inspirational leader creates a safe space for open communication, where teachers feel comfortable voicing concerns, offering suggestions, and taking calculated risks. This requires active listening, empathy, and a willingness to address challenges head-on. By demonstrating transparency and fairness in decision-making, inspirational leaders cultivate an environment where everyone feels valued and respected. Growth Mindset for All Lifelong learning is at the heart of transformative leadership. Inspirational leaders understand that education is a continuous journey, not a destination. They foster a growth mindset within the school community, encouraging students, teachers, and staff to embrace challenges as opportunities for learning and growth. This translates into providing professional development opportunities for teachers, encouraging them to explore innovative teaching methods and stay abreast of the latest advancements in their field. Similarly, inspirational leaders create a culture of exploration and experimentation within the classroom. They empower students to take ownership of their learning and explore different ways of acquiring knowledge. Fueling Motivation Motivation is a key ingredient for success. Inspirational leaders understand the power of positive reinforcement and recognize and celebrate achievements, big and small. This recognition can be formal, through awards and ceremonies, or informal, through words of encouragement and personalized feedback. The key is to acknowledge individual and collective efforts, highlighting the value each member brings to the team. Celebrating achievements creates a positive learning environment where students feel a sense of accomplishment and a desire to learn more. It also strengthens teacher morale and encourages them to continue going above and beyond for their students. Conclusion Inspirational educational leaders, through their commitment to transformative leadership, create a dynamic and empowering learning environment. By fostering a shared vision, building trust through collaboration, championing continuous learning, and recognizing achievements, they inspire students, teachers, and staff to reach their full potential. The positive impact of these strategies extends far beyond the classroom, shaping individuals who are lifelong learners, critical thinkers, and valuable members of their communities. The future of transformative leadership in education will likely involve harnessing technology to personalize learning experiences and foster global collaboration. Leaders may utilize data analytics to identify individual student needs and tailor instruction accordingly. Additionally, virtual exchange programs and online learning platforms could connect students across the globe, fostering intercultural understanding and preparing them for a truly interconnected world. 20 | March 2024

After two years teaching English and English Literature, I had thought of a career in art history, but I swerved back into teaching. Thank goodness! Alongside hard work, I believe that circumstances also help you become a leader: it is not always the case that you can make yourself one. You look at others, and you learn. One such leader I had (nearly 20 years ago now) was David Levin, the Headmaster at City of London School. He ran a great school, allowing teachers the right amount of classroom autonomy. Kindly share the mission and vision of your organization. 24 | March2024 schools that, perhaps, did not pay sufficient attention to one’s professional aspirations. But you find ways to continue learning. If you put the student first, as you should, then your education career will likely blossom, too. Patience is a great virtue for an educational leader to possess, too. Challenges found along the road of life will need time to overcome them. In your opinion, what are the essential qualities that make a leader effective in education? Demonstrate honesty and determination, a genuine desire to educate your students, build effective teams to work, and be a great listener. Let your staff know that their professional growth is essential to you. Thus creating valuable opportunities for them so that they can happen. How do you foster innovation and creativity within your educational institution? Be open to changes, especially in this technological age. It also is essential to hire high-quality staff. Not everyone will come up with new ideas or be super creative, but by being well- trained, all one’s staff can enact the initiatives one wants to share. And always for the good of the students. In creating this school, we have paid attention to our very environment. Nature itself has been a good teacher. Creativity in our architectural designs has derived from our desire to blend in with our green surroundings. Can you highlight a specific project or initiative you're particularly proud of in your leadership role? Yes, creating a whole new school! To win that ‘war,’ you fight many battles, some being one after one another, and occasionally other battles happening side by side. Some challenges have to do with the very construction of the facilities needed; others have to do with various issues concerning one’s human capital. A personal whim, I also want to set up a museum about the life and death of Charles Dickens (We have many original documents and other objects in our collection). He is admirable in his pro-child stance; therefore, showcasing this writer is highly relevant within a school. What role do you believe technology plays in shaping the future of education, and how are you I have stated that I am a role model for my staff. Equally, I must be the same for my students. “ “

www.theknowledgereview.com | 25 incorporatingit into your educational strategies? Technology is here to stay and will not be uninvented. Nor should we wish to. However, it is an adjunct to the professional relationship we teachers must establish with our students. Teaching is about a transfer of subject knowledge and skills, but it goes way beyond that. We are forming human beings (dealing with all their complex emotional needs) and creating new citizens who will change the world. How do you ensure inclusivity and diversity within your educational community? Our community – the families and staff – comprises many nationalities. Celebrate that fact. Speak of it often in the assemblies with students. One How have you collaborated with other educational institutions or stakeholders to enhance learning opportunities? We have a Mexico City group of schools whose head teachers meet. We arrange that the same then can happen with our staff. We work with the Anglo (downtown), an organization that helps train teachers (the IPGCE) and acts as a bridge between schools and Cambridge University’s educational courses and services. I am a member of the Latin American Heads Conference (LAHC). Locally, we work with the DIF, helping the disadvantaged and the elderly in our social responsibility projects. What changes do you envision for the educational sector in the coming years, and how are you preparing your institution? I will focus here on one. International education is being reshaped by large organizations acquiring schools around the world. Let’s see where this takes us. Better put, let’s see what it will do to meet the many needs of our students. How do you address the evolving needs of students in the 21st century through your leadership approach? I have stated that I am a role model for my staff. Equally, I must be the same for my students. I will know their anxieties, needs, hopes, and challenges if I listen carefully enough (including further study in their future universities). Thus, sitting in the chair that I do, I must keep up with new ideas that are published and shared. In turn, we must understand and apply recent trends that can assist this institution in better preparing the students for this constantly developing world. particular way to be inclusive will happen in a few days. On a Saturday, tapping into that diversity, we are hosting a large international fair of food and drink, dance, and music from around the globe. What strategies do you employ to motivate and inspire your team of educators? Be a role model, naturally. Never ask anyone on your team to do something you are unprepared to do yourself. Be present and be visible around the campus. Listen to successes and possible grievances. Try to be part of the solution and do so as quickly as you can.

Chance to their Desired UniversityOffers? How can Students Improve their Steven Shaw 26 | March 2024

O O nce upon atime it seemed the only factor in university application success was academic outcomes and grades, this is no longer true, if it ever really was. The expansion of global travel for university places means competition is becoming fiercer and fiercer and with the constant increase in international schools across the world, today's students must stand out amongst this ever increasing crowd. So how do students stand out in this global market with so many high achieving students? This is now the question so many schools are being faced with. So what are universities looking at beyond grades and why? And more importantly, what can schools learn from this? It has been accepted for a long time that the way to student potential is to develop the whole student. To focus purely on exam outcomes can mean that grades are achieved but at what cost? Are these students going to be equipped to continue this success in the very different environment or tertiary education? This is a concern regardless of whether the student comes with A Level grades, IB Diploma Points, SAT or AP scores or from some other academic system. If these students cannot problem solve, work with others, and communicate clearly, what real long-term prospects do they have? The real priority for schools must be to develop the whole individual so that academic success is possible alongside the development of life skills that will ensure success well beyond school life. This is the reason that good schools embed so many other opportunities within their curriculum. Common place now is MUN, International Award or The Duke of Edinburgh Award, debating clubs, charity groups and other leadership roles alongside the sporting and arts opportunities. These activities do not just bolster the student's application or CV, they provide real opportunities for learning. Let's take the MUN as an example. The MUN allows students to actively engage in real life global issues, it raises awareness. It requires students to consider a problem from a particular stance, the stance of the country they are representing, regardless of whether their personal stance is the same or quite the opposite. It requires students to share ideas, seek alliances, debate and discuss points and agree resolutions. What successful person could not benefit from these skills? I wonder what my early career might have looked like had I had that opportunity to develop those key life skills at a younger age. You could list similar skills that are developed for the other opportunities available alongside the benefits and importance of those skills. So what are the implications for school leaders? Firstly, what opportunities can you provide for your young learners within the school environment? How can you balance this against curriculum needs? My opinion is that leaders need to be brave and trust that if students are getting genuine development opportunities, it will make them better learners but more importantly allow them a better chance at success longer term. It will mean that schools are fulfilling their responsibility of developing the whole individual so they can reach their potential beyond school and become a globally aware citizen and contribute to society. It will also boost their potential offers from universities and make them more saleable to establishments who are now forced to look deeper to select their students, from a global cohort. For those in the community that may be cynical about the benefits of these opportunities, although I hope there are not too many, simply refer to the fact that to be offered places in the top universities students are having to demonstrate wider development. This justifies the need although I hope you appreciate that the real need is around student development, not CV development. So why are universities looking at more than just grades, is this just a way to distinguish between individuals? I believe not. I believe universities understand that a student who has had opportunities outside the classroom and demonstrated a desire and passion to be involved will be the type of learners more likely to cope with the transition to a new learning model, are more likely to have the skills to succeed and contribute to their new community, the university. So, whilst it is easy to adopt the view that clubs and activities will boost an application merely by their presence, it is much more likely that the presence of those additional learning opportunities demonstrate the individual has had the support and opportunities to develop those key life skills needed to meet their potential, in school and beyond.
