Transcarpathia in Ukraine has taken steps to address the problem of homeless animals by establishing shelters. Leaders from several cities and animal protection organizations signed an agreement to work together on staffing and maintaining shelters for stray animals. While overcoming bureaucratic obstacles is challenging, advocates have secured private funds to begin constructing shelters. A memorandum was signed in Uzhgorod to solve the issue across the entire region, with local authorities pledging help to build shelters in each district center. Currently, nearly 1,000 stray dogs are in Uzhgorod with existing shelters in other cities too small or in need of reconstruction to properly care for the animals.

There is a shelter in Mukachevo, but it is too small
and the animal protection activists spotted the
cases of cruel treatment of animals.
The temporary shelter which consists of 25

There is also a shelter for stray animals in Khust
but it is also too small and needs a full
reconstraction.
There is a youth movement in Transcarpathia:
“Take a pet home” and many teens try to find home
for stray dogs and cats.
