Back to School: How The Major Retailers Fared on Social Media Mark Fidelman
Taking advantage of the immense amount of social chatter about Back-to-School shopping, I worked with MutualMind to understand the who, what and where of these conversations. The social listening campaign was set up to collect any mention of “Back to School” and one of the following six retailers - Walmart, Target, Kohl’s, JC Penney, Kmart and Amazon. After the collection, our analysts took a deeper dive into the dataset to tag content based on whether a mom, dad, student or teacher was the one making the post. They also tagged content by the grade the student was going into.

Game Changing Customer Support CommunitiesMark Fidelman
This document traces the evolution of documentation from early cave paintings and Egyptian scrolls to modern online support sites. It discusses how the needs of documentation have changed over time, from recording early histories and religious texts to distributing scientific discoveries and training people on new technologies. The document notes that today's online support sites face challenges in meeting modern customer needs. Customers often leave sites searching elsewhere for answers or arrive at competitors' sites due to outdated, inaccurate or irrelevant content. The document argues that future support needs adaptive sites that provide personalized, mobile-friendly assistance through search, rich media, user contributions and analytics to improve the customer experience.
What if Peter Drucker Taught Enterprise 2.0 Strategy?Mark Fidelman
Peter Drucker (November 19, 1909 – November 11, 2005) was a writer, management consultant, and self-described “social ecologist.” He is in every practical sense the father of modern management strategy.
As a life long Drucker student, I’ve always imagined how he would have taught or wrote about Enterprise 2.0 and its impact on today’s management and companies. So I decided to turn imagination into reality (well… mine at least) and produced a presentation which I believe would have reflected Drucker’s view of Enterprise 2.0:
Are Content Strategists the Next Corporate Rock Stars?Mark Fidelman
Content Strategy is a lot like managing a Rock Band. You have the rock stars, the promoters, the fans, and the content (songs, image, branding). This presentation will walk you through the perils of bad content, expose you to great content, and answer the question "Are Content Strategists the Next Corporate Rock Stars?"
What Marketing Needs to Know about Content StrategyMark Fidelman
This document discusses the importance of content strategy for marketing. It notes that strategic content can (1) create leads and drive revenue by offering valuable information to customers, (2) engage and educate people by allowing feedback and questions, and (3) be social by rewarding user-generated content and driving social recognition. The best companies increase revenue, engage communities for learning, and make their content social. Content analytics can help understand what is relevant to site visitors through search patterns and customer behavior.
What Every CMO Needs to Know About Content StrategyMark Fidelman
A must read for all CMO's - What is Content Strategy and how do I build content that drives leads and revenue? How do I make it social and why does it matter?
The 10 Step Framework for Social Content
The document discusses how companies can crowdsource content and technical documentation by leveraging their "in-crowd" of employees, customers, partners, and experts. It recommends implementing a collaborative knowledge base (CKB) using MindTouch's open source platform to attract new knowledge and perspectives in a cost-effective way. By engaging the in-crowd through a CKB, companies can foster innovation, produce documentation at a lower cost than internal teams, and build stronger relationships with stakeholders.
Crowdsourcing documentation and knowledge bases can provide benefits like lower costs and higher quality content. However, an unmanaged crowd risks losing focus and reducing accuracy. Implementing a MindTouch Collaborative Knowledge Base allows a company to attract relevant stakeholders like employees, customers, and partners to provide input, while tools like moderation and permissions ensure content adheres to company goals. Initial costs are low and ROI can be seen quickly as the system scales to involve more contributors over time.

Applications evolved in a way to break data into diverse fragments, tightly coupled with applications and expensive to integrate. The result is technical debt, which is re-paid by taking even bigger "loans", resulting in an ever-increasing technical debt. Software engineering and procurement practices work in sync with market forces to maintain this trend. This talk demonstrates how natural this situation is. LF Energy Webinar: Carbon Data Specifications: Mechanisms to Improve Data Acc...DanBrown980551
This LF Energy webinar took place June 20, 2024. It featured:
-Alex Thornton, LF Energy
-Hallie Cramer, Google
-Daniel Roesler, UtilityAPI
-Henry Richardson, WattTime
In response to the urgency and scale required to effectively address climate change, open source solutions offer significant potential for driving innovation and progress. Currently, there is a growing demand for standardization and interoperability in energy data and modeling. Open source standards and specifications within the energy sector can also alleviate challenges associated with data fragmentation, transparency, and accessibility. At the same time, it is crucial to consider privacy and security concerns throughout the development of open source platforms.
This webinar will delve into the motivations behind establishing LF Energy’s Carbon Data Specification Consortium. It will provide an overview of the draft specifications and the ongoing progress made by the respective working groups.
Three primary specifications will be discussed:
-Discovery and client registration, emphasizing transparent processes and secure and private access
-Customer data, centering around customer tariffs, bills, energy usage, and full consumption disclosure
-Power systems data, focusing on grid data, inclusive of transmission and distribution networks, generation, intergrid power flows, and market settlement data
Dandelion Hashtable: beyond billion requests per second on a commodity serverAntonios Katsarakis
This slide deck presents DLHT, a concurrent in-memory hashtable. Despite efforts to optimize hashtables, that go as far as sacrificing core functionality, state-of-the-art designs still incur multiple memory accesses per request and block request processing in three cases. First, most hashtables block while waiting for data to be retrieved from memory. Second, open-addressing designs, which represent the current state-of-the-art, either cannot free index slots on deletes or must block all requests to do so. Third, index resizes block every request until all objects are copied to the new index. Defying folklore wisdom, DLHT forgoes open-addressing and adopts a fully-featured and memory-aware closed-addressing design based on bounded cache-line-chaining. This design offers lock-free index operations and deletes that free slots instantly, (2) completes most requests with a single memory access, (3) utilizes software prefetching to hide memory latencies, and (4) employs a novel non-blocking and parallel resizing. In a commodity server and a memory-resident workload, DLHT surpasses 1.6B requests per second and provides 3.5x (12x) the throughput of the state-of-the-art closed-addressing (open-addressing) resizable hashtable on Gets (Deletes).

The typical problem in product engineering is not bad strategy, so much as “no strategy”. This leads to confusion, lack of motivation, and incoherent action. The next time you look for a strategy and find an empty space, instead of waiting for it to be filled, I will show you how to fill it in yourself. If you’re wrong, it forces a correction. If you’re right, it helps create focus. I’ll share how I’ve approached this in the past, both what works and lessons for what didn’t work so well.

The new intranet paradigm applies the social networking technologies

appropriate for a company’s public site. As ERP systems opened greater access to business data, vendors added
employee self-service (ESS) functionality to provide additional justification for the value proposition of those
multi-million dollar solutions. ESS-enabled intranets provided real costs savings as human resources and other
departments no longer fulfilled employee information requests concerning employment, benefits, travel, and other
policies. Corporate intranets would never be the same.
Companies have diverse cultures, yet two traits seem universal:
Limitations of Intranet 1.0 1.) success breeds success and 2.) avoiding work is good. The
• IT assistance required for all content success of ESS transformed the corporate intranet into the

• No access to live enterprise data Everything could be found online.

Today, most corporate intranets are little more than a huge data
• Non project-based archive, company bulletin board, and secure portal into ESS.
• No metrics generated or monitoring Forward thinking companies grasping for innovation have added
enabled forums, chat rooms, and marketing pizzazz in an attempt to build
• Content is disconnected and community and open channels of communication, but users
unorganized have never engaged at predicted rates, and any claim of added
business value is specious at best.
For IT departments already struggling to pull the company upstream against the swift current of cost reductions,
the corporate intranet became a boat anchor. Content management responsibilities are daunting. The intranet of
a typical Global 2000 corporation will likely have thousands of pages of content, most of which require periodic
updates. The reality is that updates are delayed, often for months. Content becomes stale and inaccurate and users
become less confident in their decisions.
Collaborative Intranets for Enterprise 2.0— Intranets as a Productivity Tool
As it turns out, there was an answer to that previous question, “Why talk to anyone?” It’s called “innovation,” and it
happens when people share ideas. As more ideas are shared faster, the pace of innovation increases. The fastest
and most effective way to exchange ideas is by talking. Unfortunately, corporate intranets in the 1.0 era were
actually stifling innovation by eliminating communication channels. Co-workers became strangers to anyone outside
their own departments.
Companies that use their intranet, instead, as a collaborative network, facilitate
the communication that enables innovation. The concepts of Intranet 2.0 – Adaptive Intranets
secure information sharing, interoperability, and content collaboration – come change as the needs of

information fabric that can be tailored to fit each project team. Federated from

enterprise wikis, blogs, and mash-ups that engage conversations without straying
from business objectives.
Implementing collaborative networks becomes possible as project dashboards, reporting, and content workflows
are easy add-ons. Rather than a monolithic file repository of slightly old data, the corporate intranet becomes
a collaboration platform that fosters innovation. Any team member can edit project data on-the-fly, and share it
immediately for all others to review, discuss, expand, or edit.
The market is responding with Intranet 2.0 solutions, but vendors offer different visions, with most looking to support
legacy product lines. The market leader in collaboration, SharePoint, features a comprehensive solution offering,
but works best as part of a total Microsoft environment. Looking to capitalize on the popularity of consumer social
networking sites, other vendors wrap the same technology in a business-focused marketing message and call
the product “social business software.” While the solutions certainly attract and engage employees, their focus on
building personal networks, rather than on enterprise content collaboration and company objectives, produces no
real business value.
Social networks enable conversations between people. Instead, collaborative networks encourage personal
conversations, and focus on enabling teams to access and organize data within their information fabric into
meaningful information that empowers decision making, enables collaboration, and fosters innovation.
Benefits of Collaborative Networks
• Access to all enterprise content • Superior Office Connectivity
• Real time document editing • Collaboration enabled
• Employee-generated content • Innovation facilitated
• Low-cost data integration • Monitoring enabled and custom metrics produced

A Collaborative Network Solution for Every Company
The value proposition of collaborative networks scale to meet the requirements of any company. From a small-to-
medium sized (SMB) company that webifies its Microsoft Office and Outlook apps for Wiki collaboration to Fortune
100 companies with dozens of data silos, the cost and time to implement collaborative networks are not significant
impediments to success. To date, the struggles of early adopters have resulted from poor vision – typically, the
mistaken assumption that popular social networks could be leveraged for business value.
