1. What's your favourite marketing
inspiration tune?
Much of my day is spent meeting
with team members or client
partners, so I don't often get a
chance to listen to music on the
job. But when I do, it has to be
something upbeat and energizing,
like Billy Joel's "Still Rock and
Roll to Me."
2. Why does it get you in the
mood?
You can't frown when you hear that
song. It's impossible.
3. How or where do you like to
listen to it?
Definitely on my computer. I have
a pretty comprehensive Billy Joel
collection on iTunes. Though, if
I'm truly in the mood for a laugh,
I'll watch one of his classic
music videos on YouTube. The man
can sing, but dancing is not a

4. If you hadn't been a world

a rockstar you would have been...?
I can't imagine a world in which I
would have made it as a rockstar.
I can't sing and don't think my

2. Why does it get you in the

Honestly, it's hard to articulate.
But I guess... "I feel it in my
bones," to quote the lyrics.
3. How or where do you like to
listen to it?
When I'm out walking my dogs (or
rolling them, in the case of the
one in a wheelchair!). It's how I
relax and decompress from
essentially being online all day
-- a walk in fresh air, with my
beloved pups.
4. If you hadn't been a world

I would've been hungry most of the

2. Why does it get you in the

It's that perfect blend of smooth

feel the self confidence that
comes from being the master of
your craft coming through the
song. That's the kind of
inspiration you want to have when
tackling a big problem or a blank

3. How or where do you like to

Start Me Up

1. What's your favourite marketing
inspiration tune?
"Start Me Up" by the Rolling Stones. So
it's a bit of a cliché, but it is true
that, a classic never dies. I'm also a
metal kid at heart, so Korn's "Blind" is
the ultimate hype up song. I mean, the
first lyrics to the track are: "Are you
ready?"
2. Why does it get you in the mood?
Perhaps because I'm a writer, I'm
motivated by the lyrics, but I think the
most telling tale of tunes is the guitar.
"Start Me Up" and "Blind" both have
pretty saucy riffs that aren't easily
replicated. Sound synergy between guitar
and bass is such a great part of rock
music. Sometimes I dissect the songs and
hone in on one particular instrument, or
just the vocals. It makes me think about
how integral each member is to the
overall sound. Talk about instrumental
value- pun intended :)
3. How or where do you like to listen to
it?
Spotify is great because it's a desktop
and mobile application, so I use it
wherever I go (but mostly at my desk
since I'm hovered over my keyboard
plotting content marketing strategies to
take over the world!) Muhahaha! We've had
some stellar weather in New Jersey
recently, so I'll take my computer
outside in the backyard and get my groove
on in the sunshine!
4. If you hadn't been a world class
marketer and could have been a rockstar
you would have been...?
Gwen Stefani, because let's be real, she
is a rockstar AND a world class marketer!
She has found a way to translate her
personal brand across all of her efforts:
a long standing band with a loyal
following; a solo career; and a clothing
line that spawned accessories and
perfume! She's been quoted as saying
that, at the end of the day, she's still
just amazed at the opportunities she has
had and how grateful she is for it. She's
been a rockstar I admired as a little
girl, and to this day, find inspiration
in her art and music. That's the good
stuff!

One Little Song
Doug Kessler
Creative Director /
Co-Founder
Velocity Partners
1. What's your favourite marketing
inspiration tune?
One Little Song by Gillian Welch
2. Why does it get you in the
mood?
It's all about finding something
that hasn't been said yet – and
that feels like a good definition
of the best kind of content
marketing.
It's also got a lovely,
introspective groove which can be
a nice place to start (unless I
need an injection of energy).
3. How or where do you like to
listen to it?
Headphones. Back garden. Bourbon-
based cocktail (maybe a Dark &
Stormy but with bourbon instead of
rum).
4. If you hadn't been a world
class marketer and could have been
a rockstar you would have been…?
Not sure he's a rockstar but Dave
Rawlings is the guitarist I am in
my dreams.
And Nick Lowe is the songwriter.
For someone more mainstream, maybe
Tom Petty.

Internet Friends
April Dunford
Managing Director /
Co-Founder
RocketScope
1. What's your favourite marketing
inspiration tune?
Knife Party, Internet Friends.
2. Why does it get you in the
mood?
I like this one because I think
it's a good reminder about how
sometimes we take social media a
little too seriously.
3. How or where do you like to
listen to it?
I am marathon training at the
moment and I listen to a lot of
hard electronic music on my long
runs to keep me going. This one
came up on a podcast and I laughed
so hard I almost bumped into a
tree :)
4. If you hadn't been a world
class marketer and could have been
a rockstar you would have been...?
I would like to be a singer in an
80's hair metal band. I'm thinking
maybe Rob Halford from Judas
Priest or Bruce Dickinson from
Iron Maiden. Those guys have
marketing figured out - if you
focus on the people that love what
you do and you make them really
happy, you can make money on that
forever while giving the finger to
everyone who mocks your style.

The Devil’s Right Hand
Joe Chernov
VP Marketing
Kinvey
1. What's your favourite marketing
inspiration tune?
The Devil's Right Hand, by Steve
Earle
2. Why does it get you in the
mood?
I think the best stuff I've been
part of involved a fair measure of
risk, specifically the risk of
looking stupid. This song has
absolutely no "marketing"
relevance - in Earle's own words,
it's about a juvenile delinquent
in the early 19th century - but
its attitude can steel you against
the fear of looking foolish.
3. How or where do you like to
listen to it?
I can't work while listening to
music. Too distracting. I listen
on my headphones before diving
into a project.
4. If you hadn't been a world
class marketer and could have been
a rockstar you would have been...?
I would have liked to be in a band
like The Replacements. Rock-and-
roll is for the young, and nobody
nailed youthful angst as well as
these guys (and they broke a bunch
of stuff ... like rock stars
should).

Feed Me Diamonds
Jascha Kaykas-
Wolff
Chief Marketing
Officer
Mindjet
1. What's your favourite marketing
inspiration tune?
I'm a huge synth-pop fan and really enjoy
MNDR. These days I've been enjoying Feed
Me Diamonds (RAC Remix) to work to.
2. Why does it get you in the mood?
I grew up listening to music nearly
constantly. My mom was a rock concert
promoter in the 80s and 90s and that gave
me access to pretty much every genre of
music you can imagine. As I culled
through different types of music in
different settings I found certain types
of melodic tracks worked better for me
when I wanted to be productive doing
homework. Most of MNDR's music reminds me
of the early 90s because of the mellow
breakbeat rhythms and clear rock
influences. I also really appreciate
emotional female lead singers…pretty much
every guy my age had a crush on Susanna
Hoffs and that's hard to lose as an
influence.
3. How or where do you like to listen to
it?
Its more about where I don't listen to
music :) At home we have a full house
setup (inside and out) with a Sonos that
I LOVE. It's always on and I'm always the
DJ which sometimes drives my family nuts.
In the car and the gym I use my iPhone
and either my library on iTunes match,
Spotify, RDIO or Songza. Last but not
least, in the office, I've setup a
my Onkyo TX-NR929 receiver and amp
connected to an Apple TV that I share
with the team. We all use airfoil to
connect and share playlists.
4. If you hadn't been a world class
marketer and could have been a rockstar
you would have been...?
I used to DJ House music in the mid 90s
in LA. As much as I love being on stage
if I could have been a 'rockstar' my
druthers would be to be behind the
scenes. I'd love to have my own label
finding and promoting great EDM talent
and who knows, it could happen! I'm still
'sorta' young :)

Everything in its Right Place
Phil Harvey
Creative Director
Coldplay
1. What's your favourite marketing
inspiration tune?
Everything In Its Right Place –
Radiohead.
2. Why does it get you in the
mood?
a) Because it's beautiful
b) Because it's utterly
unconventional
c) Because Radiohead would never
license it to market anything so
it represents something pure
3. How or where do you like to
listen to it?
Big fat headphones, very loud.
4. If you hadn't been a world
class marketer and could have been
a rockstar you would have been...?
Bez from the Happy Mondays –
Because I can't play an
instrument.
I can't dance either come to think
of it.

Closer
Amrita Chandra
Managing Director /
Co-Founder
RocketScope
1. What's your favourite marketing
inspiration tune?
Closer by Tegan and Sara.
2. Why does it get you in the
mood?
It's pure pop perfection - super
upbeat and great vocals. It's
better than having a coffee in
terms of getting energized. I
call it the Excel antidote.
3. How or where do you like to
listen to it?
Usually on my headphone (computer
or iPhone), with the volume turned
up.
4. If you hadn't been a world
class marketer and could have been
a rockstar you would have been…?
I'd be Daniel Lanois because he's
a great, intelligent songwriter
and a brilliant producer, yet he
is not household-name-famous so I
could still go out without being
mobbed.

Not Afraid
Joe Pulizzi
Founder
Content Marketing
Institute
1. What's your favourite marketing
inspiration tune?
Not Afraid by Eminem.
2. Why does it get you in the
mood?
To really break through in today's
cluttered marketplace, you have to
take risks and truly be the
informational provider for your
industry. That means taking it up
a notch, even if you are the
underdog. Nothing gets you in the
mood for world domination better
than Eminem.
3. How or where do you like to
listen to it?
While running. I can listen to it
over and over. The best ideas
come after the five mile mark.
4. If you hadn't been a world
class marketer and could have been
a rockstar you would have been...?
Let's take it down a notch...Mr.
Billy Joel. No artist sings a
better story than Mr. Joel. But I
share a birthday with Bono, so
that's a close second.

15. Track 12
Price Tag
Jennifer
Burnham
Director of Social
Strategy and Content
Salesforce
1. What's your favorite marketing
inspiration tune?
I generally get hooked on one song for
about a month and it becomes my go-to
song for inspiration and energy. As
addictive as a popular meme, I play it
over and over tirelessly as it serves as
a backdrop to a blog post or Google
spreadsheet. One song that has stayed
with me for a while is 'Price Tag' by
Jessie J. Its catchy, upbeat and
contagious, like the best viral content.
2. Why does it get you in the mood?
This positive, upbeat tune shakes me out
of any meeting or spreadsheet stupor I
might find myself in, lifts my spirits
and gets my feet tapping. Content
creation, like music creation, is best
done in a positive, high energy, joyous
frame of mind. The simple message of this
particular song is about music, but can
be applied to marketing, too: we don't do
it for the end sale, we do it to delight.
3. How or where do you like to listen to
it?
You can find me getting inspired by my
favorite marketing tune while sitting at
my desk on the 15th floor of One
California in San Francisco, looking out
on the view of the Ferry Building and
Market Street. I fuel up with a good cup
of Blue Bottle coffee, insert my flower-
shaped ear buds, and launch a Spotify
playlist to spend 60-minutes writing
something new. You know you are in the
zone when time flies by and your latest
concept has taken flight.
4. If you hadn't been a world class
marketer and could have been a rockstar
you would have been...?
I would have been the world’s first B:B
rock legend. My hits would include unique
interpretations of such chart-toppers
as:” 'Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough
[Leads] by Michael Jackson, “Follow You
Down [The Sales Funnel]” by the Gin
Blossoms, and “Dang, Wish I was Your
Solution Provider “ by Sophie B Hawkins.

Songbird
Ardath Albee
CEO
Marketing
Interations
1. What's your favourite marketing
inspiration tune?
Anything by Kenny G - I love Sax!
And anything instrumental Jazz
just makes me feel good.
2. Why does it get you in the
mood?
the music makes me feel good and
relax when I'm struggling to find
the right words. I can't listen to
music with lyrics when I'm writing
as the words get in the way of my
ability to find the words I need
for the piece I'm writing.
3. How or where do you like to
listen to it?
I usually listen to it on my
computer speakers while I'm
working - rocking it in my chair
while typing :) Or I turn on the
Sirius channel on the TV and play
it in the background.
4. If you hadn't been a world
class marketer and could have been
a rockstar you would have been...?

Songs For The Deaf
Jay Baer
Author / President
Convince and
Convert
1. What's your favourite marketing
inspiration tune?
Queens of the Stone Age, Songs for
the Deaf.
2. Why does it get you in the
mood?
It's a rock and roll motivator!
3. How or where do you like to
listen to it?
When I'm doing real marketing, I'm
usually off the road, at home. I
have a whole-house speaker system
set up via Sonos, and I stream
Songza. I'm a big proponent of
Songza, as it contains tons of
playlists that are curated by real
music buffs. Imagine if Pandora
was taken over by the best DJ you
ever met….that's Songza. I'm
jaybaer on Songza if you want to
follow me, and I have a bunch of
favorited playlists, but my
favorite for marketing magic is
"60 Seconds to Disarm This Bomb"
which includes lots of active rock
artists like The Vines, The Hives,
Arcade Fire, etc.
4. If you hadn't been a world
class marketer and could have been
a rockstar you would have been...?
I never wanted to be a rock star,
but I did want to be in the music
biz. I actually co-founded the
student radio station at
University of Arizona. But, if I
was going to pick a rock star to
emulate it would be Thom Yorke.
Never satisfied, always
experimenting and innovating. Just
like a good marketer.

Shut’em Down
David McIninch
VP Marketing
ADP Canada
1. What's your favourite marketing
inspiration tune?
I have 3 broken into mood
categories (at this point, you’re
sorry you asked, right?):
Chill, Head’s Down Work on
Strategy: “Shut’em Down” (Pete
Rock Remix) – Public Enemy
Hype, Creative Review and Design
Work: “Quiet Little Voices” – We
Were Promised Jetpacks
Deep-thoughts Content Creation:
“Reckoner” - Radiohead
2. Why does it get you in the
mood?
All of them occupy that part of my
mind that likes to talk when it
should be quiet and allows me to
focus with clarity and just create
3. How or where do you like to
listen to it?
Office.
4. If you hadn't been a world
class marketer and could have been
a rockstar you would have been...?
Henry Rollins. No question. He
brought the thunder every show,
took punches and gave punches, but
was a warrior poet and completely
exposed himself for all…

Peace Love and Understanding
Jon Packer
Principal
Idea Workshop
1. What's your favourite marketing
inspiration tune?
(What So Funny 'Bout) Peace Love
and Understanding by Elvis
Costello (though the Brinsley
Schwartz original is pretty good
too).
2. Why does it get you in the
mood?
One part nostalgia, another the
energy and simple, can-do message.
The title says it all.
3. How or where do you like to
listen to it?
Excellent for running which is
when the best ideas happen.
4. If you hadn't been a world
class marketer and could have been
a rockstar you would have been...?
This one is easy. Bobby Womack. An
incredible artist and one of the
most underrated songwriters and
performers. He is the Soul
Survivor.

Try
Tracy Staniland
VP Corporate
Marketing
Asigra
1. What's your favourite marketing
inspiration tune?
Try by Pink and How Do You Like Me
Now by The Heavy
2. Why does it get you in the
mood?
You've got to get up and try.
You've got to get up and try. Its
not about going "viral" but its
the fact that you tried and that
you put something out there. It's
all about the 80/20 rule. Both of
these tunes are inspiring as they
encourage me to try harder to take
that first step - to try something
"new". It's all about taking that
first step to trying something
new, taking a different approach,
launching a new campaign, and
"colouring outside the lines".
3. How or where do you like to
listen to it?
Headphones on my morning walk - it
inspires me to try harder and push
myself harder to strive for
greater achievements - go that
extra few steps or just before I
need to write a blog post or
creative brief or a response to
tough question from a customer.
4. If you hadn't been a world
class marketer and could have been
a rockstar you would have been...?
Sheryl Crow - the all "natural"
rockstar - Sheryl makes it look
easy!

Get Ready
Nick Edouard
EVP of Business
Development and
Marketing
LookBookHQ
1. What's your favourite marketing
inspiration tune?
"Get Ready" by Ella Fitzgerald (cover
of The Temptations original).
Or the Pixies' "Debaser". But that's
rather a different vibe.
2. Why does it get you in the mood?
Well, the title rather says it all!.
And while the lyrics may not be
entirely relevant for a married man
in his late 30s, it's a massively
upbeat tune that never ceases to put
me in a "can do" state of mind. "Get
ready, 'cos here I come."
Also, I think I first heard it on a
mix by DJ Norman Jay (not Fat Boy
Slim, the other Norman Jay of Notting
Hill Festival and Big Chill Festival
fame) and there are few people better
able to soundtrack the summer. So
it's definitely a summer track for me
- and makes me want to be back in
London for the Notting Hill Festival
but that's another story entirely!
3. How or where do you like to listen
to it?
Headphones on, volume turned up, at
my desk, trying not to sing along and
bug my team.
Of course, I'd like to be listening
to it poolside with a beer in my hand
but such is life...
4. If you hadn't been a world class
marketer and could have been a
rockstar you would have been...?
(A very poor man's) Freddie Mercury.
Best. Performer. Ever. Even his
hologram stole the show at the London
Olympics closing ceremony. I would
have loved to have seen Queen live.
And what a voice - he even did an
opera, Barcelona, with Montserrat
Caballé. Legend.
