The Arctic tern travels from the Arctic to the Antarctic each year, covering over 40,000 km round trip to breed in the summer months in the Arctic and winter in the Antarctic. Over its lifetime of about 26 years, an individual Arctic tern may travel over 1 million km migrating between its breeding and wintering grounds twice annually.
