Meiosis involves two rounds of cell division that result in four haploid cells from the original diploid cell. During the first meiotic division, homologous chromosomes pair up and separate, resulting in two diploid cells. The second meiotic division then separates the sister chromatids, resulting in four haploid cells each with half the number of chromosomes of the original cell.
