The Minimum Support Price (MSP) is a price set by the Government of India to purchase crops directly from farmers. This is meant to guarantee farmers a minimum profit level if market prices fall below production costs. The Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices recommends MSPs at the start of planting seasons based on factors like production costs, input prices, supply and demand. MSP aims to ensure stable and remunerative prices for farmers as well as adequate and affordable food supplies for people.
