Monthly Report of the Calumet College of St. Joseph
Student Government
November 30, 2015
Good Afternoon All,
Clyde Watson wrote, ”November comes/ And November goes,/ With the last red berries/
And the first white snows.” Oh, how true he is about this exact November. As the leaves and
the snow fell, Student Government did not. Well, maybe I did to look at the leaves, but not for
long! I will recap each event that occurred in the past month..
First, we had the Capital Punishment Seminar. Under the leadership of Aimee Perhach
and the Philosophy Club, this event was great! There was a good turnout and Deacon Malcolm
Lunsford had a wonderful presentation. As I was thanking him for his time, he told me that as
long as he made one person change their mind about capital punishment, it was worth his time. I
know that minds were changed.
The second event worth mentioning is the forming of the Athletic Concerns Committee.
Being the non-athletic Student Body President here at CCSJ leaves me in an interesting position.
Most of my constituents are athletes and I do not know their mindset fully. Therefore, I knew I
had to pursue a way to understand their issues. After a restructuring of the Student Athletic
Leadership Council, it became clear there needs to be another avenue for athletes to have their
concerns voiced to administration. Therefore, Student Government made the motion to form this
very important committee. It is chaired by Brian Contreras. Under his guidance, the committee
will allow us to listening to athletes and hopefully solve some of their issues.
As include in all past reports, A Formal Affair: 2016 CCSJ Homecoming is coming
along. Since the last report, not much has changed. The movement of the homecoming to Lost
Marsh has come at a price. I still stand by my decision; however, ticket sales have been low.
Students are not overly happy with the price. My committee and I still have time and tickets will
continue to be pushed. If homecoming does not succeed, I take full responsibility. It will not be
the fault Student Government nor the Homecoming Committee. It will be mine.
Lastly, the Constitution is finally complete. Dr. Lowery has reviewed the draft
constitution and has given us helpful comments. Will the Constitution get passed before the
spring semester like I have hoped for? That is yet to be seen.
Some other notes, Student Leaders will be receiving shirts on behalf of Student
Government that recorgnize their leadership. I have had the honor of serving on many college
committees and have sat in on many meeting. Not to toot my own horn because it is not just me,
it is my whole board, but I think we have raised the standard of Student Government. Few
institutions allow for a student representative to sit on the Board of Trustees. Even fewer allow
that representative to speak. For that, I thank Dr. Lowery and the entire Board of Trustees for
valuing the voice of the students.
In close, John F. Kennedy said, “Leadership and learning are indispensable to each
other.” Let us take what we have learned this semester, learn from it, and move forward as better
leaders. Thank you for the opportunity to continue to be your Student Body President.
Gratefully Yours,
Luke Matulewicz
President of the Student Body
