South Africa faces particular challenges from COVID-19 due to high poverty levels, crowded informal settlements with limited access to water, and high rates of HIV and TB that could exacerbate the virus's effects. In response, the South African president declared a State of Disaster and enacted increasingly strict regulations, including a nationwide lockdown on March 26th, 2020, representing the most comprehensive limitation on freedoms since apartheid. The lockdown aimed to limit the virus's spread in light of South Africa's vulnerabilities.
