This document contains summaries of three studies presented at conferences on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
The first study found that supplementing mice with L-carnitine following exposure to pancreatic elastase attenuated the progression of emphysema by reducing apoptosis. The second study showed that the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator potentiator ivacaftor improved mucociliary clearance in human airway tissues and cells exposed to cigarette smoke by reducing mucus viscosity. The third study found that levels of microparticles derived from alveolar epithelial cells were significantly higher in the blood of stable COPD patients compared to non-COPD individuals, indicating epithelial injury in COPD.
