The Goal
FOR MELWOOD
Jobs for People with Differing Abilities
Melwood was founded in 1963 when a small group of parents and community supporters decided to teach plant care to young
adults who were considered by most to be untrainable and unemployable.
History
On seven acres of unimproved
land – donated by Andrew’s Air Force
Base – our founders pitched an Army
surplus tent and began to lay the
infrastructure for a place where people
with differing abilities could gain job
skills and earn self-generated income.
Over the following decades, Melwood
would pioneer many new milestones
in the field that would be known as
social-entrepreneurial ventures:
businesses with the ‘double bottom
line’ of providing revenue as well as
jobs and independence for people with
differing abilities.
The first successes came in
horticulture. Our trainees cultivated
plants and sold them at work sites
around the Washington, D.C. area.
That work led to grounds keeping and
landscaping contracts, where Melwood
crews consistently delivered good,
dependable work.
Today
We continue to utilize the innovative
social-entrepreneurial model we
were founded on to offer job training,
employment, life skill improvement,
community support and recreation
opportunities. Melwood is now one of
the largest employers of people with
differing abilities in the eastern region
of the United States.

Recycling Responsibly
Melwood launched its Electronics
Recycling business line in 2014. As
a proud member of the eWorks ESI
national network team, Melwood’s
Electronics Recycling Solutions Program
responsibly recycles electronic assets
in compliance with federal, state and
local regulations under national R2
solution standards.
Melwood secured the Responsible
Recycling R2: 2013, ISO 14001 and
OSHAS 18001, the leading certifications
in the electronics recycling industry, after
meeting a set of strict guidelines for
responsible recycling. We are committed
to providing our clients secure data and
electronic equipment management
services conducted under some of
highest environmental management and
security standards available.
e-Recycling Certificates
Melwood provides a certificate
of recycling and a certificate of
destruction for all assets processed.
This verifies that services were
performed in accordance with client
services levels and local compliance
standards and laws.
Advanced Tracking &
Auditing
The most important component of an
electronics recycling solution is the audit
and tracking of material. Our system was
designed to manage client assets from
the point they are received to the point
of final processing under R2 certification
standards. It provides clients with online
scheduling of pickups, remote access to
reporting, and integration to corporate
asset management systems.
Secure Destruction
Melwood offers NIST 800-88
compliant systems for data erasure
and destruction including: secure
destruction, media sanitization using
Blanco Kill disk, data purging
through degaussing or secure erase,

SERVICES
Day Services
Day Services is a goal-orientated
program based on an experiential
learning model that continually
reassesses each individual and
his/her preferences. Programs focus
on following the best practices in
quality day habilitation and offer
participants opportunities to engage
in activities that include creative arts,
culinary arts, fitness, horticulture
therapy, life skills development, and
employment readiness.
Crossroads
Melwood’s largest day program is
based at our Upper Marlboro campus.
We created the program to provide
quality day habilitation support to the
people with differing abilities that we
serve by implementing 6 hours of
meaningful activities that incorporate
decision making skills and personal
growth into their daily activities.
Personal Enrichment
Program (PEP)
Melwood’s day habilitation service
program is designed for program
participants whose primary focus
is activity-based learning. Our main
objective is to provide opportunities
for people with differing abilities to
have a good quality of life. The primary
components of PEP are community
integration, volunteering, life skills
development, and support for
activities of daily living.
Professional Development
and Guidance
Workforce Development and
Guidance is a service program that
provides employment advocacy and
individualized support. Our goal is to
empower participants to focus on
their positive strengths and abilities
that will allow them to become
gainfully employed.
Professional Development Training
Over a twelve-week period, our
Professional Development Program
equips individuals with the tools
they may need to enter/re-enter the
workforce. Participants will learn how
to develop their resume, conduct a
proper job search, master the art of
job interviewing and gain knowledge
on how to professionally conduct
themselves within the workplace.
Pathways
Pathways is designed to assist
individuals transitioning from high
school onto the adult life path of
their choosing. It is a three-year
program that offers a variety of
career, education, and life exploratory
options to aid in the decision of which
path to take in their lives.

Community Based
SERVICES
Community Support Services
Community Support Services was
developed to provide home and
community-based supports and services
to individuals with differing abilities and
their families. We strive to empower
individuals to gain life skills and
independence through individualized
programming.
Community Connections
Community Connections is a service
program providing quality day
habilitation in an integrated community
setting for individuals who want
alternatives to facility-based supports.
Our objective is to provide opportunities
for people with differing abilities to
enjoy meaningful community activities.
Community Employment
Programs
The Community Employment program
was developed based on the philosophy
that every person with a differing ability
is capable of working competitively in
the community when a suitable position
and work environment is available to
him/her. Rather than trying to sculpt
individuals into “perfect workers”
through extensive prevocational
assessments and training, individuals in
the program are offered the supports
necessary to find and retain jobs that
capitalize on their personal strengths
and motivation.
Work Experience Group
The Work Experience Group at
Melwood is a program designed to
provide employment opportunities
within the community for individuals
with differing abilities. Our focus is to
assist program participants in obtaining
the experience needed to achieve full
time or seasonal employment. People
in this program volunteer at various
organizations in the greater DC area
in the following business areas: food
service, custodial, business services,
animal care, and warehousing areas.
Job Finding/Job Development
(DORS1
& DDA2
)
Case managers and/or Job
Development Coordinators provide
one-to-one support to the individual in
the process of finding a job. We center
the job exploration process around
the participants' interests, skills, and
preferences and develop their skills as
job seekers through career exploration,
resume writing, interviewing
preparations and travel training.
Job Coaching
(DORS & DDA)
Customized support on the job is a vital
component in the process of achieving
permanent competitive employment.
We work with program participants
on the job site to help them learn job
skills, providing guidance and support
to employers, and advocating for
necessary adjustments to the work
environment.

Operation: Tohidu®
Retreats
Operation: Tohidu®
is a series of
7-day retreats designed to address
the specific needs of veterans and
active duty service members who
have been formally diagnosed or are
self-reporting with post-traumatic
stress disorder, traumatic brain injury,
anxiety, depression, or substance
abuse disorders resulting from
deployment-related trauma. Each retreat
incorporates education, experiential
learnings, spiritual experiences,
adaptive coping training and alternative
interventions to facilitate a change in
perspective. Through this innovative
program, injured service members
gain the physical skills, confidence
and coping strategies they need for
successful reintegration into their
families and communities.
Camp Accomplish
Since 1998, Camp Accomplish has
provided quality inclusive camping
experiences for campers of all ability
levels in day and residential camp
settings. Campers between the ages
of 5 - 18 receive individualized support
from trained counselors and program
staff with a focus on ensuring each
camper feels valued and successful in
a challenging and safe environment.
For campers seeking a more specific
activity focus, there are programming
options that can be added on to the
Camp Accomplish experience.
Access Adventures
For over 40 years, Access Adventures
has provided planned vacations for
adults with differing abilities. The
program places a focus on small
group, customized vacations to offer
memorable experiences to people
with differing abilities. Designed for
individuals with differing abilities who
are 18 years old or older, Access
Adventures supports individuals in
a 1:4 Travel Host (staff) to Traveler
(participant) ratio. Accommodations
are provided for individuals needing
additional assistance.
The Equestrian Program
A program designed for riders of all
ages and ability levels, including riders
with special needs. Riders are provided
with a mix of basic equitation and
horsemanship skills. When not riding,
an emphasis is placed on strengthening
the riders’ understanding of how to care
for horses and the importance of safety
when working around horses. All riding
lessons are paced to the individual
rider’s needs and comfort level.

AT MELWOOD
First, your contribution to Melwood
will be carefully stewarded to ensure
that your support, regardless of the
amount, is leveraged to provide
maximum benefits to individuals with
differing abilities, providing them with
meaningful services and helping them
to become real wage-earners and a
productive part of our community.
When people with differing abilities
can enjoy a meaningful day and
support themselves, it benefits us all.
It’s an investment in our community
and our future.
Second, your gift to Melwood is
tax deductible under IRS Rules and
may provide significant benefit to
your estate plan. Whether it’s an
outright gift of cash; a monthly EFT
transaction; sponsoring a Melwood
event; a gift of property or life
insurance; a bequest in your will; or
a planned gift through an annuity
or a trust, when you make a gift to
Melwood, you may be reducing your
annual tax liability or reducing the
taxes on your estate.
Third, making a gift to Melwood
makes you part of the Melwood
community… individuals, corporations
and charitable institutions making
a real difference for people with
differing abilities, including our
wounded veterans. There is a silent
and growing new group of adults
with differing abilities who need
and have earned our support… our
nation’s combat veterans with PSTD,
Traumatic Brain Injury and other
invisible wounds of war. We hope
you’ll join us in helping them regain
their lives as family bread-winners
and productive members of our
community.
Opportunities for Support
Community support makes it
possible for Melwood to offer
customized opportunities for people
with differing abilities. We offer
several options to support our
mission and programs.
Melwood Donor Programs
Comprehensive Financial and
Vehicle Donation Programs
Reclaiming the lives of adults and
children with differing abilities
requires a consistent long term
financial commitment. That’s why it’s
so important that each and every day
we generate the funds necessary to
keep hope alive… hope for a real job
with real pay, hope for inclusion. It is
the daily gifts of cash, checks,
EFT transfers… even property
that can be converted to cash like
securities, land, cars, etc.… that
helps us to find meaningful jobs
for so many differently abled adults.
Your gifts help us to identify skills,
train and supervise nearly 800 adults
with differing abilities in over 43
public worksites in the Washington,
D.C. Metro area and nearly 100 in
community employment throughout
Marlyand and Washington, D.C.

Three great reasons to donate to Melwood
Explore our Capabilities 18
We can’t do it without you!
Financial Donations
Cash Donations: Financial gifts
allow for the most flexibility and are
the quickest, easiest way for you to
make a difference. Melwood provides
a number of ways to make your
financial donations. You can set up a
one-time donation or you can make
arrangements to give to Melwood
monthly. We also accept cash
donations by mail or by phone.
So, contact us today to begin the
simple and easy process.
Planned Gifts: Using a planned gift to
Melwood may increase the size of your
distributable estate. You don’t have to
be wealthy to use the same financial
tools the wealthy use to increase the
size of their estates and the gifts they
leave to their loved ones. The wealthy
give to charity because it benefits not
only the cause they care about, but it
also reduces their tax burden and can
increase benefits to their own families
and loved ones.
Honor and Memorial Gifts:
Remembering those who have
touched our lives. Many of us have
been blessed to know an adult or
child with differing abilities. An
Honor or Memorial Gift is a perfect
way to demonstrate your caring.
Few lives have not been touched by
someone who, by birth, by accident,
or by war, struggles/struggled with
differing abilities, yet managed to make
a lasting impression and a real
contribution to our lives. Making a
gift to Melwood in their memory or
in their honor will keep their positive
impact alive and improve the lives
of others who face the same
challenges every single day.
Vehicle Donation
For over 12 years, Melwood has
operated one of the most successful
vehicle donation programs on the
East Coast, processing over 200,000
vehicle donations. When you donate
your vehicle to Melwood, expect
a quick and hassle-free process.
Each donor knows that their vehicle
donation helped to empower people
with differing abilities to transform
their own lives.
Management Services Program:
Melwood’s Charity Car Donation
Management Services offer best-in-
class call center and reporting services
to charities across the country. Our
primary goal is to assist any not-for-
profit agency, regardless of size, in
building an efficient system to accept
car donations from any state. What
makes our program so unique?
There are many car donation
programs, most offered by commercial
companies. Typically, these programs
charge in excess of 30% of the
net earnings. Our management fee
structure allows charities to receive a
greater return on all sold vehicles.
Today, we offer management
services to a number of charities
including Susan G. Komen for
the Cure and its 85 affiliates, 128
programs under the Meals on Wheels
Association of America umbrella, more
than 225 national chapters of The Arc
of the United States, United Cerebral
Palsy and its over 100 affiliates and
National American Business Clubs
(AMBUCS) with over 130 chapters.
We continue to expand this service in
support of the people served by those
charities and by Melwood.

  • 3. A B O U T U S The Goal FOR MELWOOD Jobs for People with Differing Abilities Melwood was founded in 1963 when a small group of parents and community supporters decided to teach plant care to young adults who were considered by most to be untrainable and unemployable. History On seven acres of unimproved land – donated by Andrew’s Air Force Base – our founders pitched an Army surplus tent and began to lay the infrastructure for a place where people with differing abilities could gain job skills and earn self-generated income. Over the following decades, Melwood would pioneer many new milestones in the field that would be known as social-entrepreneurial ventures: businesses with the ‘double bottom line’ of providing revenue as well as jobs and independence for people with differing abilities. The first successes came in horticulture. Our trainees cultivated plants and sold them at work sites around the Washington, D.C. area. That work led to grounds keeping and landscaping contracts, where Melwood crews consistently delivered good, dependable work. Today We continue to utilize the innovative social-entrepreneurial model we were founded on to offer job training, employment, life skill improvement, community support and recreation opportunities. Melwood is now one of the largest employers of people with differing abilities in the eastern region of the United States.

  • 21. Fundrasing AT MELWOOD First, your contribution to Melwood will be carefully stewarded to ensure that your support, regardless of the amount, is leveraged to provide maximum benefits to individuals with differing abilities, providing them with meaningful services and helping them to become real wage-earners and a productive part of our community. When people with differing abilities can enjoy a meaningful day and support themselves, it benefits us all. It’s an investment in our community and our future. Second, your gift to Melwood is tax deductible under IRS Rules and may provide significant benefit to your estate plan. Whether it’s an outright gift of cash; a monthly EFT transaction; sponsoring a Melwood event; a gift of property or life insurance; a bequest in your will; or a planned gift through an annuity or a trust, when you make a gift to Melwood, you may be reducing your annual tax liability or reducing the taxes on your estate. Third, making a gift to Melwood makes you part of the Melwood community… individuals, corporations and charitable institutions making a real difference for people with differing abilities, including our wounded veterans. There is a silent and growing new group of adults with differing abilities who need and have earned our support… our nation’s combat veterans with PSTD, Traumatic Brain Injury and other invisible wounds of war. We hope you’ll join us in helping them regain their lives as family bread-winners and productive members of our community. Opportunities for Support Community support makes it possible for Melwood to offer customized opportunities for people with differing abilities. We offer several options to support our mission and programs. Melwood Donor Programs Comprehensive Financial and Vehicle Donation Programs Reclaiming the lives of adults and children with differing abilities requires a consistent long term financial commitment. That’s why it’s so important that each and every day we generate the funds necessary to keep hope alive… hope for a real job with real pay, hope for inclusion. It is the daily gifts of cash, checks, EFT transfers… even property that can be converted to cash like securities, land, cars, etc.… that helps us to find meaningful jobs for so many differently abled adults. Your gifts help us to identify skills, train and supervise nearly 800 adults with differing abilities in over 43 public worksites in the Washington, D.C. Metro area and nearly 100 in community employment throughout Marlyand and Washington, D.C. 2. 1. 3. Three great reasons to donate to Melwood Explore our Capabilities 18 We can’t do it without you!
  • 22. Financial Donations Cash Donations: Financial gifts allow for the most flexibility and are the quickest, easiest way for you to make a difference. Melwood provides a number of ways to make your financial donations. You can set up a one-time donation or you can make arrangements to give to Melwood monthly. We also accept cash donations by mail or by phone. So, contact us today to begin the simple and easy process. Planned Gifts: Using a planned gift to Melwood may increase the size of your distributable estate. You don’t have to be wealthy to use the same financial tools the wealthy use to increase the size of their estates and the gifts they leave to their loved ones. The wealthy give to charity because it benefits not only the cause they care about, but it also reduces their tax burden and can increase benefits to their own families and loved ones. Honor and Memorial Gifts: Remembering those who have touched our lives. Many of us have been blessed to know an adult or child with differing abilities. An Honor or Memorial Gift is a perfect way to demonstrate your caring. Few lives have not been touched by someone who, by birth, by accident, or by war, struggles/struggled with differing abilities, yet managed to make a lasting impression and a real contribution to our lives. Making a gift to Melwood in their memory or in their honor will keep their positive impact alive and improve the lives of others who face the same challenges every single day. Vehicle Donation For over 12 years, Melwood has operated one of the most successful vehicle donation programs on the East Coast, processing over 200,000 vehicle donations. When you donate your vehicle to Melwood, expect a quick and hassle-free process. Each donor knows that their vehicle donation helped to empower people with differing abilities to transform their own lives. Management Services Program: Melwood’s Charity Car Donation Management Services offer best-in- class call center and reporting services to charities across the country. Our primary goal is to assist any not-for- profit agency, regardless of size, in building an efficient system to accept car donations from any state. What makes our program so unique? There are many car donation programs, most offered by commercial companies. Typically, these programs charge in excess of 30% of the net earnings. Our management fee structure allows charities to receive a greater return on all sold vehicles. Today, we offer management services to a number of charities including Susan G. Komen for the Cure and its 85 affiliates, 128 programs under the Meals on Wheels Association of America umbrella, more than 225 national chapters of The Arc of the United States, United Cerebral Palsy and its over 100 affiliates and National American Business Clubs (AMBUCS) with over 130 chapters. We continue to expand this service in support of the people served by those charities and by Melwood.
