Gum that claims to clean teeth does not replace daily brushing and flossing. The authors propose designing gum that actually removes plaque by having particles that stick to it like gum sticks to shoes. Such gum could save people time and money while preventing risky oral hygiene behaviors. It would work by having particles in the gum that bind to and pull off plaque. A change in flavor would indicate when the cleaning process is complete, and the gum could then be disposed of through composting.
