One more time, King Vikram went back in the
dense forest to fetch Betal, who had flown away
afterVikram had answered his question. Betal, as
always, began another interesting story to keep
Vikram entertained during the journey.
The story went like this: Once upon a time, there
lived a learned man in a city, who had four sons.
He had had made it a point to teach the Vedas
and the holy scriptures to all of them.
One day, the brothers decided to venture out
into the world on their own, learn a special skill
and then come back again to meet each other.
So, they went to learn something extraordinary
and after some time, came back to meet each
other at the appointed time.
They were each keen to show off the skills they
had learnt and prove themselves worthy to their
father.
Each bragged about the special skill that he had
learned. The first one said,“I can create the flesh
of a creature from a single bone of the creature.”
The second one said, “I can make the hair and
skin of a creature.”The third one said,“I can create
the limbs of a creature”.The fourth one said,“And
I can infuse life into that creature.”
So, they went to the forest to find a piece of bone
and put their skills to test. During their search,
they happened to find a lion’s bone lying
somewhere in the forest.
The first one created the flesh over the bone,
using his special skill. The second one added skin
and hair to the lion using his powers and the
third one created the lion’s limbs. The fourth
young man was waiting to flaunt his skills and
when his turn came, he chanted some mantras
and infused life into the lion’s body. As soon as
the lion came to life, it pounced on them and
killed them all.
Betal asked King Vikram, “Who among the four
brothers was responsible for the death of all of
them?”
Vikram replied,“The fourth one, as he gave life to
the otherwise dead structure of bones flesh and
limbs and hair.”
Betal appreciated the king for his intelligence
and went back to the tree.

What causes Goosebumps?
Certain situations like a temperature drop, a strong feeling of
fear - a strong emotion results in us getting goosebumps. When we
experience a strong emotion like fear, our brain sends a signal to
our muscles that make them tense up. When the muscles in our
skin that are attached to hair tense up, they make the hair pull our
skin, creating a layer of insulation- thus creating goosebumps.
Why are Goosebumps called Goosebumps?
They are called goosebumps because when they emerge your skin
looks like that of a goose whose feathers have been plucked!
Our ancestors were very hairy. They experienced a pilomotor reflex
common in animals that made the animal look bigger when
goosebumps appeared. This helped them scare many enemies. As
humans evolved, body hair became lesser and the reflex had more
to do with muscles now.

varying levels of turbulence (movement of air).
As the atmosphere churns, the light from the
star is refracted in different directions. This
means that some of the light reaches us
directly and some gets bent slightly away. This
causes us to see varying images of the stars
brightness and position, which makes them
appear to be twinkling. You might notice that
stars closer to the horizon twinkle more. You
will notice that stars closer to the horizon will
appear to twinkle more than other stars. This is
because there is a lot more atmosphere
between you and a star near the horizon than
between you and a star higher in the sky.
So you see, twinkling of the stars is merely an
optical illusion! There’s a scientific term for this
phenomenon. It’s called “astronomical scintil-
lation”. Sounds heavy doesn’t it? “Twinkling”
sounds so much more fun and friendly!
Telescopes like the Hubble telescope are in
space, where there is no atmospheric barrier
between the stars. Which is why images from
these telescopes do not show the stars twin-
kling.
Everybody has heard of the old rhyme that
goes, “Twinkle, Twinkle, little star…”
Ever wondered why that happens, though?
Why do stars twinkle in the first place?
Stars are far, far, away from the earth. Hence,
they appear as little bright spots of light to us,
even though they are gigantic balls of fire.
The earth has a protective envelope called the
atmosphere, which keeps us safe from the
harmful radiations of the sun. This atmosphere
is made up of various layers, which vary in
density.
Light from the stars is visible to us through
these layers of atmosphere, which experience

Potala Palace is located on
the Marpori hill. It lies
between the Drepung and
Sera monastaries and the old
city of Lhasa, making it an
ideal site for governing
establishments, as pointed
out by Konchong Chophel,
spiritual advisor to the 5th
Dalai Lama. The 5th agreed
and began construction of
the palace in the year 1645.
Though the external
construction was completed in a quick 3 years, the interiors and furnishings took around 45 years to
be completed! Since its completion, it was the chief residence of the Dalai Lama till the 14th Dalai
Lama fled to India during the Tibetan Uprising in 1959.
The palace is a sturdy complex, comprising of the Red and White palaces and their ancillary
buildings. The White palace is a massive 13 story building with over 1000 rooms and 10000 shrines.
There are more than 200000 statues and artifacts in and around the palace. Especially noteworthy
are the 698 murals on the walls and along the corridors. It also houses the main ceremonial hall and
the throne of the Dalai Lama. Higher up the mountain and to the west lies the Red Palace, which
contains the gilded burial stupas of past Dalai Lamas. Further west is the private monastery of the
Dalai Lama, the Namgyel Dratshang. This 117 m structure has copper based foundations, which
help proof it against earthquakes.

He woke up from a deep sleep, not feeling
like himself. His bedroom looked a little
different. The colours didn't look the same.
He shrugged it off, thinking he was just
sleepy. He sat up and turned to get out of
bed. He felt around for his slippers next to
his bed and let out a scream! The soles of
his feet were feeling very sensitive. The
sprinkler went off in the garden and he
heard it loud and clear. What was going on
with his senses?

  • 2. One more time, King Vikram went back in the dense forest to fetch Betal, who had flown away afterVikram had answered his question. Betal, as always, began another interesting story to keep Vikram entertained during the journey. The story went like this: Once upon a time, there lived a learned man in a city, who had four sons. He had had made it a point to teach the Vedas and the holy scriptures to all of them. One day, the brothers decided to venture out into the world on their own, learn a special skill and then come back again to meet each other. So, they went to learn something extraordinary and after some time, came back to meet each other at the appointed time. They were each keen to show off the skills they had learnt and prove themselves worthy to their father. Each bragged about the special skill that he had learned. The first one said,“I can create the flesh of a creature from a single bone of the creature.” The second one said, “I can make the hair and skin of a creature.”The third one said,“I can create the limbs of a creature”.The fourth one said,“And I can infuse life into that creature.” So, they went to the forest to find a piece of bone and put their skills to test. During their search, they happened to find a lion’s bone lying somewhere in the forest. The first one created the flesh over the bone, using his special skill. The second one added skin and hair to the lion using his powers and the third one created the lion’s limbs. The fourth young man was waiting to flaunt his skills and when his turn came, he chanted some mantras and infused life into the lion’s body. As soon as the lion came to life, it pounced on them and killed them all. Betal asked King Vikram, “Who among the four brothers was responsible for the death of all of them?” Vikram replied,“The fourth one, as he gave life to the otherwise dead structure of bones flesh and limbs and hair.” Betal appreciated the king for his intelligence and went back to the tree. • 4. 3 What causes Goosebumps? Certain situations like a temperature drop, a strong feeling of fear - a strong emotion results in us getting goosebumps. When we experience a strong emotion like fear, our brain sends a signal to our muscles that make them tense up. When the muscles in our skin that are attached to hair tense up, they make the hair pull our skin, creating a layer of insulation- thus creating goosebumps. Why are Goosebumps called Goosebumps? They are called goosebumps because when they emerge your skin looks like that of a goose whose feathers have been plucked! Our ancestors were very hairy. They experienced a pilomotor reflex common in animals that made the animal look bigger when goosebumps appeared. This helped them scare many enemies. As humans evolved, body hair became lesser and the reflex had more to do with muscles now. Dance! It’s Good For You! Do You Know What Causes Goosebumps?
  • 5. 4 varying levels of turbulence (movement of air). As the atmosphere churns, the light from the star is refracted in different directions. This means that some of the light reaches us directly and some gets bent slightly away. This causes us to see varying images of the stars brightness and position, which makes them appear to be twinkling. You might notice that stars closer to the horizon twinkle more. You will notice that stars closer to the horizon will appear to twinkle more than other stars. This is because there is a lot more atmosphere between you and a star near the horizon than between you and a star higher in the sky. So you see, twinkling of the stars is merely an optical illusion! There’s a scientific term for this phenomenon. It’s called “astronomical scintil- lation”. Sounds heavy doesn’t it? “Twinkling” sounds so much more fun and friendly! Telescopes like the Hubble telescope are in space, where there is no atmospheric barrier between the stars. Which is why images from these telescopes do not show the stars twin- kling. Everybody has heard of the old rhyme that goes, “Twinkle, Twinkle, little star…” Ever wondered why that happens, though? Why do stars twinkle in the first place? Stars are far, far, away from the earth. Hence, they appear as little bright spots of light to us, even though they are gigantic balls of fire. The earth has a protective envelope called the atmosphere, which keeps us safe from the harmful radiations of the sun. This atmosphere is made up of various layers, which vary in density. Light from the stars is visible to us through these layers of atmosphere, which experience Mr. Brush on his steed, dashing with speed, was asked if he had time to spare; Said he, with a smile, I’ll be back in a while, but at present I’m hunting the hair! • 6. Potala Palace is located on the Marpori hill. It lies between the Drepung and Sera monastaries and the old city of Lhasa, making it an ideal site for governing establishments, as pointed out by Konchong Chophel, spiritual advisor to the 5th Dalai Lama. The 5th agreed and began construction of the palace in the year 1645. Though the external construction was completed in a quick 3 years, the interiors and furnishings took around 45 years to be completed! Since its completion, it was the chief residence of the Dalai Lama till the 14th Dalai Lama fled to India during the Tibetan Uprising in 1959. The palace is a sturdy complex, comprising of the Red and White palaces and their ancillary buildings. The White palace is a massive 13 story building with over 1000 rooms and 10000 shrines. There are more than 200000 statues and artifacts in and around the palace. Especially noteworthy are the 698 murals on the walls and along the corridors. It also houses the main ceremonial hall and the throne of the Dalai Lama. Higher up the mountain and to the west lies the Red Palace, which contains the gilded burial stupas of past Dalai Lamas. Further west is the private monastery of the Dalai Lama, the Namgyel Dratshang. This 117 m structure has copper based foundations, which help proof it against earthquakes.
