Native applications are a remnant of the Jurassic period of computer history. We will look back on these past 10 years as the time we finally grew out of our desktop mindset and started down the path of writing apps for an infinite number of platforms. As the cost of computation and connectivity plummets, manufacturers are going to put 'interactivity' into every device. Some of this will be trivial: my power adaptor knows it's charging history. Some of it will be control related: my television will be grand central for my smart home. But at it's heart, we'll be swimming in world where every device will have 'an app'. What will it take for us to get here, what technologies will it take to make this happen?
This talk will discuss how the principles of the open web must apply not only to prototocols but to hardware as well. How can we build a 'DNS for hardware' so the menagerie of devices has a chance for working together?
Verwachte eindtijd 17:00 uur.

Deja vu security Adam Cecchetti - Security is a Snapshot in Time BSidesPDX ...adamdeja
As the air gap between our daily lives and the Internet continues to shrink the security of our personal data and devices grows in importance. We are facing the daily threat of putting 2000s era computers bolted to toasters online while expecting them to defend against 2017 capable attackers. This talk will explore the continuing trend of IoT, discuss how we’ve been here before, and layout strategies for keeping pace with attackers in the future. This talk will focus on enumerating this risk, discuss the challenges involved, and explore solutions.
First, we will examine this history of how we got here, and what it means to say “security is a snapshot in time.” We then introduce the idea of shared ken – the range of one’s knowledge or sight – and how it impacts security. Third, we discuss the influence of data as code, the meta game, and secrecy as a way of mastering impact and ken.
This talk will allow attendees to walk away with
A holistic view of the history of computer security and how it impacts them today
The importance of extending the range of collective vision to reduce blind spots
Practical advice for BSiders to grow their mindset and improve their impact

Working w/ Emerging Technologies Explained by GoodRead's Sr. PM Product School
Everyone wants to work on the next big thing but what's the difference between working on an existing product, a new product, or new technology? Goodreads Senior Product Manager, Jessica Johnson, talked about this and about how new technologies always move slower than you expect.
Designing for an Augmented Reality worldthomas.purves
How “Augmented Reality” and the mobile web changes everything
Mobile broadband access and ever-smarter phones are shaking the internet out its lofty cloud and bringing the web into the real world. As a result, the old “real world”, and many old ideas and many old business models will be running out of places to hide from the pervasive influence of the net.
Meanwhile, each of our smart phones are in many ways even better than the old clunky tools we used to use to surf the net. Our mobile devices are not only connected but, also bristling with sensors like radios, cameras, microphones, GPS etc. that can directly perceive and interact with the world around you. We’re reaching a point where it’s theoretically possible to point that device at almost anything: a landmark, a product on a store shelf, your friends or a crowd of people; and draw from the cloud and your social graph as much, or perhaps more, relevant information than you ever wanted to know. Oh, and the cloud will be watching you and whatever’s around you as well.
In the new augmented reality, the web surfs you.
The goal of this talk will be to provide you with a fast paced overview of what this new “augmented” reality will mean for how we socialize, for how we sell and market physical products, for architecture, for media and entertainment, for public policy, crime, privacy and, as well, few early signals for what might be the new killer apps.
If all that is not interesting enough, I will also bring free beer.

They tell you in these conferences that DevOps is not about tools, but about culture. And they are partially right. I am going to tell you that it’s not only about culture or tools but also abstractions.
It is a lot about how you see software and its value. About our mental model of what software is: how it runs, evolves, and interacts with the other facets of an enterprise.
We used to view software as code. As a state of code. Now we think about software as change, as a flow. A dynamic system where people, machines, and processes interact continuously.
At Platform.sh we spend a bunch of time asking ourselves not “How do you build?” - or even “How do you build consistently?” - but rather “What does it mean to consistently build in a world where change is good?” A world that lets you push security fixes into production as soon as they’re available because you don’t want to be an Equifax but you do want stability.
In this presentation, I will go over what we think software is and why having the right ideas about software will help you get your culture right and your tooling aligned, as well as gain in productivity, and general happiness and well-being.

Kubernetes & AI - Beauty and the Beast !?! @KCD Istanbul 2024Tobias Schneck
As AI technology is pushing into IT I was wondering myself, as an “infrastructure container kubernetes guy”, how get this fancy AI technology get managed from an infrastructure operational view? Is it possible to apply our lovely cloud native principals as well? What benefit’s both technologies could bring to each other?
Let me take this questions and provide you a short journey through existing deployment models and use cases for AI software. On practical examples, we discuss what cloud/on-premise strategy we may need for applying it to our own infrastructure to get it to work from an enterprise perspective. I want to give an overview about infrastructure requirements and technologies, what could be beneficial or limiting your AI use cases in an enterprise environment. An interactive Demo will give you some insides, what approaches I got already working for real.

Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!

31. This really isn’t that complicated
1. Smart devices need web pages
2. Smart displays need a ‘discovery service’
40. What is our perspective shift?
1. Apps are heavy
They prevent Just-in-time interaction
2. Our next “Model shift”
From Software to Experience
3. We need an open discovery service
Native plus Web
4.We are the next Apple
Everything we need lying at our feet.
