Here I would like to share the outcomes of this quest: what architecture solutions are made, how does Marktplaats.nl run and scale so many BFFs in production, how we grew as a team, educated frontend-developers to write backend code and what were our biggest challenges.

This project involves 4 teams distributed over two countries - Germany and India, each of the teams delivering one or several micro frontends that are consolidated into one product in the browser. This talk is based on our practical insights into micro frontends using React and Redux. We will discuss the differences between this technique and micro-services, our approaches to solving the common issues, the advantages it offers and the challenges it brings.

Hybrid Integration using BizTalk and Azure
These days we see more and more companies moving parts of their infrastructure to the cloud, however not all data will be moved to the cloud. In this session, we will deep-dive into the options which Azure provides us to integrate the cloud with our on-prem systems, like BizTalk and Sql. A session full of BizTalk, Logic Apps, Azure Functions, Service Bus and more. Using these systems together provides us a hybrid integration strategy which we can use to build more powerful integrations at a faster pace.

It also compares monoliths to microservices and covers some common pros and cons like increased operations overhead but also more evolutionary design.
Bridging Microservices, APIs and Integration
Kasun Indrasiri discussed the evolution of application architectures from monolithic to microservices and the need for integration between microservices. He described how Netflix, Uber, and PayPal implement service compositions in their microservice architectures. He then introduced the concept of integration or composite microservices that are used to integrate APIs, legacy systems, databases, and other microservices. Ballerina was presented as an open source framework for building these types of integration microservices with features like graphical definitions and network abstractions. Service meshes were also briefly mentioned as tools for managing inter-service communications at scale.

Modern applications are moving away from the traditional request/response loop to more event-driven patterns. The concept of “serverless” computing is floated around when discussing microservices and modern architectural design patterns. But what is serverless, and how - if at all - is it different than microservices?
We’re entering a world where developers won’t have to think about provisioning resources to run their code. While serverless computing sounds like nirvana, there’s an upfront investment in changing development and operational patterns to allow for such a level of automated orchestration. Meanwhile, innovative teams have embraced the use of microservices as a direct response to the costly and cumbersome monolithic methodologies of the past, but new questions have arisen around use cases, planning, and best practices for implementation.
This talk explains why now is the dawn of the serverless age. It also discusses best practices and tools that are available to address the challenges of service-driven architectures head-on while deploying in a serverless environment.
Spring Boot 2.2
Spring Boot 2.2 is currently in the milestone phase with release candidates expected this summer and a general availability release scheduled for the end of September. The release includes updates to support the latest versions of Elasticsearch, improved performance for Spring MVC and WebFlux, and initial support for the RSocket protocol.

Tom Resing of MicroLink LLC presented on creating mapping web parts in SharePoint. He discussed tools for building web part features and solutions like Visual Studio extensions for Windows SharePoint Services. He demonstrated creating a basic web part and inspecting a mapping web part solution. Resing also covered using the Google Maps API for mapping capabilities and alternatives for offline mapping like Google Earth Enterprise.

Modern frontend has grown in complexity and technologies diversity dramatically last decade. Usual case are apps of >100KLOC with multiple teams shipping code daily. One of the ways to deal with support and further growth of such projects is to apply microservices approach to frontend stack.
There are several solutions in the ecosystem that can enable multiple frameworks run seamlessly within one main uber-SPA. This enables common benefits of microservices approach: freedom of technology choice, separate deployments, faster new developers on-boarding due to reduced complexity of each sub-module, etc. Also this might be a migration path for large frontend monoliths.

The WebKit community is interesting: companies & individuals cooperate successfully to evolve a complex codebase. Given the popularity of HTML5 and web technologies, WebKit is one of the most important open source projects. Our WebKit team at Igalia maintains the WebKitGTK+ port and contributes to WebCore, JSC, V8 & other ports (EFL, Clutter, Qt), being the top committers after Google&Apple. In this talk, we will review the past&present&future of the project, will explain how to interact with it, how to create or maintain ports, and other details very useful for those who in one way or another use or depend on WebKit.
