Modelling
101
Could you be a model? (exercise)
The basics on how to become a model
How to acquire a great runway walk
Could you be a model?
1. Your friend wants to take a picture of you at a party. You:
Stick out your tongue and try to make a silly face.
Flash the smile you've perfected in the mirror.
Reposition yourself and show your "good side."
2. You go on a shopping spree at the mall and call up:
Your friends — you need moral support when trying on clothes.
Your best friend — she'll tell you how you REALLY look in the outfits.
No one. You know that you'll look great in anything!
3. You and your friends see the sign-up sheet for the fashion show at school.
You:
Say no way — you’d be too embarrassed in front of all those people!
Sign up only because your friends are making you do it.
Are already on the list — you were the first!
Could you be a model?
4. For your birthday, your grandma gave you an old-school top. You:
Wear it only when she comes to visit.
Throw it into the back of your
closet.
Put it on and throw a belt around it. You can rock anything!
5. You're asked to be interviewed by your school's TV station. You:
Say no. You're camera shy, plus TV adds 10 pounds.
Work the camera and ace the interview.
Are nervous, but get through it with only a few takes.
6. Your idea of hard work is:
Putting on skinny jeans.
Working two back-to-back shifts and still smiling!
Getting your hair and makeup beautiful for a date.
The basics on how to become a model
1. Take care of
yourself!
Take care of yourself!
• Focus on keeping your skin clear and glowing. Wash
your face in the morning and at night. And remember to
wash your make up off before you go to sleep.
• Shiny and healthy hair is important. Some agencies and
Managers prefer the ‘natural greasy look”.
• Fitness is important.
• Eat right. Contrary to what some people tell you, you
should eat healthy foods, as well as healthy amount of
food. Vegies, fruits, whole grains, and proteins should
make up the basics of your diet. Sugars, starches, empty
carbohydrates and unhealthy fats should be avoided as
much as possible.
2. Know the type of modelling you
are suited to.
Know the type of modelling you are
suited to.
 A Plus Size Model:
If your body is full and curvaceous, you may
be able to be a plus size model.
 A Runway Model:
Most women on the catwalk are at least
5’9”, and commonly small-breasted.
Men are mostly 5’11” and 6’2”.
 A Print Model:
Most editorial female models are at least
5'7, but a beautiful face with great
personality are really important for print models.
Know the type of modelling you are
suited to.
 An Underwear Model:
For women, this requires large breasts but small
hips. For men this requires broad shoulders but
slim waists.
 A Spokesmodel:
Models who are hired to be consistently
associated with a specific brand. Contrary to
popular thought models don't always have to
verbally promote the brand.
Know the type of modelling you are
suited to.
 A Promotional Model:
Some companies want their customer base to
interact directly with models who are generally
attractive with like-able personalities to
promote their brand. You may see these models
in grocery stores, events or clubs promoting
things like food, liquor brands or new products.
Know the type of modelling you
are suited to.
 A Trade Show Model:
Hired by companies or brands to advertise
to attendees at a trade show tent or booth.
Typically not employed by the company but
hired as "freelance“ models for the event.
 Other Types of Modeling:
If you don't fit any of the face or body
descriptions, perhaps you can be a foot,
hair, or hand model. There's also the option
of being an alternative model.
3. Portfolios and
Agencies
Portfolios and Agencies
 Take some snapshots.
You should shoot them in nice natural
light without a lot of distraction in the photos.
These are meant for the agencies to get a look
at you in a raw state. Consider a headshot, a
body shot, and profile photos.
Portfolios and Agencies
 Consider getting some professional shots taken.
• Get your favorite professional shots printed into
8x10s. Save these in case you are asked to leave
a photograph anywhere before you have
professional ones done.
• If you've got enough of these photos, consider
putting everything into a portfolio, or "book."
Bring this portfolio with you to castings or to
agencies.
4. Take and know
your measurement
and stats
Take and know your
measurements and stats.
These will help modeling agencies place you.
 Basic measurements are height, weight,
and shoe size.
 Know your clothing measurements such as
dress size, hip, waist, chest etc.
 Know your own personal stats, such as
hair color, eye color, skin tone etc.
5. Be professional, polite and
courteous.
Be professional, polite, and courteous.
 Always show up on time to any appointment or shoot. If
you're late or rude, word soon gets around and then
nobody will want to work with you.
 Be organized. Models often get called off places at the last
minute and have very busy days. You need to be on top of
things if you want to succeed. Buying a day-to-day planner
can really help.
 Develop relationships with photographers. You help the
photographer look great, and they will help you look great.
It's a win-win situation, so be sure to treat photographers
with respect.
6. Confirm whether or
not there will be a
make-up artist (MUA).
 Look through fashion magazines and practice the looks
you see on yourself and your friends. Then invent your
own looks and perfect them.
 Being able to apply makeup like a pro is a must for an
aspiring model. It requires practice, practice, and more
practice.
7. Have a great
attitude
Be professional, patient and pleasant to work with. Shoots
can last hours, even weeks. No one likes a diva.
8.Have great
organisational skills
to keep track of
schedules and
finances.
Often as not, especially within freelance modelling,
you’ll have to keep an eye on your own schedule, pay
and expenses. An organised brain and diary is a must.
9. Be able to take rejection
and constructive criticism.
Modelling is highly competitive. You won’t
be right for every job. The trick is to pick
yourself up and take rejection as something
to build upon, rather than knock you down.
10. Read before
signing on the
dotted line
If you've impressed the agency enough to get an
offer, take a deep breath before doing a celebratory
dance and signing a contract. "Do not sign anything
without reading first!"
"Do your research, and just go with what your gut
tells you." Make sure any questions you have about
your contract are answered and clarified before you
sign.
•Anyone can walk the runway but a GREAT walk
requires practise and perseverance.
•Mastering the various aspects of body language,
and confidence are key to a great runway walk.
•Helpful media applications include: YouTube,
Facebook, and etc.

Modelling 101

  • 1. Modelling 101 Could you be a model? (exercise) The basics on how to become a model How to acquire a great runway walk
  • 2. Could you be a model? 1. Your friend wants to take a picture of you at a party. You: Stick out your tongue and try to make a silly face. Flash the smile you've perfected in the mirror. Reposition yourself and show your "good side." 2. You go on a shopping spree at the mall and call up: Your friends — you need moral support when trying on clothes. Your best friend — she'll tell you how you REALLY look in the outfits. No one. You know that you'll look great in anything! 3. You and your friends see the sign-up sheet for the fashion show at school. You: Say no way — you’d be too embarrassed in front of all those people! Sign up only because your friends are making you do it. Are already on the list — you were the first!
  • 3. Could you be a model? 4. For your birthday, your grandma gave you an old-school top. You: Wear it only when she comes to visit. Throw it into the back of your closet. Put it on and throw a belt around it. You can rock anything! 5. You're asked to be interviewed by your school's TV station. You: Say no. You're camera shy, plus TV adds 10 pounds. Work the camera and ace the interview. Are nervous, but get through it with only a few takes. 6. Your idea of hard work is: Putting on skinny jeans. Working two back-to-back shifts and still smiling! Getting your hair and makeup beautiful for a date.
  • 4. The basics on how to become a model
  • 5. 1. Take care of yourself!
  • 6. Take care of yourself! • Focus on keeping your skin clear and glowing. Wash your face in the morning and at night. And remember to wash your make up off before you go to sleep. • Shiny and healthy hair is important. Some agencies and Managers prefer the ‘natural greasy look”. • Fitness is important. • Eat right. Contrary to what some people tell you, you should eat healthy foods, as well as healthy amount of food. Vegies, fruits, whole grains, and proteins should make up the basics of your diet. Sugars, starches, empty carbohydrates and unhealthy fats should be avoided as much as possible.
  • 7. 2. Know the type of modelling you are suited to.
  • 8. Know the type of modelling you are suited to.  A Plus Size Model: If your body is full and curvaceous, you may be able to be a plus size model.  A Runway Model: Most women on the catwalk are at least 5’9”, and commonly small-breasted. Men are mostly 5’11” and 6’2”.  A Print Model: Most editorial female models are at least 5'7, but a beautiful face with great personality are really important for print models.
  • 9. Know the type of modelling you are suited to.  An Underwear Model: For women, this requires large breasts but small hips. For men this requires broad shoulders but slim waists.  A Spokesmodel: Models who are hired to be consistently associated with a specific brand. Contrary to popular thought models don't always have to verbally promote the brand.
  • 10. Know the type of modelling you are suited to.  A Promotional Model: Some companies want their customer base to interact directly with models who are generally attractive with like-able personalities to promote their brand. You may see these models in grocery stores, events or clubs promoting things like food, liquor brands or new products.
  • 11. Know the type of modelling you are suited to.  A Trade Show Model: Hired by companies or brands to advertise to attendees at a trade show tent or booth. Typically not employed by the company but hired as "freelance“ models for the event.  Other Types of Modeling: If you don't fit any of the face or body descriptions, perhaps you can be a foot, hair, or hand model. There's also the option of being an alternative model.
  • 12. 3. Portfolios and Agencies
  • 13. Portfolios and Agencies  Take some snapshots. You should shoot them in nice natural light without a lot of distraction in the photos. These are meant for the agencies to get a look at you in a raw state. Consider a headshot, a body shot, and profile photos.
  • 14. Portfolios and Agencies  Consider getting some professional shots taken. • Get your favorite professional shots printed into 8x10s. Save these in case you are asked to leave a photograph anywhere before you have professional ones done. • If you've got enough of these photos, consider putting everything into a portfolio, or "book." Bring this portfolio with you to castings or to agencies.
  • 15. 4. Take and know your measurement and stats
  • 16. Take and know your measurements and stats. These will help modeling agencies place you.  Basic measurements are height, weight, and shoe size.  Know your clothing measurements such as dress size, hip, waist, chest etc.  Know your own personal stats, such as hair color, eye color, skin tone etc.
  • 17. 5. Be professional, polite and courteous.
  • 18. Be professional, polite, and courteous.  Always show up on time to any appointment or shoot. If you're late or rude, word soon gets around and then nobody will want to work with you.  Be organized. Models often get called off places at the last minute and have very busy days. You need to be on top of things if you want to succeed. Buying a day-to-day planner can really help.  Develop relationships with photographers. You help the photographer look great, and they will help you look great. It's a win-win situation, so be sure to treat photographers with respect.
  • 19. 6. Confirm whether or not there will be a make-up artist (MUA).  Look through fashion magazines and practice the looks you see on yourself and your friends. Then invent your own looks and perfect them.  Being able to apply makeup like a pro is a must for an aspiring model. It requires practice, practice, and more practice.
  • 20. 7. Have a great attitude Be professional, patient and pleasant to work with. Shoots can last hours, even weeks. No one likes a diva.
  • 21. 8.Have great organisational skills to keep track of schedules and finances. Often as not, especially within freelance modelling, you’ll have to keep an eye on your own schedule, pay and expenses. An organised brain and diary is a must.
  • 22. 9. Be able to take rejection and constructive criticism. Modelling is highly competitive. You won’t be right for every job. The trick is to pick yourself up and take rejection as something to build upon, rather than knock you down.
  • 23. 10. Read before signing on the dotted line If you've impressed the agency enough to get an offer, take a deep breath before doing a celebratory dance and signing a contract. "Do not sign anything without reading first!" "Do your research, and just go with what your gut tells you." Make sure any questions you have about your contract are answered and clarified before you sign.
