Mercury contamination from a chemical factory caused Minamata Disease, a neurological syndrome. The Chisso Corporation factory released methylmercury into Minamata Bay from 1932 to 1968, which bioaccumulated up the food chain and poisoned local residents who ate contaminated fish. This pollution led to severe health issues in the population and highlighted the dangers of industrial pollution and heavy metal toxicity.
