THROUGH WATER

in the rainy season. At some point
during your visit you might have
to drive through water. Here are
Riaan Haasbroek’s driving tips.
1 Keep things high and dry
Check your car’s manual to find
out what the wading depth is.
The air intake and electronic
components must stay dry. Now is
a good time to install a snorkel…
2 Walk through
This tip is less applicable in
Moremi, where crocs and hippo
roam. Where possible, walk
through the water to test its
depth. First walk one track, then
the other. Poke around to feel for
rocks, branches or obstructions. In
Moremi, rather check where other
cars have recently driven through.
3 Choose the right gear
Choose a powerful gear (like
second, in low range), which will
give you momentum. Keep the
revs high enough to keep water
out of your exhaust. Don’t storm
the water at speed. Drive at a
constant speed so that a bow wave
forms in front of the car.This helps
to keep water out of the engine.
4 Breathe…
The gearbox, transfer case
and differential housing have
breathers to counter pressure and
the formation of a vacuum.These
breathers can be placed higher
in your engine compartment to
avoid them sucking water. Consult
a professional 4x4 engineering
company before your trip as all
vehicles are different.
5 Cover the snout
Cover the radiator grille with a
piece of tarpaulin to help keep
water out of the engine.
6 Listen to Johnny Cash
Go down with good tunes. In case
your bakkie sinks…
