What is MICROAGGRESSIONS?
Dr. Chester Pierce
Psychiatrist
1977 – microaggression was first used and identified . It focuses
on how RACISM (towards African Americans) is portrayed in
various television commercials
2010 –improved upon the original description and produced the
classifications of microaggressions - microassualts, microinsults,
microinvalidations.
Oxford language described MICROAGGRESSION as every day, subtle, intentional or unintentional interactions or
behaviors that communicate some sort of bias toward historically marginalized groups – race, gender, sexual
orientation, religion, heritage, age or health status.
I believe the most
qualified person
should get the job!
You don’t
seem like
you grew up
poor!
You don’t seem like
you are depressed.
Sometimes I get sad
too!
Don’t be so
sensitive or too
emotional!
You don’t have kids
to pick up, so you
can work later,
right?
Are you from the
big 4 (universities)?
Sayang ang ganda
mo pag wala kang
boyfriend!
Maputi lng
pinaupo na?
Who is the ‘man’
in your
relationship?
Culture of VICTIMHOOD
- Domination is the main form of deviance, and VICTIMIZATION
is a way of attracting sympathy, so rather than emphasize either
their strength or inner worth, the aggrieved emphasize their
oppression and social marginalization.
- People are intolerant of insults, even if unintentional, and react
by bringing them to the attention of authorities or to the public
at large or in this present time, SOCIAL MEDIA
- People increasingly demand help from others, and advertise
their oppression as evidence that they deserve respect and
assistance (RELIANCE ON THIRD PARTY)
Separate intent
from impact.
DEFY. Challenge the
perpetrator to clarify
their statement or
action. Use a probing
question, such as
“How do you mean
that?”
DISCERN. Determine
how much of an
investment you want
to make in
addressing the
microaggression.
Make positive
reinterpretations
of negative
thoughts.

Editor's Notes

  • #2 It is any act, no matter how subtle that makes the recipient uncomfortable regardless of the intent. Microinvalidation – dismisses a person’s thoughts, feelings and opinions, don’t be so sensitive.. Microassaults - which are a blatant display of sexism or racism, then saying I was just joking.. Microinsults - subtle jabs that belittle a person’s identity, babae kc or matanda na kc kaya di makasunod
  • #3 Everybody is a racist, sexist, prejudiced micro aggressor even if they don’t realized it and there’s no proof at all. Often, we only notice a microaggression when someone points it out.  Microaggression is a myth created by people who want to play the victim instead trying to be a contributing adult member of society. Microaggression is magnifying small offenses, mind reading by identifying subconscious thoughts even the offenders are unaware of, labelling others as aggressors
  • #4 Types of victims in life: 1. The ones who embrace it for a moment, learn from the experience and move on. 2. The ones who embrace it for a lifetime, refusing to move on and collecting evidence for why their life stinks. People are intolerant of insults, even if unintentional, and react by bringing them to the attention of authorities or to the public at large or in this age, post it on social media. - VICTIMHOOD
  • #5  Some people react with defensiveness or make excuses. It is important to consider what about our words and actions were offensive without attempting justifications or disregarding the other person’s view. And failure to notice and address microaggressions – or outright dismissal of their impact – reinforces those biases and creates a space for them to thrive.
