tions and to get a sense of the
place,” he explains.
“The reason I set it in the States
is because it’s a high concept
idea and New York is a place
where you can re-invent yourself.
Women have a great perception
and it helps if you have that in the
way that Willy Russell had with
Shirley Valentine, a fantastic
insight into the way that women
think.
“I also like stories that have a
twist, like The Sixth Sense.
“You think you are watching
one thing and then it’s like ‘My
God... you’re watching some-
thing else’. I don’t think readers
will see the end coming.
“But I came up with that a year
ago.”
In his wildest dreams, Steve
naturally hopes his book could
become a major Hollywood
movie.
After all, he’s already had a
brush with superstardom.
Back in 1981, Steve went out
for dinner in Birmingham with a
group of youngsters touring with
the Cambridge Footlights.
Little did he know that they
would become Stephen Fry,
Hugh Laurie, John Sessions and
Emma Thompson. He kept in
touch with Emma for a while –
and hopes she remembers him.
“That would be a dream come
true,” says Steve.
“It’s set in the world of televi-
sion because of the theory that
you should draw on what you
know.
“I’d describe it as a romantic
comedy and a mystery, a genre
that’s ripe for a return.
“There might be some names
from the past I could call (as
regardsamovie),butIdon’twant
to pre-empt them.
“If it was a film, I don’t think it
could be a low-budget thing.”
Meanwhile, Steve is also a
memberofaHarbornebookclub
which has two men and ten
women–it’scalledTenLitChicks
and a Couple of Cocks – but he
hasn’t developed his novel
through them.
“I’m not ready for that,” he
laughs. “There were some days I
was working at 4am on it and I
thought: ‘What am I doing?’.”
