Blackface is a form of theatrical makeup used
in minstrel shows, and later vaudeville, in
 which performers create a stereotyped
 caricature of a black person.
 At the end of the Civil War, a Jewish Confederate soldier
returns to find his once-grand home in ruins, occupied
only by two of his family’s former slaves. Confronted
with a changed, uncertain social order, and bound by
the history and faith they share, the three men must
grapple with their responsibility toward each other and
the secrets they hold. The Whipping Man is a moving
drama about newfound freedom, the legacy of slavery,
    redemption and regret.
The play received its world premiere at the Town Hall
Theatre, Galway where it opened on 1 February 1996. It
then toured Ireland, stopping off in Langford, Kilkenny
and Limerick. It transferred to London’s West End, where it
opened at the Royal Court Theatre on 29 February 1996. It
then returned to Ireland to embark on an extensive
  national tour
When four lost New Englanders who enroll in Marty's
 six-week-long community-center drama class begin
to experiment with harmless games, hearts are
quietly torn apart, and tiny wars of epic proportions
are waged and won. A beautifully crafted diorama,
a petri dish in which we see, with hilarious detail
and clarity, the antic sadness of a motley quintet.
 Top dog/Underdog is about the men who hustle
cards and take money from fools.
