I developed a range of waterproof roll top daypacks, building on the
initial work of Andy Milne for Sea to Summit.
The brief was for a range of fully featured yet clean daypacks built
around a dry bag chassis.
There are three bags which have different uses and feature whilst
conforming to the same family function and aesthetic. These bags
use my aluminium buckles. I later expanded the range to include
several paddle board deck bags and duffle bags.
The bags incorporate welded and sewn technologies, thermo-
moulding, TPU lamination and soft-goods waterproofing techniques.

I created a family of aluminium buckles for Sea to Summit that could
replace all of the moulded plastic buckles on a pack.
The brief was to improve on the strength and durability of existing
buckles without diminishing performance or adding significant cost.
The range is now used on several packs, bags and gaiters.
Design challenges were creating geometry to allow tight hold and
smooth adjustment at particular angles without excessively wearing
the webbing. This had to be done with a minimum of manufacturing
processes. Design geometry and finishing processes were critical.

Sleeping mats are the largest project ever undertaken by Sea to
Summit. I have been involved in the project since its inception, help-
ing to devise a unique solution to sleeping mat suspension; unique
insulation methods; multifunction valves; testing methodology for
thermal resistivity; and creating promotion material—I created all of
the photography, copy, video production and promotional material
for these sleeping mats and associated accessories.

I collaborated with Sea to Summit’s design team to create several
light and compact hand operated pump solutions for their sleeping
mat range. For the Jetstream I designed the unique one-way fabric
valve for fast, seamless operation. The Jetstream was built to dock
with the three-in-one valve I came up with for inflatable sleeping
mats and pillows
Design challenges were minimising the footprint of existing valves,
creating simple one-way valves that didn’t appreciably hinder air-
flow, keeping part numbers, tooling complexity and cost to a mini-
mum.

Sea to Summit have recently added collapsible silicon kettles and
cooking pots to their product range. Collapsible walled pots have
unique design challenges, such as mounting handles, rigidity for fit-
ting lids and stability when pouring.
I devised several solutions for handles and rigidity, as well as de-
signing a new injection moulding method to suspend materials at a
specific depth inside the silicon.

Hollow Wood Surfboards
I design and build hollow wood surfboards, assembly kits and
courses. The brief was to create surfboards that have a vastly longer
life-span and a much smaller environmental footprint than typical
foam and glass surfboards. The resultant surfboards use 100% recy-
cled timbers and a reduced amount of epoxy and fibreglass.
The original product intent was to produce and sell surfboards,
though the overwhelming market demand has been for
instructional courses and assembly kits.
My surfboard products are marketed under the brand Flowstate

Escapist Tarp System
I designed an ultra-light tarp and accompanying system compo-
nents for Sea to Summit. The range includes two differently sized
tarps, two insect proof mesh inner tents and groundsheet.
The range was designed to continue Sea to Summit’s story with their
Specialist shelter system. Thinking further ahead, I shaped the Es-
capist system to tie the broader Sea to Summit product range into a
coherent family. This family concept groups packs, shelters, sleep-
ing bags and storage gear together.
I had to design a low cost, low bulk solution for the attachment
points, ensuring the ultra-light fabric could distribute the high forces
placed on it. Due to fabric manufacturing difficulties I had to re-
search and educate the company on alternate thermoplastic polyu-
rethane laminating chemistries.

The stand up paddle board market is growing at a rapid rate. I de-
veloped a range of products to cater to this relatively new market
while still appealing to an existing customer base. This range in-
cludes three models of neoprene booties.
The brief was to create a small range of booties which will be equally
suitable for kayaking, surfing and stand up paddle boarding. There
was a tight price-point constraint on this range. The design had to
create as little tooling as possible, reusing lasts and moulds where
feasible. To surmount limitations with the factory’s machines, I had to
devise a new method of joining and rubber-coating Velcro straps.

The Drylite Towel had been a high selling product for Sea to Summit, but
sales started waning in the face of similar products from competitors.
As a product refresh I created a storage pouch and accompanying pack-
aging for the Drylite Towel as well changing the towel to incorporate an
antimicrobial treatment.
Design challenges were researching various antimicrobial treatments and
their environmental and legal implications; devising a pouch and pack-
aging system which would align with the current company brand identity
whilst still fitting with the existing legacy towel range; doing this within a
very tight unit cost increase.

Location Photography
I produce, direct and shoot location stills and video for advertising, corporate and
editorial clients. Much of this work is for full marketing campaigns (adverts, catalogues,
trade shows, packaging). These shoots are both staged and natural. Often they are in
remote, difficult to access areas, though I also do a lot of creative work to get the most
out of nearby locations.
I work as DP and other camera department roles on short and feature length films.
My photography work is marketed under the brand Flowstate Photography:

As with my location photography, my studio work is typically produc-
ing full marketing packages and productions for advertising, cor-
porate and editorial clients. This often includes shooting catalogue
product images and video, portraiture, synthesising location lifestyle
images, interviews and chroma-key work.
I shoot live broadcast multi-cam studio television.
I do photo manipulation and compositing work. This includes image
correction and retouching, catalogue colour matching and colour
changing, and compositing various elements to create the desired
image.

I have created the packaging and marketing material for most of the
products I and others have created at Sea to Summit and several of
Camelbak’s recent display stands and ad campaigns. This encom-
passes the complete packaging design process, and is often intrin-
sically connected to the design of the product itself.
Considerations include visual and tactile presentation, consistency
of a product line whilst adapting styles, fitting solutions, copy writ-
ing, copy editing, photography, die line or tooling creation, materials
specification, graphic design and press-ready output. I put a big
emphasis on cradle-to-grave design.

The innovation of the Travelling Light range is not just the use of technical ultra-light materials, but the
shapes and designs that fit the contours of modern soft sided luggage including carry-on, rolling duffle
bags and backpacks. Packing becomes easier, passing security is faster and everything is easy to find at your
destination.
Packaging
The Travelling Light range is easily identified by its packaging. We redesigned it so that customers could see,
touch and test our products. The best way we can impress our users in-store is to attract them with our new
colours and engage them with our high quality materials and construction. The tactile aspect of a product
can be the most compelling in the retail environment. The packaging range has a fresh, clean, unified look
reflecting the lightweight and functional nature of the products.
The new header is made from polypropylene with partly recycled content. Production and recycling of PP
uses far less energy and water, is less polluting and can be more successfully recycled than paper. As we
strive to reduce the environmental impact of the Travelling Light range we have also halved the material
consumption from the previous packaging.
Colours
There are four new colour schemes for the new range, creating a brighter and more colourful personality
as well as a black and grey option for a more subdued, professional look. The two-tone colour schemes all
use grey trim, complemented by lime, blue, berry, or black. The bright new colours will attract customer
attention and help communicate the lightweight feel. Many fabric panels that were previously black or grey
trim panels have been swapped to colour panels to highlight the vibrant shades.
Please note that while the majority of the colours have switched over, there are still a couple of products
that continue to use black (instead of grey) as the trim colour for construction and aesthetic purposes.
Ultra-Sil
Travelling Light is an ultra-lightweight and stylish solution to luggage organisation. In fact 80% or the
products in the line weigh less than 85 grams. This is achieved by using our premium Ultra-Sil ripstop fabric
as the core material for the designs. The range weighs significantly less than any other similar competing
products. Ultra-Sil is woven from high tenacity Cordura yarn renowned for its resistance to abrasions, tears
and scuffs. The Cordura yarn is made from Nylon which has exceptional strength to weight ratio. Most of
the Ultra-Sil in the Travelling Light range is Sil/PU. The outer surface of Sil/PU is impregnated with silicone for
water shedding, easy packing, and a degree of self-healing punctures. The internal face of Sil/PU has a layer
of polyurethane which greatly increases its water resistance.
It is this remarkable fabric that allows us to design travel products lighter than our competitors without
compromising strength, durability or performance.
New Products
In conjunction with the new look for the range, we are introducing some new products:
Stuff Sack Set
The set comes with a range of three stuff sacks designed as versatile all-purpose bags. Their relatively small
size allows compartmentalisation within your baggage. They are perfect for separating clothes, food or
gadgets, particularly in carry-on luggage and backpacks. Made from Ultra-Sil they are strong, water resistant,
and have a slippery outer finish for sliding into gaps in your bag. They can be anchored to your body,
luggage or ride with the webbing loop.
Padded Soft Cell
Padded soft cells are great for electronics and other delicate items that need a little more protection in your
pack. High density die cut EVA encased in Ultra-Sil fabric provides good cushioning in a robust and light
weight packing cell. They come with durable zips, Hypalon grab tags and a large lid for easy access. This is
effective protection for your gadgets and they weigh only 43g (small) and 63g (large).
