Kalpana Chawla was the first Indian American astronaut and first woman of Indian descent to fly in space. She was born in Karnal, Haryana and studied aerospace engineering in India and the United States, earning multiple advanced degrees. Chawla joined NASA in 1995 and went on two space missions, in 1997 and 2003. Tragically, the 2003 mission ended when the Space Shuttle Columbia disintegrated upon reentry, killing all seven crew members including Chawla. She received several posthumous awards for her contributions and sacrifice.
