Draka's HD digital video cables have been installed at dock10 studios in MediaCityUK, one of the largest television production facilities in Europe. The cables connect the seven HD studios, two audio studios, and post-production facilities. Argosy supplied hundreds of kilometers of Draka's Image coaxial cables in various colors for cable runs throughout dock10. Dock10 and other studios at MediaCityUK use Draka cables supplied by Argosy for their video and networking needs.

Draka’s HD digital video cables are picture perfect for dock10 studios at
MediaCityUK
Draka’s HD video cabling has been used to connect studios, production facilities and
content management services at Manchester’s MediaCityUK.
Draka’s HD video cabling has been installed at one of the largest and most technically
advanced television production facilities in Europe. Located in Manchester’s MediaCityUK,
dock 10 has seven high definition television studios, two audio studios, post production
facilities and content management services. The development is the hub of the new media
community in the North of England which has been developed by Peel Holdings.
dock 10’s seven TV studios comprise four full production studios and three presentation
studios. The studios vary in size with the largest having an area of 1,160 m2
, making it one
of the biggest in Western Europe. Major broadcasters, including the BBC, ITV, Channel 4
and Sky, use the state-of-the-art facilities to produce programmes such as The Voice,
Dragon’s Den, Match of the Day and The Sarah Millican Television Programme.

The building also includes two audio studios, the larger of which is dedicated to the BBC
Philharmonic Orchestra. This is mounted on hydraulic jacks to ensure no noise can
penetrate from the adjoining studios. The smaller audio studio is a multi-purpose facility
which is suitable for both radio drama and music. The scheme also includes a central
technical area and master control room along with ingest and edit suites, audio dubbing
suites and grading. Each studio has its own technical gallery and separate facilities for
vision/production and audio. All the studios, edit suites and audio suites are networked to
allow studios and galleries to be reassigned.
TSL was the technical design consultant and systems integrator for dock 10. Its design
aimed to future-proof the facility by using 3Gigabit-SDI video paths throughout. This
enables both 1080p50 High Definition Video and 3D operations.
The studios, production facilities and content management services are all connected
using Argosy’s Image range of HD digital video coaxial cables. The cables are
manufactured by Draka exclusively for Argosy Cables, who supplied TSL. The cables are
manufactured by Draka to provide a superior performance for high frequency digital
applications as well as for lower frequencies used in analogue applications.
Two models of Draka manufactured Argosy Image coaxial cables have been used at dock
10. Image 1000 HD Digital Video Low Smoke Zero Halogen (LSOH) Cable has been used
for longer inter-area cable runs, such as from a studio to an editing suite. For shorter cable
runs and in-rack wiring Image 360 HD Digital Video LSOH Cable has been used. The
360’s smaller diameter has the added benefit of saving weight and space when compared
to traditional analogue video cables.
Argosy has supplied hundreds of kilometres of Image coaxial cable for the dock 10 project.
The cables have been supplied and installed in various colours including green, cream,
grey, violet and turquoise to make it easier to identify different applications.
Fit out of dock 10 was completed in 2011, in time for the BBC to relocate many of its
services to Manchester. However, the strong relationship that has developed between
Argosy and dock 10 has ensured that, post completion, Argosy continue to supply the
dock 10 studios with Draka manufactured Image cables for day-to-day use, along with a

range of other materials from its MediaCityUK office and warehouse facilities located in the
Pie Factory building.
dock 10 is one of several studios located on the 15ha MediaCityUK site to use Argosy-
branded, Draka manufactured, Image coaxial cable. The BBC, ITV and Satellite
Information Services and the University of Salford’s studios all use Image cable as do
Timeline TV and Sumners Post Production’s facilities. “Every single studio building at
Media City uses Draka Image cable supplied by Argosy, we’ve supplied thousands and
thousands of kilometres,” says Ian Davies, head of Argosy’s MediaCityUK office.
