PINK- RAISE YOUR GLASS
DIRECTOR BY DAVE MYERS
•Intertextuality
•relationship between text
•Narcissism
•hyper reality
•black humour (leaves you asking more questions)
•pastiche (pasting together and commenting on things of the past)
•magic realism (exaggerating)
•different perspective (excusing all values of judgement)
•cultural flattering (weakening and devaluation of cultural
•identities, symbols, icons and traditions)
•hybridisation (swap purity for new combos
•eclecticism (drawing upon multiple theories/ideas to gain complementary insight)
Pink toasts to all the "nitty-gritty, dirty
little freaks" in "Raise Your Glass,"
and she represents many varieties of
underdogs in the song's saucy video.
The singer's personas include Rosie
the Riveter, a sumo wrestler, a
gangster and a high school nerd.
The music video overall promotes gender, racial, social,
sexual orientation, religious, and species equality; with
regards to nonhuman animal rights, it tackles specifically
bullfighting (with P!nk defending a bull from a matador)
and the dairy industry (depicting a calf feeding on human
milk). P!nk dons a balaclava and black clothes in some
scenes, which is a reference to the Animal Liberation Front.
The songs tittle, ‘raise your glass’ is directed towards an ancient Greek ritual where raising glasses
was done to honour a certain individual or the Greek Gods. This is time bending as Pink tries to
bring the past, popular rituals into our modern culture and therefore, is very post modern. In this
mid shot, we see Pink dressed up as the persona of an American war poster propaganda. This
highlights how she is fighting for the underdogs in this society through intertextuality as she is
referring to males and females in our modern society who are looked won upon, rather than the
woman in the 20th centaury. This is also a form of electricsm as Pink is trying to highlight that this is
a minor issue that will get tackled.
The gay marriage scene was a pastiche to when she threw her best friend a gay wedding in her
backyard. The wife's mother cried and asked ‘why this isn’t legal?’ so Pink dedicated this scene to all the
homosexuals. She is trying to convey that everyone, whatever their choice of life, can get married.
Additionally this is cultural flattening as homosexuals are still a new theme in modern society, regardless
how far we have come form the 19th centaury. Homosexuals are yet to be expected in every country by
every individual therefore it is still a problem that Pink feels the need to convey in her music video.
Additionally the fact the scene last for about 2 seconds highlights how she, with the help of others, will
make this only a 2 minute issue in the world.
Pink is seen with a fat man dressed as a posh, politician through a long shot. Both characters are in
an arena that has a large dollar sign in the middle which sympathizes the war between middle and
low class people against the government who are known for taking unnecessary amounts of tax from
those classes. Pink uses the magic realism to emphasis how this issue is present and how we need
to work together to defeat these people. Pink uses narcissism through acting in different personas
throughout her music video, all fighting for the underdogs of our modern society.
In this scene we see pink feeding a calf breastmilk from females who are blindfolded and strapped to a
chair. This is intertextuality and pastiche to the controversial events taking place in the dairy industry.
Pink uses magic realism to highlight clearly how we are stealing milk from innocent mum cows who
could've used that milk to feed their own young. Instead the calf's are taken away from the cows at birth
and are brutally slaughter.
This scene shows a mid shot of pink sleeping with a nun. This is a fight against religious restrictions
forced upon individuals who have no voice to oppose them. Pink uses black humour to let the audience
question this type of behaviour. Additionally pink uses cultural flattening to fight back on the religious
beliefs upheld by religious men leaders.
