The Quarterly Labour Force Survey from South Africa found that between the first and second quarters of 2020:
1) Employment decreased by 2.2 million people to 14.1 million employed, the largest quarterly decline since 2008, while unemployment declined by 2.8 million people to 4.3 million unemployed.
2) The unemployment rate decreased substantially from 30.1% to 23.3%, the lowest since 2009, largely due to the national lockdown preventing many from seeking work.
3) Nearly all of the 5.2 million additional people not economically active cited the national lockdown as preventing them from seeking work.
