The Brooklyn Navy Yard operated for over 150 years, building and repairing numerous famous naval ships that played important roles in wars. It became a pivotal shipbuilding center during World War II with over 70,000 workers. The Navy Yard was closed in 1966 and today is a commercial and manufacturing site with over 200 businesses and 5,000 employees. Asbestos was widely used in shipbuilding at the Navy Yard, exposing thousands of workers to health risks.
