What Other Students Had to Say About MIFW… Behind the scene of fashion show production is so much more than just putting a model into an outfit and having him/her strut their stuff down the catwalk. It is intense, invigorating, and at the end of the day behind the scenes is exhausting. Working fashion week showed me that it takes more than beautiful garments and gorgeous models to put on a show.     MIFW inspired and challenged me to look for something more as far as my career aspirations are concerned. In order to experience the most and learn a great deal, you need to be proactive in finding things to do and asking what you can do next.
Talking to the right people and making yourself not only available to do any task, but willing and eager, will provide you with the greatest rewards. All of the designs were so eclectic and really broadened my horizons to new types of fashions that I had never seen or experienced before. Putting my leadership skills to use, effectively working together in a team, and better enhancing my understanding of the fashion industry, have and will continue to benefit me in the near future, as well as in my career. I left Miami Fashion Week with new friends, a great experience and great memories.
What Couldn’t be Learned in the Classroom So much of what we used at MIFW we had learned in the classroom. However, the experience we gained while at the events could never be equally attainable in a classroom setting. While sitting in class, you can only experience and prepare for so much.  There are so many other career outlets related to this industry that class work cannot prepare you for. There was so much hands-on work experience at MIFW!
5 Reasons Why We Would Recommend this to EVERY Retail Student 5. It gets you out of your comfort zone and immerses you in a completely different culture. 4. It is hard to find experiences like this once you leave college!
3. We made so many new friends and made lasting memories. 2. There were so many networking opportunities!
1. Working at MIFW combined learning the industry with hands-on experience. Opportunities to do both can only be obtained by attending and working hard at events such as this!
Thank You for your time and support!

Editor's Notes

  • #3 Simple things that we usually do with our parents…
  • #4 Really nice area, pretty close to south beach which is where we went to dinner, bummed around during the day (versace mansion, shopping)
  • #5 When we first got to Fashion Week, many of us were intimidated, first off because we didn’t know what to expect. There were other schools there already working too. The volunteer coordinator gave us specific jobs, many of the times Stout students took the leadership responsibilities into their own hands and asked what else we could do to help out.
  • #6 READ the list on the slide, it gives a basic outline in order of the progression that took place each night… We were definitely surprised to see how fast everything transpired backstage. We had no idea that it took so much collaboration and preparation to have a model walk on a runway for less than a minute. After working the first day our group was much more comfortable and knew what to expect for each shift there after.
  • #7 One of the jobs that Jodee and I really took the reins on and showed great leadership was Choreography. I worked on it the first day and helped develop the visuals and worked very closely with Big John and backstage during the show! The day JoDee got to work Choreography, she got to gather a lot of information from the designers which was an amazing networking experience for her and she was ablet to help them make decisions about their choreography.
  • #8 DURING THIS TASK, STUDENTS TOOK A LOT OF INITIATIVE. THEY OFTEN WERE NOT PRESENTED WITH THE APPROPRIATE OR THOUROUGH ENOUGH INFO FROM THE DESIGNERS. STUDENTS WOULD CONSULT WITH THE DESIGNERS ON WHAT THEY WANTED AND ACCURATELY REPRESENTED IT ON THE BOARDS. IT ALSO TOOK A LOT OF DECISION MAKING AND LEADERSHIP- WHEN WE HAD QUESTIONS…LIKE WHEN MAKING THEM FOR THE FIRST TIME…WE DIDN’T ALWAYS WANT TO CONSULT JOHN OR ASK HIM A BUNCH OF LITTLE QUESTIONS. WE ALL DELIBERATED ON WHAT WOULD BE THE BEST SOLUTION AND WENT TO JOHN TO CHECK OVER OUR WORK AND TO SEE IF WE WERE ON THE RIGHT TRACK. "While working on the choreography before the show, we were able to demonstrate great leadership and decision making skills. We all worked nicely as a team and communicated well on how we thought the tasks should be executed."
  • #10 -Many of the students worked with the Designers, helping with styling the looks to be shown on the runway -Stout students worked with the choreographer daily to come up with different runway poses, stances and walks for each fashion show that evening.
  • #11 The exciting week came to a close with an exceptional finale filled with color, fashion, music and culture. The evening was hosted by celebrity commentators lleana Garcia and Orlando Léon. Special guest designer Silvia Tcherassi also showed her newest collection and then received the 1st annual Victoria Puig de Lange International Style Award. Awards were given in other various categories some of which being: designers choice award, top model of the year, creative accessories and men’s style award. To close the evening out 500+ guests were entertained with a special live performance by international recording star Marala.
