1. Causes of the Decline in Mortality
Improvement Rates
By: Taylor Saucier
2. Why Did Mortality Improvement Rates Dip in
Recent Years?
Since 2013, there has been a decline in mortality improvement rates.
I investigated this decline and found that the mortality rates affected the younger
population (ages 25 - 34).
This is important because a decline in
mortality rates in younger generations
effect the total population more than a
decline in older populations.
3. The Data
● Society of Actuaries (SOA)
○ US life expectancy
● Human Mortality Database
○ Mortality Improvement data
● Center for Disease Control (CDC)
○ Cause of deaths (COD) data
● Aligned the mortality improvement decline and causes of death
○ Identified the driver of mortality improvement decline
● Data was found from SOA and SOA’s references
4.
5. ● Mortality Improvement plummet began: 2013-2016
● Little to no government response to epidemic
● Spike in ICD Chapter V01-Y89 (COD)
● Spike in ICD Sub-Chapter W00-X59: Other external causes of accidental injury
○ This category includes accidental opioid overdoses
● Opioid epidemic was the primary cause of decline
● Adults ages 25–54 had higher rates of drug overdose deaths in 2017
Analysis and Results
6. Conclusion
I have attributed the recent rise in mortality rates to the opioid epidemic because
there was a significant increase in opioid related deaths yet a negligible difference
in other causes of death.
This epidemic had a disproportionate
effect on those younger than 45,
inflating the impact on life expectancy.
