Early mime What is mime?-Mime is where you silently express things. You have to be really good to do a show of mime, as there is no talking; you have to show what you mean by body language and exaggerate your move to make things clear. Early man was the first mime but the Greeks were the first to do it as a performance. Borrowed information from: http://www.members.tripod.com/~kiko_mime/history.html
How did mime develop Before languages were spoken mime was used to communicate, when people started to communicate through spoken language mime became a form of entertainment. Mime is a developed form of drama. It all began in The theatre of Dionysus in Athens where the were around 10,000 audience and the people at the back couldn’t hear or see the performers so the performers had to wear a mask, (the upset mask told the audience it was a tragedy and the happy mask told the audience it was a comedy) they also had to exaggerated the movement. Romans copied the idea of mime from the Greeks and it soon developed to pantomime. The Church who made a lot of decisions didn’t like vulgar mimes and closed the theatres. Mimes then started in church - e.g the Christmas story. Mime reached its peak in 16th century in Italy in the form of commedia dell' Arte. It first came out in the market places in 1500`s where street performers began to wear masks with exaggerated comical features. Stories that told you what is right and what is wrong. http://medievaleurope.mrdonn.org/plays.html
Tudor theatre Simple plays were performed in churches others were performed on small stages or wagons called pageants which had to be pulled around. Everyone was either acting or watching it was like a modern carnival. The Tudors love to perform but they didn’t invent acting..The “theatre” comes from the a Greek word for “seeing place”. Some say it comes from the Greek word ‘drama’ which means ‘to do or to act’. The development of theatre during this period helped to shape drama into what it is today.. When the flag was flying everyone knew there was going to be a performance that day. Information from Tudor theatre By Allan Childs
Factors Historical- history is now what helps us create plays, plays about wars or plays that are set in 50s and 60s e.g. Miracle plays is about the miracle in the past. Social- some people who are powerful like the government doesn’t like or want you to criticize them or say stuff hey don’t want to hear, mime is a way to express your feeling and rights with out saying anything. Technological- Back in the days people had to wear a mask to project their voice now people use microphone and also don’t even have to go out to watch a performance they can just go to the internet. Economical-People would pay more to get better seat back then and we still do this now.
