St. Vincent de Paul advised that mortifying judgment and self-will in seminarians cannot be achieved all at once but must be done gradually and patiently. Cardinal Désiré Mercier later recommended 19 ways to practice mortification of the mind and will, such as denying fruitless thoughts, preferring to listen rather than speak, accepting humiliation, and being humble regarding one's efforts. St. Vincent affirmed that mortification, like other virtues, is achieved through repeated acts over a long period of time except when God intervenes.
