Bogs are areas of soft marshy ground near wetlands that have been around for almost 10,000 years. They are characterized by thick mats of sphagnum moss encircling or covering small lakes or ponds, and contain plants like cranberry, Labrador tea, and bog laurel. Bogs are found in glaciated regions of the Northeast and Great Lakes, covering ponds or lakes, and exist in several U.S. states including Illinois, Minnesota, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.
